MILK may not be so good for you. Vegetarians have been preaching this for a long time now. Mother's milk is for human babies and cattle milk for calves. Adults don't need to drink milk. And the calcium argument is a myth. Well here is the science now ...

That's very interesting. The only thing that got me was the focus on a high consumption of milk and dairy.

Just thinking out loud but perhaps a low or medium or moderate use of milk and dairy products may have different results?

Also when my Mum grew up in a rural village, all the milk came from local cows and these farmers made the cheese and dairy. Further more the milk was all full fat, there was no semi skimmed, skimmed or any of the others we have.

Is it therefore possible the mass production is also to blame?

The survey claims to have studied the health of men and women consuming one or more glasses of milk a day, but evidently didn't take into account the associated cookie intake.

Seriously, can there really be that many adults drinking several glasses of milk as part of their daily diet? It's also worth noting that the study suggests fermented milk products such as cheese and yogurt may have the opposite effect of plain milk and be especially beneficial.

I drink a big glass of milk with each meal. When I worked in construction years ago I used to drink chocolate milk by the quart. Work hard, drink hard.

I just had a physical a few months ago and I'm in great shape. All that milk drinking and sugar intake apparently hasn't done me any harm.

The BMJ study about mammograms has been criticized as deeply flawed. Their cell phone study is being criticized as deeply flawed even before its public release. Their reviews of vitamin D research has been criticized as deeply flawed. They've been criticized for publishing papers without peer review. Their BMJ Plagiocephaly Study has been called severely flawed.

Is the criticism about them fair, or agenda-driven? To be honest, I don't know, and I'm not interested in it enough to find out. I didn't even read the article linked in the OP.

I do know one thing though, studies like these are often seriously flawed.

If you're going to drink with a meal, milk is far better than water. Milk is a food and won't dilute the stomach's digestive juices like water does.

I'd drink it myself, but it wouldn't mix with the wine.

Oh thank God for that. If I ever wander down a rabbit hole and start commenting I don't think any of these essential parts of our diet are necessary, please do set me straight with as much force as possible.

And this: Debunking The Milk Myth: Why Milk Is Bad For You And Your Bones

Why the "Milk Myth" ever came to be is utterly crazy. Calcium is readily available in a natural, healthy diet that never involves cows' milk. Furthermore, if all the huge milk producing dairy lots scattered around the country were eliminated, it would do a great deal to help the environment as well as remove a great deal of cruelty. Every step of milk production involves animal cruelty.

I don't drink milk, neither did I give my 5 kids milk. They were
all breast-fed and later used soy or almond milk. The only
break is that we may use ice-cream if offered outside the home,
lest we appear like some weirdos. Well, not really the reason
but I don't make it such a big deal.

But the "Got Milk" commercials have really sold Americans
that they NEED milk for strong bones and teeth--now we "know"
    it's the opposite.

One other popular drink that doesn't enter my home is Soda.

And all these years, I thought I was the only person to feel like (a) god after drinking milk. Well, there ya go. I'm not sure if I agree with the statement re delusions of ganja.

I read somewhere, quite a while ago, that humans are the only mammals to drink milk after the weaning thing is over, or whatever it's called.

I've also felt the arguments for drinking milk were just marketing created by the dairy industry for obvious reasons. So...

I've read that milk causes excessive mucus production. I do believe that because I can see it in myself. I've always loved milk, still do and will continue enjoying it. Moo.

Back in the 90s my best friend from high school, who had married and had a few kids, told me about his son who had chronic ear infections. Switching into medical sleuth mode, I asked if his son drank milk. He said his son loves milk and drank a lot of it. He also mentioned that the doctor was starting to lean toward ear surgery for some reason I cannot recall.

I explained the bit about too much mucus. And I suggested the excessive mucus was trapping microscopic varmints and causing constant ear infections. Then I suggested his son cut back on milk or stop drinking it and see what that produces.

After a month, my friend called me and reported that his son's ear infection cleared on its own and he had been fine ever since. My friend's regard for me, in addition to his wife's, increased immeasurably. Of course.

I became convinced that milk was responsible and just knew I had qualities befitting a deity.

      Hey Ken,

This is probably because cats aren't very good at milking cows.

Dogs also love milk, although too much will give them a case of the squirts.

And I'd bet omnivores like pigs, bears and racoons also like milk. I don't know about animals like deer, but I have a feeling they would drink cow's milk if it was available to them.

Plus, I doubt many housewives had affairs with the vegetable man.

I love milk. I'll stop drinking it when they pry the glass out of my cold, dead hand.

You'd win that bet I've seen all those animals drinking milk when it was available (except bears, at least in person). I've also heard stories of fawns loosing their mothers and nursing off cows in the pasture. Spend some time in a milking barn and you stop being surprised over what different animals like milk

Interesting thread and an interesting (but inconclusive) study in the BMJ.

Regardless of how anyone feels about milk consumption, this study shouldn't be one on which to base any decisions.

First, self-report studies (e.g. using questionnaires or surveys) are inherently flawed. There's frequently a fair amount of discrepancy between what people say they do and what they actually do. The researchers in this study have absolutely no way of knowing how accurate people's responses were; the actual amount of milk consumed wasn't controlled by the researchers. This isn't to say, necessarily, that people were intentionally lying. But a lot of people tend to overestimate or underestimate their consumption of things, and relying on recall (particularly over several years) can be problematic.

The second major thing to take into consideration with this study is the word "association" in the results. Association (or correlation) is not the same as causation. Two things can be highly correlated with each other, but that doesn't automatically mean that one causes the other. That's vital to keep in mind, and also part of the reason the article concludes with this statement:

Given the observational study designs with the inherent possibility of residual confounding and reverse causation phenomena, a cautious interpretation of the results is recommended.

The other major flaw in this study is that it didn't take into account the type of milk consumed. There's a huge difference between pasteurized, homogenized, low-fat (skim, 1%, 2%) milk from factory farmed cows that have been fed unnatural and unhealthy grain-based diets, and pumped with antibiotics and hormones, and raw, organic, milk from grass-fed cows that haven't been treated with antibiotics and hormones. The vast majority of research done on the dangers of drinking milk is based on the former, not the latter, type of milk. So, the results are skewed right from the beginning.

The argument that humans are the only mammals to drink milk after they're weaned is also seriously flawed. We're the only mammals with the intelligence and ability to milk other animals. And it's not like humans continue drinking milk from their mothers into adulthood. In the wild, predatory animals will drink the milk when they kill a lactating animal for food (e.g. when lions kill a lactating zebra). They don't ignore the milk and just leave it. Many other mammals will drink milk if given the opportunity as well.

As for milk causing excess mucus production and other problems. That depends largely on the person. A large percentage of the population is lactose intolerant to varying degrees, but not everyone is. Also, many people who have problems with conventional, pasteurized milk can drink raw milk with no problems at all. Not to mention, since the SAD (standard American diet) is disastrous to gut health, many people find that once they heal their gut, they can tolerate dairy and other formerly problematic foods, like nightshades and foods containing FODMAPS.

As for the calcium and bones argument. I agree with Annie there. You can get plenty of calcium from non-dairy foods. However, other nutrients also play a vital role in bone health, including vitamins D3 and K2, potassium, and magnesium. Focusing on calcium and neglecting the others actually promotes bone loss rather than prevents it.

One last thing; soy milk is probably one of the worst things you can consume as a milk substitute. First, around 90% of soy grown in the U.S. is genetically modified. Second, soy can wreak havoc on hormones, leading to all sorts of health issues. Third, soy intolerance and allergies are pretty common.

Studies like the one referenced by the OP are inconclusive and seriously flawed. Sadly, these are the types of studies that people are quick to quote to support their personal bias, whatever that may be. Understandably so, as that's human nature, but even as this study's author stated, you must use caution in interpreting the results.

I do eat cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese and other milk products ... all in moderation and have no intention of eliminating them.

There was the same crap over eggs ... egg industry says "incredible edible egg" ... news and other sources says cholesterol blah blah blah.

Eat what you want and drink what you want. The key in everything is moderation. Milk isn't going to kill anyone anytime soon.

I'm with Suzanne - never liked the taste of milk so I used it only to wet down my cereal and I don't finish off the milk left in the bowl, either.

Whatever you eat, drink, do - is often fine within limits - in moderation. Overdoing or overeating anything can be bad for you.

I agree with both Suzanne and Kay.

If you're not supposed to eat eggs, bacon, milk or it's by products like cheese, butter, etc., because they're unhealthy, then what the heck are you supposed to eat for breakfast????

These studies change every few years, so my advice would be, pick what you like, injest it (with moderation) and enjoy yourself. If you like milk, drink it.

I was just clowning around, but I wouldn't trust anything that the FDA says. The FDA considers anything that can make a profit as "good for you"

There is a reason the U.S has one of the highest rates of cancer and obesity, and it's because the FDA allows us to be poisoned in the name of profits. If you look at the contries with the lowest cancer rates, it's poor countries where food is not so plentiful.

Respectfully Suzanne I disagree with you.

I have been watching the real life Show " Surgeon Oz " on OWN.

I never liked Dr. Oz until I starting watching this the last few weeks.

Believe it or not ( I couldn't at first) this guy is a real sweetheart. I mean he really is.

His whole demeanor is one of true sincerity and he is really a caring person. I have NEVER seen any doctor s so down to Earth in person or on TV.

It is not BS either. I can tell when its for Ratings and it is not. He is just truly a hellavu guy.

Case and point. One episode had this man in his thirties have a sudden Aorta Collapse right there on Camera. It was one of the most unbelievable things I have ever seen on Reality TV.

Dr. Oz was making casual rounds in the ER ( and the camera crew just happened to be there filming) He stopped and was talking to this guy and everything was fine and very calm. The man said he had been having some pain and breathing problems, and telling his story , and joking with Dr. Oz ,then all of the sudden out of nowhere he clutched his chest and said he was having exactly what his dad died years ago. An massive Aorta collapse and hemorrhage.

It was extremely alarming and Dr. OZ began rubbing his forehead and telling him ( after the guy kept saying he was dying) that he was not going to let this happen. It was really moving.

Like I said I thought he was a guy who was fame and money hungry. But he is really not. It seems that way on the Dr. Oz show but that is really not him.

He is one of those guys who you scratch your head and ask the question "how can someone so smart, rich, and powerful be so truly humble."

              Its weird.

FTC Charges Green Coffee Bean Sellers with Deceiving Consumers through Fake News Sites and Bogus Weight Loss Claims | Federal Trade Commission

The Federal Trade Commission has sued a Florida-based operation that capitalized on the green coffee diet fad by using bogus weight loss claims and fake news websites to market the dietary supplement Pure Green Coffee. Popularized on the syndicated talk show The Dr. Oz Show, green coffee bean extract was touted as a potent weight loss treatment that supposedly burns fat.

The FTC alleged that weeks after green coffee was first promoted on The Dr. Oz Show, the defendants behind Pure Green Coffee – Nicholas Congleton, Paul Pascual, Bryan Walsh, and the companies they control – began selling their Pure Green Coffee extract, charging about $50 for a one-month supply. They marketed the dietary supplement through ads on their own sales websites – with names such as buypuregreencoffee.com, buygreenweightloss.com, greencoffeeweightcontrol.com. The sites featured footage from The Dr. Oz Show, .....

The case against the company that he shilled for was sued by the FTC ... not the FDA and it was for deceptive claims, naturally. It appears that green coffee bean extract doesn't make you thin, in spite of what Dr. Oz says, and the company had to pay a $3.5 million dollar fine for those deceptive claims.

Perhaps. There have been some extremely good performances acted out in the public spotlight before, though. Even if true, that doesn't necessarily discount what I found about him.

Then there's a lawsuit that the judge refused to hear where the man got 2nd and 3rd degreee burns from following his TV advice. The Judge says that listening to a "TV personality" isn't the same as a Dr./patient communication, so he wouldn't hear the case.

So we feed cows an unnatural diet, them pump them full of antibiotics because if it. Then we inject them with rBGH so they will produce more. Then it's pasteurized to kill all the harmful stuff that's now in the milk because of the unnatural diet antibiotics and rBGH, which also kills the good stuff.
Then it's Milk is bad for you, gee I wonder why?
But even dismissing all that milk (from any species) is for feeding newborns. It's 'designed' to give the nutrition needed for that particular mammal. So I can see where raw milk from properly fed mammals could be good for you in limited quantities. But like with just about anything else to much could be bad for you.
The milk you normally get in stores on the other hand is just about only good for wetting cereal and lightening the color of coffee.
I do drink milk but only around 2 cups worth in mu morning shake and also from producers who don't inject their cows with rBGH. I really prefer Goats milk, but it's to damn expensive in the store and my friend doesn't have her female goats anymore

I agree that the way milk is produced today is not only unhealthy - it's criminal. I love milk but won't touch it unless it's organic........and even then, I want raw. Raw milk has all the benefits that are killed when it is pasteurized.

I was never sucked in to the "butter is bad for you, non-fat" bs that hurt so many people. I love butter and eat a lot of it - same, organic. Cheese is also a staple in my diet.

Milk was just fine for us until the 1950's when it started to have all the beneficial elements cooked out of it, and later when it became loaded with growth hormone and antibiotics (and the cows fed GMO grain) that it became walking poison. Factory farm is good for nobody -- and it is pure torture to animals. If you buy factory farmed meat - you are funding torture. Period. People don't need to stop eating meat or dairy - but they need to cut down to a reasonable amount and they need to start buying only organic - if for no other reason than to put the factory farms out of business. It's ridiculous to eat meat 3 times a day. Your body isn't constructed for that much meat protein.

As far as mucus production - Ken's right. If I start having a problem with allergies or asthma, or have an infection, the first thing I do is cut off the dairy. It's the only time I cut it off, though.

Organic, or raw milk product, is very expensive out here, but then, cancer is known to cost a little bit, too.

Question for anyone. If milk is so bad why is it the first thing fed to the new born of all mammals?
Milk didn't become bad until we started adulterating the processes that lead up to it's consumption.

Wrong!! Water is the first thing given to a baby within the initial 7days.

So far, humans don't get side effect from drinking water. It can only be dangerous when it gathers in large quantity (SEA) or comes with full force.

Really? Because I've watched more live births of mammals from cats and dogs to goats and cows then I can count. Always saw the mother's offer their teat for nourishment and never a bowl of water.

Same here, Thom. I grew up on a farm with lots of animals. I've never seen a newborn calf, foal, kitten, or puppy given water first - let alone for the first 7 days. They start nursing from the mother from day one. If the mother's unable to nurse for some reason, they will sometimes nurse from another lactating animal (if available) or may be bottle fed with some type of formula to substitute for the mother's milk.

Not often. But cows don't know how to enslave humans and use machines to extract the milk.

And, other animals don't know how to milk cows or goats.

And how many of us would enjoy a glass of cat or dog milk?

Here's a little more on cross mammal breast feeding.
The breastfeeding by humans of animals is a practice that is widely attested historically and continues to be practiced today by some cultures. The reasons for the practice are varied: to feed young animals, to drain a woman's breasts, to promote lactation, to develop good nipples, to prevent conception and so on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human%..._breastfeeding

As for Calcium, the accepted need is about 1GM a day. That makes it one of the MOST necessary and highest dosed micronutrients. Whatever the milk, at least from mammals, it seems calcium is a big part.

And magnesium, for an adult should be about 400MG.

When they say it is bad for you, I wonder if they are excluding the lactose intolerant, and counting the benefits.

Of course a LOT of things have calcium and magnesium. It IS possible to get it through a number of vegetables.
