Hey fellow warriors,

I'm curious as to what's your favorite music genre?

I'm a pretty all around guy when it comes to music, however my favs are as follows:

Classical
Hip-hop
House
EDM (Electronic Dance Music)
Alternative Rock
R&B
Jazz
Raggae
Reggaeton

What about yours? Anybody else like the same type of jams?

Would love to see who likes what?!?

We have very different tastes in music, Michael. Nothing wrong with that, of course, it just seemed a little unusual that with your expansive list there wasn't much for me to latch on to. There are songs I like in the genres you listed, but few of the songs and none of the genres would be favorites.

For what it's worth, here's mine...

    Blues
    Hard Rock
    Blues
    Classic Rock
    Blues
    Acoustic Rock/Folk
    Blues
New Age (much of which I don't like, but some stuff is really good)
    Blues
Country Rock (again, much of it I don't like, but some stuff is really good)
    Blues

    Did I mention the blues?

      country rap
Pretty small selection there. "Dirt Road Anthem" is pretty much it, that I know if. Well, there's that dreck Cowboy Troy tries to pass off as rap, if you want to be liberal in your definition.

Personally, I like both kinds of music. Country and western.

Colt Ford's 'Cold Beer' has a little rap to it. Kinda. Sorta.

Eh. Might have tried, but I wouldn't qualify it as rap. Ford's missing an attitude and flow that "Dirt Road Anthem" has in spades.

Mixing country and rap and keeping both real ain't easy, it seems.

  • Wow, this list of genre's is far more expansive than I thought lol.

    What about a favorite artist?

I know that's a much tougher question to answer based on how many genere's most of us like to listen to.

I will drop a few names here:

    Drake
    The Weekend
    Showtek
    David Guetta
    Pitbull
    Red Hott Chilli Peppers
Incubus - one of my all time favs!
    Eminem
    Rick Ross
    Buju Banton
    Wison Y Yandel
    Bob Marley
    Mary J Blidge.

And I don't know the names of any Jazz artists - I just like listening to Jazz. My grandpa traveled the world as a sax player - and so I love music just because it's a great stimulation.

But I think that it's really up to the environment you were brought up in that has a lot to do with your music tastes, not to mention the time frames also.

I'm a headbanger. Any era. I also like classical rock, soft stuff like Seals and Crofts. But I love thrash and whatever class you put stuff like Megadeth, Disturbed, Tool, Rob Zombie and the like into.

Now for my deepest darkest confession - being an ex dance teacher....I'm kinda fond of
disco, too.....shhhh - don't ever tell anyone I said that.

You're jammin' big time! Disco is on my list too but I made sure to sneak it in at the bottom.

Those bands you have listed are of course metal bands, and most of their music would fall into these sub-genres.

      Heavy Metal
      Alternative Metal
      Progressive Metal
      Groove Metal
      Industrial Metal
      Thrash Metal

My comments about Hendrix and John Lennon and the others were in jest. Back when I was probably around your age we had this thing called Disco. It was very important to hate it if you were any kind of rock and roll cat. So I hated it.

But not really. The band I posted isn't about "she." They're called Abba and I always secretly loved them though I would have never admitted it back then. They had dozens of hits back in the 70s. Abba wasn't really known for Disco though it fit in nicely with the music that was popular during the Disco days. I've got their greatest hits collection and play it from time to time. It brings back memories. Sort of like this one:

        • Haha very clearly - this music is before I was born, but it;s great stuff man! So there was something called Disco that really existed . . . I thought that was only a myth . . . like flying pigs. I'm joking by the way.

So this dude who sings the winner song, I feel like I've heard that song on a commercial somewhere . . . Not exactly sure where, but I've heard it somewhere. Great song - whats the name of this band?

It's funny how much music has changed, now it's all about B.S. and garbage, whereas before music used to have an actual message and a meaning in it. Not saying that I wish things were the way they were before (because life is constantly changing and you can't control it) however I think it's interesting when you step back and observe just where music has come from - to where it's going now.

I will say I've been listening to more Mozart than ever before because of the state of popular culture music.

          That's just me though.

I know it's a rhetorical question, but, I think that would be a yes, several times.
Although Savoy Brown is not listed as an influence in this article. Tell Mama
was released in 1971, Free Bird was released in 1973. Pre-runner band to
      Skynyrd was formed in 1965.

Kim Simmonds, lead vocals/guitar of Savoy Brown left home at 16 to pursue
      his calling.

I saw Savoy Brown at the Little Bear in Evergreen, CO around 2006 or 2007.
Very, very loud, but very clear sound. The bass guitar vibrated everything,
but it was still very enjoyable. Sounding good loud seems to be a big difference
between top musicians (and equipment) and most good local bands.

        Hey Dan...Actually, it was't rhetorical.

I'd put CCR and Allman bros as the bands that laid the ground work for "southern rock". But Savoy Brown had some elements of southern rock too, especially Tell Mama.

The Little Bear is a Colorado classic, maybe only behind Red Rocks on the list of coolest places ever to see musicians here.

Southern Rock is one of my favorites.

I'll be happy to keep rap out of country.
Just not a good mix IMO.

Totally surprised Dennis did not list Blues as one of his favorite genres.

Such a good song, had to post it:

        Paul,
'Fraid it's too late to stop the crossovers.

I need Sal's Unhear it book. I perused the
videos related to Colt Ford's songs on YouTube.

There's a lot of Country Rap (CRAP) or Redneck Rap out there.

Not going to waste the bandwidth/loadtime, but "The Lacs"
and "Moonshine Bandits" are ones to watch. Or not.

    Classical
    Hip-hop
    House
    EDM (Electronic Dance Music)
    Alternative Rock
    R&B
    Jazz
    Raggae
    Reggaeton

What about yours? Anybody else like the same type of jams?

Would love to see who likes what?!?

    Michael

I'll take the Funk and Jazz Fusion as first choices but my itunes/iphone collection has over 1400 of my favorite tunes and over 125 playlists with the best tunes from almost every major genre from classical to salsa, specific artist playlists and many topical playlists such as songs revolving around the weather etc.

I even have a ole school NFL Films playlist and here's an example.

    Kurt,

Wrong rhythm and rhyming scheme for it, but we'll cut him some slack. He was an OG before rap was invented.

    Dan,

Thanks, but my mind would reject my ears if I got too much more "pseudo" than that last Colt song.

I'll bet Johnny Cash could have done it up right, though.

Or BB King. I can hear him growling one out.

The problem with these music threads is that people remind
me of so much great stuff I quickly run out of "Thanks".

Speaking of Johnny Cash and along the line of crossovers,
he was the one and only person that could "steal" this song
    from Trent/NIN:

    Mike,

Cash was one of those that just didn't fit in any boxes. He was inducted into 3 musical Halls of Fame (Country, Rock and Roll, and Gospel), was a hero to punk rockers and folk musicians alike, and defied the whole country music establishment to push his songs about the way native Americans were mistreated. He helped so many people up the ladder it's crazy.

Not to mention being able to make "Hurt" sound like one of his own.

"My Way" could just as easily have been a Cash song.

pub rock of the 70s and 80s, from britain, australia new zealand, think graham parker, rockpile, stiff label;kursaal flyers, australian crawl, missing link label hello sailor and flying nun label

    britpop, principally oasis

but i hate the concept of genre. it is just another excuse for reading, writing, talking about music, instead of listening to it

to me, there are only three genres, good, bad and ok

it used to be music i bought, i liked and i never bought, but times have changed

pray tell what genre are the beatles?
