So perhaps all those inspirational motivation things people
stick up to read every day are negative rather than
positive benefits to a fair number of those who believe or
have a need for this kind of thing ?

Interesting article. Makes sense though. I believe that those who tend to have low self-esteem would have a harder time with "self help".

But, I can tell you from personal experience that it doesn't mean there's no hope. Persistence pays, as does putting yourself around the "right" people, places, circumstances, etc.

Nothing is etched in stone. The biggest problem I have seen is that many people just don't WANT to change, or believe they need to. For whatever reason, negativity seems way too predominant. People seem to like misery and wallowing in self pity. I don't base this on any research - simply what I have run across over the years.

It's a process. Changing does not come from reading one book, or anything like that. It takes commitment.

I was just a kid when "The Power of Positive Thinking" came out. I heard a couple of adults saying 'positive' things about it, but the idea baffled me. "You mean things are so bad I have to try and think positively?" There is a bit of built in self defeating duality to that strategy, unless I'm missing something. (Feel free to straighten me out if I am, or any time it is appropriate.)

Self help is what people do all day long - 'self help' is what they buy because they believe it when they are told they are doing it wrong.

I had a friend who lied to himself every morning in order to be 'positive'.

Every morning he would look in his mirror and tell himself that he was getting better every day. The sad part was, he thought that just saying it was all it took.

I think much of the "self help" stuff is damaging. Focusing only on yourself, what you think, how you feel, how others make you feel, blah blah - isolates you further.

It's the epitome of "it's all about me".
