Guiding Light, the longest running soap ever, is going off the air this September.

Phillip Spaulding just happens to have a rare lung disease that will also take
his life in a few months.

It's going to be a real tear jerker for Guiding Light fans as Rick, Beth and
Mindy watch the 4th Musketeer die and Guiding Light go off into the sunset.

Just goes to show you...nothing lasts forever.

That is not one of 'mine', Steven. I can't believe you watch soaps! (not usually a 'guy' thing, is it?) I'm sorry - it is a major bummer when you lose something you are used to.

I have watched All My Children, One Life to Live and General Hospital for probably 30 years - When I worked I could still follow just by watching on sick days, vacations, holidays etc (yes that is how slow they move lol)

I could never make plans because any day off was 3 hours of soaps 12-3pm
However after 4.5 years at home I am now sick of them everyday and for the past several months only watch General Hospital - and not everyday.

    Tears and Soap suds...

At one time or another, I have watched the following daytime soaps

      Currently

      Guiding Light
      All My Children
      One Life To Live

      Previously

      As The World Turns
      Capitol
      Edge Of Night
      Bold And The Beautiful
      Search For Tomorrow
      Dark Shadows

My all time favorite soap was Edge Of Night. If you loved mysteries, this
was one show that was hard to beat.

I still miss it to this day.

"Three of these things belong together,
One of these things is not the same..."

It was the "Batman" of soaps, in both the literal and figurative senses.

        My favorite soap was Soap.

The only soap I ever watched.
I had never heard of Billy Crystal till then.

Does space opera count? If so, I'm guilty. Very, very guilty.

Battlestar Galactica (the new one, not that sad waste of celluloid from the 70's) was one of the best written series ever, despite the absence of Barnabas Collins.

Then there's Andromeda. Written by the counsellors from Camp Schlock, it's got to be the most fun sci-fi series since Lost in Space. It's the only series I've ever gotten on DVD and watched all the way through, in order. All 110 episodes...

The only day-time soap I ever watched was a short period of General Hospital. The Ice Princess story arc.

While Dark Shadows was definitely "different" than the others, it occupied
the 4 PM time slot during the week and was considered one of the daytime
soaps. It was ahead of its time and beyond description. I watched every
          single episode growing up.

Soap was one oddball show. I loved it probably more than any soap I'd
ever watched for its pure madness, mixed in with some poignant moments,
          usually supplied by Katherine Helmond.

Another show where I never missed an episode and when it went off the
air it left a void that no show has been able to fill since.

SHe was good, then so was 'Gretchen'.
I just realized that song I mentioned was never in soap.
I was thinking that Martin Mull was in Soap when he was actually in Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman and Fernwood Tonight. Two other great shows.

I was just thinking about Mary Hartman! That was so great! Only one actress and I can't think of her name ever came back in anything else. Her name is on the tip of my tongue... (hate that!)

I loved Dark Shadows for sure. Along those lines I just loved 'Twin Peaks' which was David Lynch's foray into night soaps - too weird for most people, same as Dark Shadows I guess. At least I got the video of the pre-quel movie.

Even wrote nasty letters to the network - can't remember which one. Oh, I think it was XFiles speaking of addiction, too weird, and all time favorites . At least I got a whole stack of videos of the various episodes on eBay.

Somewhere I read how people can't relate when all the characters are dispicable people. I think that is what turned me off with All My Children eventually. You just hate to see them get away with stuff over and over.

I lost it on One Life to Live because of all the ridiculous 'multiple personalities' and stupid 'life after death' scenes. It is just really tired to see the same thing over and over.

With General Hospital it just goes around in circles with the hospital staff, gangsters getting shot, family being in critical condition and making miraculous recoveries, over and over ya dah ya dah. I am actually pretty sick of it too but just hanging on to something familiar.

That's as shocking as when The Edge of Night went off the air.

Oh, crap, now everyone knows I'm old.
