Local news - trying to get attention.

Using this line to promote tonight's local newscast - and another reason I don't watch local news.

"Why OUR state doesn't have a strict law to protect trick or treaters from sexual predators."

Huh? Like if they don't have a specific law - kids are fair game? I think not.

That's not stupid media - that's stupid legislators wasting our money trying to look busy when they should be addressing other stuff. It's duplicating about every law we already have. The media is just reporting it from the slant they were told to report it from.

I think it's only asking for trouble to allow your children to go door to door asking for sweets/is this not the same as we should teach our kids not to accept sweets from strangers..

Our country has made a few really dumbass laws over the years, or the law allows trick and treating..this rubbish should be banned.

Halloween is a much cherished holiday here - and a favorite holiday for many. Kid's aren't fooled into thinking because they trick or treat that it's okay to just take things from strangers on a regular basis.

We used to go all over when we were kids, though, and now I think they stick mostly to their own communities where they are at least a bit familiar with the people. They usually have older kids or adults along with them, or travel in bigger groups.

I would be furious if trick or treating were actually legislated or illegalized. That's not our government's job and we have their nose into way too much already that isn't any of their business. If your community isn't safe for trick or treaters, you have one heck of a lot more problems than Halloween.

I agree !! And here in the States it seems to have been getting bigger and bigger each year.

As a 40 something I love Halloween almost as much as my 4 and 5 year old. It is something the last 3 or 4 generations here has indeed cherished.

It gives us adults a chance to be kids just one more time

I get it, and agree. Their headlines and teasers are sensationalist fraud. And that the first reason I don't watch the local news. All channels do it.

In the UK we have a mainstream tabloid daily newspaper called the Sun.

Back in the seventies and eighties it was at it's worst with it's front page headlines.

"Freddy Starr Ate My Hamster" was a classic. (About a UK comedian)

When the Falklands war was on the Suns headline about the British Navy sinking the Argentinian ship The General Belgrano, killing many (as it was steaming away from the exclusion zone we had put around the island) was (in large print)

      "GOTCHYA"

      Unbelievable insensitivity

Some verbal quotes can be highly effective though. The British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen who did the hilarious film Borat was promoting his third film "Bruno"

At the premier in the UK he said "This is the most important film about a gay Austrian since Terminator 2"

This is a masterpiece by Freddie Starr as he tells a joke on a talk show to Mohamed Ali

Yes, magazines in AU, do it all the time as well, they say the duckess is going to have twins, and they take a shot of her, after she stumbles out of a restaurant!

The mags have proven they BS, to sell more copies!

Well the news stations do as well,....breaking news, the local footballer has broken his ancle! Grrrr!

That isn't breaking news, "Russia Launches Tactical Nuke at New York, the Fatalities are in the hundreds of thousands"!

That is breaking news, not some sporting celebrity!

There have been specific laws against it for HUNDREDS of years! But SOME feel that a lack of a specific detail, even if unnecessary, means the law doesn't apply. SO, when people had recordings, they figured they could RECORD a copyrighted book. Ever see copyright messages NOW? They broadly include seemingly EVERYTHING! SO, the fact that taking a person against their will, doing certain things to thiem, etc.... isn't specific enough because this is HALLOWEEN!!!!!!! GIVE ME A BREAK!

The FBI has relatively few parts to their mission statement, but one thing SPECIFICALLY spelled out is KIDNAPPING. And going across state lines is even WORSE. And sexual predation is protected to such a degree that minors are assumed to not know anything and thus can not give consent. So if you are an adult, and you have sex with a minor that consents, and everything is amicable and harmless, you can STILL get thrown in jail for statutory rape, because the STATUTE says they can NOT consent.

There are SOOOOOOOO many laws against a sexual predator, that it is ludicrous to say there are none. And they are country wide. Some states MIGHT let you get away with the kind of rape I described, because they allow younger people to consent(In some cases it may be 14, in others 19), but that is about it. Still, if they DON'T consent, it is just regular RAPE, and the statute reference may be added simply to add a charge.

Two of the kids on my street explained to me they were going "trunk or treat" this weekend.

It's their weekend with their father and in his town people gather at a huge community parking lot and open their car trunks and pass out treats to the kids. These boys are really excited about it. They said "it's really dark and a little scary" () and "the people give really good treats".

It sounded like safe fun to me - no traffic driving through - people who know each other.

Please do not 'release balloons' for celebrations. The balloons and trailing ribbons entangle birds and kill wildlife and livestock that think the balloons are food.
