Long Number Vs Short Code

Want to start an SMS service for businesses, and have found Twilio to be quite a cheap service for the UK.

However I noticed that they give you a long number instead of a short code.

Have any of you found this to be a problem with your customers?
How do you explain using a long number to the businesses?

I personally use long code. The BIGGEST reason, is I can BUY one. I can be done with Short codes, but not so easy and or cheap.

Can someone confirm this, from my understanding longcode while cheaper takes much longer to deliver messages. So on a local basis it may not make a huge difference, but for larger campaigns long codes would not be sufficient.
