hey, I got the job in NY, America which offers to pay 100000$ PA. Do you think I should take it?
What is the cost of living? Do you think it's a good Income In America?

That's a good income - higher than average by about double, but NY is one of the most expensive states to live in.

You didn't say where in NY your job would be located. If it's NYC - you better LOVE cities. That city is practically it's own state - and the rest of the state tries real hard not to claim it as being part of NY. If your job is in other areas of NY - you are looking at moderately dense populations, lush forestry, quaint historical architecture, mountains, and rivers. It's really beautiful in NY when you get out of that hell hole of a city. Of course, if you like huge metropolis areas, you probably won't dislike NYC. I just hate cities so take this all with a grain of salt.

I stayed with a friend in NY for the better part of a year - it wasn't near NYC - and other than the cost of living there, I found it a great place. I sometimes want to go back there - especially this time of year. In autumn when the trees change, the colors and scenic views are just breathtaking.

I have to go now before I convince myself to go rent that room again. Damn.

I have spent quite a bit of time in perhaps 6 areas of New York state. A couple, including NYC, are places I DON'T like, and they are EXPENSIVE! Look at the Seinfeld series. That makes new York city look BETTER than it is, but they STILL talk about the dirty water ways, the expensive housing/parking, and how many that could afford to drive DON'T! DON'T think that is a joke. When Rush Limbaugh was there, HE spoke of how expensive it was. I can tell you that it is true.

There ARE some nice places in New York as well. In a nice place, I might have jumped at a job for $80K. Other places, I wouldn't for $120K

BTW if you are coming here from another country, are you a US citizen? If not, does the employer know your status? Do you speak English OK? If not, do they know? If there are other costs, have you prepared for THAT? These are all things to remember.

Why do I get the feeling that this might be a scam? While there are certainly plenty of people earning six figures here in the States, jobs generally don't just magically appear, and there's almost always considerable competition. Care to share some details, such as how much money this employer is asking you to pay up front for this opportunity?

            100000$ PA.
Excuse my ignorance, but what does PA mean?
I'm the person Sal eluded to in her post. If you like big cities, you'll love New York City. It is huge and expensive. I live about 140 miles upstate near the capital and it's a different world up here.
If you could be more specific on where in New York you'll be going I can give you better information. There are other Warriors here from different parts of the state including the city.

Per Annum (PER YEAR) is not that unusual for foreigners.

A number of countries, including the US, have a special plan that is based on the premise that those countries have no skilled labor in certain fields, etc.... Granted, rules may vary a little, and I may have been told things incorrectly, but my understanding is:

IF you have a college degree and/or have unusual or specific experience
              AND
you have an invitation from an employer
              AND
you get OVER the market rate(WINK WINK )

That you may apply for an H1B VISA(At least that is what it is called in the US)
This allows one person to come here and work for a period of time at that job and basically act like a citizen. Outside of voting and welfare assistance, it is pretty much like they are a citizen. They are taxed as a resident alien.
If you wish, you can apply for an H4, which allows your spouse, and likely your whole family, over, but they are forbidden to work. They CAN, however, apply for a work permit and then work like someone with an H1B

There ARE other types of visas that are similar, but have different designations. H1B and H4 are probably the most common.

So NO, it isn't some weird scam in the traditional sense.

Well, I'm sure you know that there are a LOT of Indians here! On my last job, there weren't that many Indians. I was in a group of maybe 16, and only about 8 or so were Indians. BTW in case people are curious, my boss(Not one of the 16), the customer boss, the boss of that boss were all INDIAN!

From what I understand, in an H1B situation, your sponsor(your recruiter or employer here likely) effectively owns it, and pays for it. Before it expires, you must get it renewed, or get another vehicle(like citizenship) to stay. Again though, people have stayed here for over a decade and lived and had kids here. Apparently India takes its sovereignty seriously and won't let citizens born outside the country to vote in indian elections.
