Gone Girl: The Ending Sucked Big Time: WARNING SPOILER

I just got done reading Gone Girl. I could hardly put it down and there was more than enough psychosis and drama and surprises throughout the book to make it one of the best I've read lately ... until that ending. I just couldn't believe the ending. I Googled Gone Girl ending and it appears that the movie ends basically the same way. Lame.

Anyone else read or see the movie and hate the ending?

I haven't read the book, but I'm told the movie is faithful to the plot (it was part-scripted by the author). From my point of view, whole chunks of the plot, not just the ending, bordered on the ludicrous, but I'm a Rosamund Pike fan, so at least the movie afforded some enjoyment.

I really liked the book a lot. Maybe I'll just suck it up and see the movie anyway. How did you feel when the movie ended? I mean, the word ludicrous didn't come to mind when I read the book. Diabolical and psycho bitch came to mind.

Over here, the movie (which I haven't seen) has had very mixed reviews from the "quality arts/cultural media".

I suspect from what I've read that in this case (although it's quite often the other way round, with movies of modern books!) the critics who liked the book very much also liked the movie, and vice-versa.

The whole thing's quite a success-story for the author, though: I must admit I wouldn't mind knocking out a book that sold on that scale and had a movie made so quickly. On the other hand, though, its proportion of 1* to 5* reviews on Amazon (just one of those little Lexy-parameters for the obsessional analysts among us ) constantly runs at around 20%, which is a very unusual (high) figure for a well-known, widely discussed bestseller.

Well, indeed ... this is maybe the reason for all those 1* reviews? Hard to know, sometimes, but women buy more books than men ...

          .

She's all that, and then some. I was cheering her on.

There were instances throughout the movie when I was saying to myself; "He would never have done that!" or "Why didn't the police do this?", but yes, the ending was a little ... weird - although perhaps not entirely out of context with the rest of the film.

However, I didn't leave the theater wanting to read the book.

            Suzanne -

We must have the same book list - I read it last week. The ending stunned me but then I thought I should have seen it coming. What I felt was sympathy for the dark and complex family the fictional child would have to live with.

lol ... sounds like we were reading it at the same time. Yeah ... me too, about the fictional kid. But stunned is exactly the word I was looking for when I got to the end.

Well, after I thought about the ending, I thought the author must have done this to leave it open for a sequel. If so, can't wait.

They've made me curious as well. Not so much to see the movie, but to read the book. Another addition to the "to do list".

Why do garden gnomes smell so bad?
So that blind people can hate them as well.

I read the book to see if I wanted to see the movie. I like to both read the book and see the movie. It's usually two different experiences. I can almost feel the psycho tension that the movie could build up visually. Funny ... in the book I was cheering her on a bit, but I flip flopped between love and hate, but by the end ... no, I don't think I was on her side. lol. I won't spoil it for Claude ... but not after D ... not that D didn't sort of deserve it.

I read the Wikipedia summary. I sometimes do. So I know the story, pretty much.

I see. lol. I wouldn't do that if I hadn't seen the movie or read the book, but I really think you'd love it. It's kind of a thriller and psychological and diabolical. Seemed to be going one way and then a lot of surprises along the way. Great cast of characters too. Perfect for the movie.

Yeah I read the synopsis and plot on Wikipedia, it seems to derail towards the end... A shame I guess, seems like a thrilling movie at a first glance!

To me ... it didn't derail at all at the end ... and I wasn't at all disappointed until the very last page, literally. Probably the very last paragraph. I was waiting for revenge and didn't get it. But I do believe that the end may have been engineered to provide an opening for a sequel, which in that case, I'll forgive the author, and definitely catch the sequel.
