I just saw this ad on LinkedIn.
This somehow made it through all the committees.

How is this possible? There are ONLY 16 WORDS in this ad.
One of them is a GLARING TYPO.

What can I say? -- Complete disbelief here.

... English speaking civilization you might want to add.

I won't be surprised if a few dozen smart-asses rush to correct this and say something like "Its should of be you're."

          should of pea, not bean

The English word pea, derives from Estonian pea (head). They have brains the size of a pea, so... And as always there's proof. Estonia has joined EU and Nato.

It isn't a "typo" at all.

              A "typo" is a typing error. This isn't. It's a grammatical error.

If you type "tour" instead of "your", that's a "typo". Writing "your" instead of "you're" is just defective grammar.

Not where I'm from. If someone types something that's incorrect, that's a typo.
If someone crashes their car because they were texting -- or if they steered left, instead of right -- it's still a "crash." Same twisted metal + broken glass.

I am actually not disturbed by the they're, there and their business.
But when I see people write "should of been" I want to brake their fingaz. And I am not even a violent person. When I catch a fly or a spider in my room I release it back to the nature. When I come back from woods with a basket of mushrooms, I gather all the insects which I accidentally kidnapped and drive them back to the woods. But people ... FT!

I feel your pain, HN. I also hate people who quickly ridicule people who commits said typos. Have they even considered the proximity of the letters? The invention of the word pwn is an example of this and it has been considered "internet grammar correct". Some grammar police they are acting all smug, don't you think?

That's how the error of not putting a comma before the "and" in a series came about. It's a news column squeeze. It drives me crazy because most people believe that's correct now. I believe in either AP or Chicago style, it is right in their prescribed grammar. Webster even thinks it just fine. It's not. At all. Leaving the comma out subconsciously indicates a false incongruity in one of the items.

The form should never be allowed in newsprint. Make the column wider - don't ditch the commas. They're there for their own good reason.

I see this sort of thing everywhere and it drives me insane. Blogs and websites are one thing, magazines are worse but books are, by far, the most inexcusable.

Modern books are full of typos. It's rare to find one in books from 1930 or earlier. Well, maybe not if you're reading pulp novels...

It came from when newspapers were typeset with lead slugs. If there wasn't room for a comma, it got left out of the line.

For trivia geeks, that's related to where the typesetting term 'leading' came from. If they wanted more vertical space ('line-height' in HTML and MS Word) between lines of type, they inserted thin lead sheets between the lines of character slugs.

P.S. That last sentence was just so you could fit all 3 of those in one sentence.

I don't know if that is another slight towards me, but I apparently haven't been involved with this thread, I don't have much hope for civilization, but spelling, and grammar, is the least of the concerns that make me feel that way.

    Steve,

I wouldn't call that a slight, no. Just some good-natured humor.

Mrs Wombat is, at this point, a largely mythical creature. Sort of the avatar of grammar cops, and a minor deity in the pantheon of conformity.

You are far from the only one here whose creative grammar would cause her distress.
