The best part of that video is when the elephant gets in the water and turns around to go after the lions. I can hear the lions thinking "Oh crap we have a badass here".

It was a touching video. But what I think the lions were thinking was "That's right, come back after us. Come out of the water, where we have the advantage"

If the elephant wasn't smart enough to figure out to go into the water, it would have died.

Some animals can be SO STUPID! The lions should give the calf at least a LITTLE respect! From what I have heard about elephants loyalty, respect for family, and communication ablity, those lions should be AFRAID! I mean SURE the calf could take in a lot of water and spray them, possibly get them into deeper water and drown them, and possibly STEP on them!

But the elephant COULD have sent a signal, that the lions may not even have been able to hear(They can send ultra low sound that the elephants can feel far away, but it isn't really audible to others), and the HERD could come back to get the calf! Could you imagine a couple dozen elephants running in and not caring about the lions?

And YEAH, they might not hurt ANY lions, but the idea that the lions couldn't get anything out of it would probably get the lions to just run away and try an easier pray.

And did you get a load of how much trouble the lions had!?!?!?!? They tried to claw him, bite him, surround him, and even gang up to weigh him down!

I'm sure the lions appreciate your opinion on their hunting skills...but a few years ago I watched a documentary about a lion pride that specialized in hunting elephants.

It was a very large pride, something like 25-30 lions. They would seperate a young elephant from its mother. Then they basically took turns gnawing at the elephant and jumping on its back until they wore it down, it tired and fell. Once on the ground, the elephant was done for. One lion would clamp down on the elephant's trunk, suffocating it, while the others kept it down.

Despite your claims that the lions were "so stupid", hunting a baby elephant has little risk for the lions, unlike hunting other animals. Even though the baby elephant was pretty tough, it posed little risk for the lions. And it would have been a big meal for a big pride of lions.

This video showed 14 lionesses, which is a pretty large pride itself. There's likely a few other lionesses watching after the cubs etc, plus a couple of male lions, that weren't part of the hunt. I'm guessing a large pride like this has experience hunting young elephants.

Do you longer-time members remember a video posted here in the OT in which a lion, or maybe two, attacked a cape buffalo and another buffalo came to its rescue? That was really cool the way the second buffalo charged and tossed a lion like it was nothing.

      Ken,
I think you might be talking about this one. Pretty remarkable video which probably most of you have seen.
I could watch it over and over again , though

      Hey Ken,

I remember. I also remember letting you know I posted the same video a few days before...

But seasoned thinks hunting a cape buffalo is safer than hunting a baby elephant.

I didn't say it was SAFER. I said easier. Of course lions like to ambush in packs, and they are probably more likely, in such a case, to injure one of those buffalos enough to have a chance, than an elephant. But that buffalo knew about, and was facing that lion. I saw that video before, and thought I had responded there, though maybe things were deleted or something because I thought there were more messages there. And I was thinking about making a joke about that buffalo's poor attempt to juggle that lion, because he kept dropping the lion, but I guess I won't.

Oh yes, I remember the 'reminder' now.

I hate seeing anything get hurt, especially animals and children. I have to remind myself, regarding animals, that it's nature and well, it's what they need to do.

Some years ago I saw a documentary about a lion pride. A younger male challenged the current dominant male in the pride, beat him and then assumed command. There were existing lion cubs. The new male wanted to mate and produce his line of cubs, but the females would not let him mate with them.

So, the smart new lion simply killed the cubs, thus compelling the females to mate with him. They filmed the male killing the cubs. I couldn't watch it. Nature is a brutal thing.

I agree with you, Ken, 100%!

What I've been able to do to at least accept it, not like it in the least bit, but except it, is remember that "survival of the fittest" has a very important purpose. It's to ensure that the best of the line survive to keep them going so as to prevent extinction. It would be a terrible thing to lose either lions or elephants or both to extinction.

And if you ask me, the worst predator of all is man! Sad, but true. Hunting and only taking what is needed for survival as our ancestors did is one thing. But alas, that's not the way of it today.

Steve - I'm sure that hungry predators are going to go after food without reasoning out what might happen if they do so. They're pretty good at scattering in a pinch. I'm sure that with as many as there were, they thought they were going to have dinner.

I bet that little one stays closer to mommy for awhile after this scare.

Nature is rough. It's hard to know who to feel bad for sometimes........the prey that got killed or the predators who are starving. Someone has to bite dirt. I hope there's a great punchline across the divide because over here, it's not funny.

Yeah, they may ALL be more careful. And YEAH, I often wish I could believe religion more because *****TRADITIONAL***** teaching in Judeo christian thought DOES talk of a great punchline.
