I am looking for a room for me and the girlfriend to crash in....for a week!

Sydney is expensive even for backpacking

yeh it is, but not as in ur face as amsterdam, if u know what i mean

lots of bars, music and cheap food. There used to be a parking garage there and the 1st floor was full of travellers desperate to sell their campers before thier flight... great way to to get a deal...

that was 15 or so years ago, so things may have changed just a little. ha ha

anyways have great trip and be carefull, Australia is one wild place!

Go to Victoria st at Potts Point. This runs parallel to the main road in Kings Cross. It contains numerous backpacker hostels.

You can reach it from the airport by train. Change trains at Central Station and get a train on the Eastern Suburbs/Bondi Junction line. Alight at Kings Cross station and you're there. One of the exits at KX station opens onto Victoria St.

If you are arriving at night you may have trouble with finding a vacancy. During the day it should be OK. If you want to book ahead, Google it and look for hostels at Potts Point. This is walking distance to the CBD city centre.

Bondi Beach also has a lot of backpacker accommodation but is further away from the CBD.

The weather at present is beautiful. Middle of winter but days are sunny and humidity is low. At 1pm in my kitchen (ie not in sun) it is 18 C (65 F).

Thanks for that we have just booked a hostel.... not cheap but it will do for 3 nights till we can find a campervan.... also a lot more expensive than first thought!!

Any suggestions what we can do for xmas and new year?

Are you referring to accommodation or entertainment?

For Xmas Day, Bondi Beach is the place to be if you're visiting from overseas. Thousands of travellers gather there to meet other visitors, especially from back home, and party the day away. Look for the Union Jack on the beach and you'll be welcome to join in.

The same applies to those from other countries - look for your national flag.

For New Year's Eve, there are parties at Bondi Beach, Kings Cross and Manly (a beach suburb on the northern side of the harbour) and a big one on the harbour near the Harbour Bridge. If you can afford it, book onto one of the ferries that will be celebrating on the harbour, with a front row seat of the fireworks (9 pm for the littlies, midnight for those a little bigger.

If you go into the city on NYE keep in mind that hundreds of thousands of people will all be looking for taxis at the same time, so consider how you'll get home.

If you're not on a ferry, the Irish pubs at The Rocks (fronting the harbour near Circular Quay) celebrate throughout the night. The Rocks (where the first settlers landed) gets pretty rowdy on NYE. All restaurants also have special bookings. Private parties are widespread and numerous.

We are after acommodation for 5 people for 4 weeks preferably near(ish) bondi beach!

any suggestions on where to stay or look?

I went travelling in 2006 and I can whole heartedly recommend tye 'wake up' hostel on George st. It's absolutely incredible how many amazing people you meet. I'm pretty sure it was $27aud a night but worth every penny.

Jobs are plenty in darling harbour. Me and my friend did 3 days work at $17 an hour just dismantling exhibition stands.

If I can give you any advice, just do what you plan originally to do - there is always a way to afford it!

We got a campervan in NZ but just stayed in hostels in Australia. I was also lucky enough to be able to stay in Artamin(sp?) for a couple of weeks with my friends family.

There's so much oppotunity in Sydney, especially with jobs. If all else fails go to star city casino!

Where abouts in mk are you from mate? It's weird actually seeing an Internet marketer from within a few miles of me... Does that make you competition?

If you buy a campervan, registration is included (provided it hasn't expired). In Australia, registration goes with the car. Just make sure the car is registered when you buy it.

Check the sticker on the window as it will indicate when registration expires.

That's right. A friend recently bought a second-hand car and transfer costs were about $A30 per $A1000 sale price.

when it nearly runs out do I need to get the camper tested?

When the rego is about to expire the vehicle needs to be mechanically inspected and the mechanic will issue a "Pink Slip" certifying the car is road worthy. This costs about $A50 (+ the cost of any repairs). The Pink Slip must be presented to the government office (RTA) at the time of applying for registration renewal, along with receipt showing payment of insurance.

However, it will cost about $600 for government charges and insurance to re-register the car so it's better to buy one that still has plenty of registration left so that you can re-sell it easily before you depart. That way, you don't have to pay anything extra beyond the cost of the vehicle and the transfer fee.
