Marketing apps can go anywhere from Paid Marketing to App Store Optimization. Do you have a big budget? If so I would suggest to advertise on some networks (also incentive installs). Other than that you can simply optimize your app (title, keywords, description etc) to get a better ranking on the store and drive organic installs.
And try to spread the word about your app on social media...

Incentive installs like having the app free with limited functionality? Is that what you mean? What if I only have a small budget what can I do to market my app?

Incentive in terms of driving paid installs, but those are alot cheaper. However the Retention rate is also lower than "standard" installs.
First thing would be to do some App Store Optimization. After that I would advise you to submit your app to some app review sites.

What kind of apps are you trying to market? Different types of apps require varying marketing strategies. App Store Optimization is the first thing to try and get organic installs. Also, are you marketing ios or Android apps?

I was thinking of an RSS feed type of app like Feed.ly aside from that there's one in the making that's pretty much like Flappy Bird, games along those lines.

That's probably the best way isn't it? I mean on Facebook you'll actually see inserts on your timeline about apps to promote them. Can you show me an app add for pinterest?

You can also try Cross-Promotion - contact other app owners to show your app related ads on their Apps, and vice versa

Are those requests paid? Like is there a trade-off (I guess there will be), Show my app and I'll show yours on mine as well?

Requests are not paid. The trade-off is that you would be displaying their ads on your app. Mostly what other developers are looking for is someone with # of App downloads similar to or higher than theirs.

Or an app whose audience is similar to what they are targeting.

Depending on whether you want paid for free marketing strategies, below is a list of effective tools for driving downloads.

- Facebook Mobile Ads
- Ad Networks
- ASO (App Store Optimization)
- Expanded distribution to more app stores (see CodeNgo for more details)
- Cross Promotion with other developers/publishers (see Xplode from Iddiction for more details on this if you don't know devs you can exchange with)
- Localize your apps. Stores are starving for localized content. Give yourself a better chance to be discovered by localizing at least your app descriptions for key non-English markets
- Get your app reviewed by review sites that target your end users

Hope this gets your started!

Not trying to plug here. We offer apps rank boosting service if you like via genuine incentivised members

With “Pay-To-Download” service, you can have your app downloaded by members from all over the world, each with a unique device. Also on offer - drip rate control to ensure that your apps ranking remains organic

Lots of similar services are using Bots or software which emulate mobile devices; know that Google will close down your account without hesitating if it sees that your app is being negotiated with by bots!

Incentivized installs with Drip control (or number of app installations) - control the number of downloads / day, how slow or fast they come. While we recommend - slow but slow and steady wins the race ( (read - rank!) as well.

It could be install+rating+comment or install only. Hit me with a PM if you wish to know more

Have fun

Getting found in the sea of hundreds of thousands of apps on Android/ iOS store is pretty daunting.

Besides regular SEO, make it a point to use mobile ads/ Facebook ads and take friends' help.

I think joining an ad network is by far the best way to drive installs, but I won't pretend to be unbiased since I work for AppFlood :-)

We have compiled a list of resources about app promotion. They aren't all ad network related. I suggest you start with the first one "4 mobile app marketing tips for a $0 budget" which covers some things like how to put together a media kit about your app.

1) For games: Social Media Integration into your app. Mak eusre users can share their scores, compare their scores to their friends, etc.
2) Localized listings. Make sure you translate the app into as many languages as you can. I get lazy with this and use translate.google.com but it works no problem
3) Make sure your english descriptions are "SEO" Optimized
4) Pop up an alert after the user opens the app a few times to remind them to rate it 5/5 this helps immensily with search rankings. Based on my apps about 16% of the people who see this dialog vote (I only show once after 3 app opens after that it doesnt show again) and about 90% of the people who vote rate it 5/5, 7% rate 4/5, less then 1% rate 2/5, 2% rate 3/5, and less then 1% rate 1/5.
5) User rentention. Give them a reason to keep the app installed on their phone. For example in the play store search google takes into account the % of people who downloaded your app and haven't uninstalled it to help determine rankings.

I would recommend using Facebook Groups to market your Apps...being that 50% or more of the people on Facebook are already on their android phones and it would be easier for them to just download your apps
