I wish I could say that was rare, but I have seen this before myself:

Begging can be a lucrative career. No doubt about that. Ufortunately, there will always be con artists. I don't think we'll ever see a day that there isn't at least a few around.

I've actually seen this woman several times in San Diego. She once asked me for money to feed her son and I said I could not help her. I never give money to those with their hand outs. I worked at a drug and alcohol rehab for years and learned some serious lessons.

A few years ago they arrested a guy in my neck of the woods for throwing a bottle at a passing car. Bad move on his part because there were undercover police officers in that car. Well, it turned out this "homeless" guy was raking in about $200 to $300 a day at this busy freeway off ramp.

And to boot, he lived in a very nice home.

How did this all come out?

Well, the idiot ran back to his home when he saw the car come back for him and he ran into his house.

The saddest part is, is that it hurts those that really need help the most.

When I was younger I made the decision that it was better to help someone that didnt' need it and be conned, than to pass up someone that really needed help.

A good test is to buy them a burger or sandwhich, and not give them money. A truly needy person will greatly appreciate the food. A professional panhandler won't.

Years ago when I drove a taxi, I remember during the night shift, while parking on a specific city rank, there was a young girl...maybe 16-18 years old, wearing an average looking outfit but certainly not in shabby clothing. She went from driver to driver asking for money. I sat on that rank and a few others further down the same street and I saw her a few times in the one night collecting so she could have easily made $500+ and that was ONE night.

I don't know what her situation was but, if you consider she was targeting a mainly male industry, I am sure she would have made lots of money in the long term.
