How to get my app done right...
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

I have a great idea for an app. It's fairly simple, but I will still need to hire out the project to get the app created as I am not too up to speed on how to create apps. I need advice from you Warriors out there...

I was thinking of uploading the finished product to Google Play and charging about $1.99 per download (or maybe $4.99 if people are willing to pay that).

My question is this...
If I hire someone on Odesk to create my app for $50, how can I keep my idea from being stolen? So far, it appears my idea has not been taken. I have searched for an app that can do what I want and can't find one.

My other question is...
Is it a simple process to just have someone make me an app, send it to me and then upload it to Google Play to offer it up for downloads at a price? And would you recommend other platforms besides Google Play for selling the app?

Surprisingly, I actually have found someone to do it for $50, and they have made some pretty good apps so I will probably try them out. I have noticed that Apple seems to be where the money is, so I will probably try that out, but how do you get an app onto Apple's platform? Thanks for the advice.

Apple and Google Play you will need a Developer's account! Apple will cost you a lot more and most of the time you will not get any kind of sales.

Most success usually come from free apps with ads inside, users are use to this and they don't mind seeing an ad pop up every now and then. When you start charging you might not get the amount of downloads that you think you should be receiving, even if your app is unique and great.

I'll actually try Google Play first and if the app is a success on Androids then I would move to Apple.

You make the real money on iTunes.

I don't know what you intend your app to accomplish, but in general the better features or functionalities it provides, the more complex it becomes, and the more time it will take. If you found someone that would do this for $50 there is definitely no harm in trying. Your biggest risk then is losing $50, which really is nothing at all compared to potential gains. Question, though; have you tested the apps they have previously created? What are their reviews? Software always encounter bugs, so you want to make sure they are quick at fixing those bugs and make the app better.

Whether you offer a free app with in-app purchases, ad revenue, or they pay for an app, your main challenge is to market the app. Everyone can create an app, or have it created for them, but only a few make it big and those, like with any other product or service, are the ones that are great at marketing themselves.

One last things to consider: While there are app engines out there that let's a non-programmer develop their own apps, these are usually restricted within a framework and customization beyond that can be difficult. I have yet to see a really good app emerge from any of these app engines. You might want to check that they are not using an app engine or template app, unless of course it still is able to serve the purpose you are trying to accomplish.

I agree with most answers here, $50 sounds WAAAAY to little for even the easiest of app projects. You could go the route of using app creators yourself, few problems arise there, learning the process, time and also finding the creator that will let you fully control and add full function to your app.

Do shop around, there are companies or teams that will do your app for $10k or as little as $1k it all comes down to the skill of the developer and the kind of work any given developer or company carry out.

Without knowing what app you want I couldn't give you a general figure on what you should be paying, also I would go IOS, that is where the money hangs around.

With development of apps/games you will get what you pay for in the long run. You might think its a great deal for a great looking app at $500 but you will be disappointed when that shiny looking app is just a good looking app with crappy/buggy function.

If you dont mind losing $50 try it out, just be careful, there are some very underground developers who will work cheap but make money on your hard work of getting installs by adding in backdoors, malware etc on android devices.

If you have any questions feel free to PM me, I dont bite or charge to give you information if your new to apps.

Cheers

Cheers

Great advise about the Malware and back doors.

I would strongly suggest posting an Ad here on WF for an App Developer. There are a lot of friendly, talented people on this forum that would be happy to help.

You can make the App yourselves, take a look at Seattle Cloud and decide if the App can be made via that Platform.

For one time fee, you can create unlimited apps with unlimited push notification features.

Joel

But honestly even if you have $1b app idea chances that someone stole your idea are very low. Instead you should talk about it, at least to some people close to you so they can give you feedbacks and see if your idea is that great.

If you are trying to sell and app, I mean have people buying up-front to use your app and not in-app purchases you should focus first on iPhones because that's where people buy, android have more users, but Apple users are more likely to spend money.

You probably won't find somebody to do the work for $50, I mean depending on how complex your App is it could take a lot of hours to get it done and you won't find an app dev for less than $15/h so at this rate they have to be done in less than 4hours...
Exactly, and to elaborate on the last part: You might find someone that says they'll do it for $50, but they are not going to a do a good job. Unless they are just making apps for the fun of it. If you are looking for a solid professional, $50 won't get you anywhere. No matter where the freelancer is based out of.

If you think your idea will work, register your app as a startup company. Then find an app developer from your local area and work together.
