One of my recent threads got deleted by a moderator. Unfortunately, not a virgin experience for me.

Anyhow, then something wonderful happened, I got a PM from the mod with a quick explanation.

Cool!

And Thanks!

Exact same thing happened to me yesterday...
The Mod that deleted it sent me a PM with the answer i was looking for and that was that... A pleasant experience for all concerned...
It's been a long time since i have had a thread deleted (But then i don't start threads often anyway)...

That is nice..........although not particularly needed in my case. When I write something that gets deleted, it's usually something I was hoping to slide by in the first place.

Same with me. Whenever I have a post or thread deleted, I know exactly why it was deleted.

That will last until they realize just how argumentative some people will be when their thread or post is deleted. What will happen then? Restore the thread? Avoid deleting posts by that person because you know there's an argument coming?

Explanation (with reference to the rules) could help new members but will keep mods busy if they try to explain to everyone.

        Why are posts/threads deleted?

        1. posting something you know is over the line but might slide by or at least be seen before deletion

        2. you haven't yet read the rules here - in which case you need to do that

        3. you read the rules but think they don't apply to you

Same thing happened to me. Explanation, even though I posted it in OT, "Belongs on blog."

In short, you can't post anything in this sub forum that is about you personally. If you do, it will get deleted. At least that's what I've been told.

Of course if you look around this forum you will see several posts of a personal nature that have not been deleted.

When asking a mod about this, was essentially told that my posts either lead to spam posting by other members (such as when I post a YouTube video of music I did) or are the type that lead to fighting. Also, because of my rep here over the years, I am essentially on a shorter leash than everyone else.

So now I just post stupid shit in this sub forum like Big Bang, Magic The Gathering and EQ Mastering videos. It's safe and won't get me in any trouble.

If I have anything to say about myself personally, you'll find it on my blog which I don't use.

So yeah, something good happened to me too. Full explanation for why my last 2 personal posts were deleted.

Doesn't mean I have to like it but there's not much I can do about it.

      What I'm wondering is this.

What happens if I have a question and really need help?

      Will that get deleted too.

I'll guess I'll find out when it is.

Okay, I'm going to actually attempt to act like an adult about all this and explain why I'm slightly annoyed.

For years I've been posting personal music videos here and it was never a problem. In fact, we had a voting contest one year to help me determine which songs to send to the Great American Song Contest.

Now all of a sudden personal music videos are not allowed?

It's the change in forum policy that has be annoyed. Something that was perfectly acceptable is now not. In fact, if you do a search through my threads, you'll find all my old videos still here.

So what's changed? That's all I want to know.

I wouldn't say posting personal videos was "perfectly acceptable"
it was just the old mods let you get away with it rather than have the forum
              filled with your whining threads.

            Steven,

Over time I've noticed a pattern of Les throwing digs at you for whatever reason, but this is coming from someone who I never see posting anything of substance or posting anything that helps anyone. He always posts short ignorant one liners.

Just ignoring him is the best solution.

You're right, I should just ignore him. Sometimes it's hard.

But I would like to know what's changed in forum policy where posting personal music videos was once okay but now is restricted to our blogs, which nobody reads.

                  Kay,

                  In theory, this could work.

The biggest problems were always time and arguments. The time issue is very different now, because of the number of people involved. There are now more than a dozen staffers doing the things that used to be done by 2 or 3 people.

If they have the right standards for how and when they notify people, and how often any one person gets notified, the amount of time per mod per day may be manageable. They'll figure that out fairly quickly, I think. They're a pretty smart group, and they're actively learning, rather than just going through prescribed motions.

If they refuse to argue or debate decisions, they'll be fine until they run headlong into the normal person turned psycho who gets his ego invested and becomes determined to win at all costs.

That's the real learning point. That's where you have to assess the averaged benefits and costs of the policy. There are a number of important variables that are different now, so it may result in a different decision.

They just need to develop the callouses that come with experience. Hopefully, they can do that and keep the optimism they have now intact.

                  Joseph -

You don't know the history or know much about Les (who is totally no-BS) so best not to pass judgment. Just gives Steven another excuse to be self righteous.

The old mods cracked down on Steven's rants some time ago and we didn't see it much....when the new owners took over, the rants began all over.
It's attention driven behavior and I don't know if Steven realizes what others see.

It's not just Steven - I've noticed several members have become more belligerent and outspoken, increasingly rude in their replies to others. I hope they crack down a bit on the rudeness and the personal drama. I think people are pushing the limits to see how far they can go.

And I think the limits have to be tightened because of that behavior.

I've seen the huge improvements as the new mods pick up the rhythm and flow of the forum. Obviously a well chosen and well trained group fully capable of keeping this place running smoothly.

I had doubts because I trusted the "old mods" - but the new kids on the block seem to be great!

If they refuse to argue or debate decisions, they'll be fine until they run headlong into the normal person turned psycho who gets his ego invested and becomes determined to win at all costs.
You and I could probably tick off names of those determined to win.

As long as the mods are firm and have a process (explain, defend, stop the crap) to deal with difficult members....it will work.

The explanation is great for new members who often have no idea where the lines are drawn. No more "unwritten rules".

I had great doubts. But have been really impressed by the forum-moderation over the last week.

Almost everything I've reported has been moved/removed (and really quickly, even at some funny times of day), and when the odd post hasn't it's been either highly "subjective"/"interpretative" or something I've wanted to comment on without any expectation that it would really disappear.

I've been trying to find a way to say so, without taking any risk at all of offending the "old mods" to whom I had many reasons to be grateful in the past. In short I had misjudged and misinterpreted "the situation with the new moderators" (several of whom have now kindly been in touch with me, too) and I'm really embarrassed by that. Thanks for saying much of what I've been thinking, Kay (and undoubtedly more tactfully than I'd have managed to say it! ).

                      Kay,

The new mods I've had opportunity to interact with are indeed a good crew. As they get used to communicating with each other, I expect they'll become a great team. A lot of that will depend on what policies are set, how much autonomy they're given, and how well they document activity. Learning the personalities is as important as the rules.
You and I could probably tick off names of those determined to win.
We may be talking about different groups here. I was referring to the type of person who starts a thread ranting about how evil the mods/forum/policies are over a deleted post, and then creates one new account after another when they get a temporary ban. All for the sake of getting other people to agree and join in their petty crusades, or just to "punish" whoever had the nerve to stop them from doing what they shouldn't have.

Stubborn people who continue a discussion with no purpose other than to make their point are a different thing. Sometimes that can be good.
The explanation is great for new members who often have no idea where the lines are drawn. No more "unwritten rules".
It's always been good for a fraction of the new members. The ones who think about the explanations and digest what they read. The ones who think they should be allowed to do and say what they want without any restrictions at all are the ones who make it a problem.

There really aren't a lot of unwritten rules. The ones most people mean when they say that have to do with pretty standard norms and expectations in online communities. Most of the rest have to do with people crossing the "self promotion" line, whether unwittingly or in an attempt to get around it deliberately.

But I see threads deleted, when they had some pretty good posts. I'd rather see them closed, instead of deleted. Mostly because I can't stand the idea that someone might miss out on my obviously genius opinions.

On the subject of the new mods, it looked to me as though the "thanks" thread was bumped to the top of the page a couple of days ago:

                          http://www.warriorforum.com/off-topi...-old-mods.html

By that I mean the displayed time of the last post in the thread didn't match, so I'm assuming it had mod help.

If that was so, it was a classy touch.

After finally putting my knee-jerk reactions toward some of the recent
decisions made by the new ownership and mods, I've begun thinking
a bit more lucidly on the entire matter.

Now, I'm obviously not privy to how much they paid to acquire the WF,
but I have no doubts it was quite a pretty penny? And I also have no doubts
that both the new ownership and its employees have only the best
of intentions, and I can't imagine they would act mechanically and
                            allow their investment to fail.

They're going to have to make some changes in the way the do things.
But if they're intelligent and continually strive to improve our experience
as members, then I see good things coming from them.

And we're also going to have to change the way we do some things.
But I know we're an intelligent group* and if we are patient as members,
then I know good things will keep coming from us as well.

Ah, I see. I must admit I'd sometimes been wondering how everyone apparently knew for how much the forum had changed hands. I think in the UK that kind of information becomes public (and only for listed companies) only at the end of the financial year following the year in which the transaction took place.

The ASX has very strict rules on "continuous disclosure" about acquisitions, divestitures, etc.. I'm actually quite surprised The City doesn't have similar rules.

I was that post. And it was because I mentioned a candidate's name. A little overprotective, maybe...but as long as the rules are enforced equally, it doesn't bother me.

Ah ha! It was your fault! Grrr. I didn't see that post. I must admit, I also included a former candidates name, but only as it is used as a description of something completely unrelated to politics and as a stepping stone for my genius joke. The new mods I've had opportunity to interact with are indeed a good crew. As they get used to communicating with each other, I expect they'll become a great team. A lot of that will depend on what policies are set, how much autonomy they're given, and how well they document activity. Learning the personalities is as important as the rules.

                        Paul
Exactly why I started "the way we were" thread.

We understand each member that we've interacted with for a long time. They may say things that would get a stranger deleted just because the other members understand where they are coming from. I know that people have said things to me (and probably visa versa) that would get others deleted. It seemed to me, not that the mods were allowing an attack, but that they knew me and knew that what was said wasn't gonna ruffle my feathers and let it ride.

I've, in turn said things to others that got deleted even though had I said them to someone else, the comment would have been allowed to ride.

That's one of the benefits of having mods that know their crowd. I'm thinking that as the new mods get to know us, they will let a few things ride that right now have to be dealt with in a very strict "by the book" fashion.

At this time it's probably easier for them also to delete whole threads rather than individual responses - other than in the case of extremely overt attacks or obvious spam posts.

At any rate, if things progress in a way that we don't feel comfortable with...it's not like this is the only forum on the net and we know where we can get off if the merry-go-round is making us sick.

Hey Steven - to be fair, I think that what's changed here is your signature-file, surely? If you have "Wags Royalty-Free Music" in your signature, then posting personal music videos perhaps comes across as "promoting your signature"? I'm not suggesting that's ever been your intention, obviously (in fact I know it hasn't been), but one could kind of understand it potentially coming across that way to people who weren't sure, and didn't really know you at all (i.e. new moderators)?

That does make sense. However, I can guarantee that if I posted a music video and removed my signature from the post, it would still get deleted.

You know what? It doesn't matter. I've finally latched onto a couple of things that are finally panning out and that's all that matters. In fact, sometime this weekend I'll drop you an email and let you know what's going on.

I'd post it here but it would only get deleted so I'll save myself the trouble.

Thanks for the insight. It does make perfect sense now that I'm no longer in the MMO niche.

Steven not taking a dig at you but this is what happens many, many times. A thread about a new (perhaps temporary) situation where moderators were giving a little heads up as to why a thread was deleted turned into something about you, and then fighting erupts, and then in many cases the thread is deleted.

There are currently 8 posts about the original theme and 10 revolving around you and you came to the party several hours after most of those 8 posts were made.

Just trying to understand why something I used to post was fine and now is not. Alexa gave me my answer and I'm fine with it.

I guess that means I can start talking about how to make money online since I no longer sell in that niche?

          Just kidding.

          I'm going out now.

    Frank,

That would not surprise me from any of the Freelancer crew. They're all that sort of gracious.

I don't think it was as much the "type of information" in the opening post as it was the direction and tone the thread was taking.
