I need some new comedians to listen to and don't know many of them. I've listened to the main guys - but don't know the lesser known really funny people. Any clues for me on a good comedian that might have a couple longer running videos - hour or so?

Bill Bailey is not only good for a laugh, he's a pretty talented musician as well.

Plenty of his stuff on YouTube, but here's a sample:

Lee Evans or even Michael McIntyre are two I would recommend if you have not already checked these out.

Jeff Dunham is another or even Gabriel Iglesias hope these help!

Gabriel Inglesias is a great story teller and doesn't have any blue humor. From an artisctic point of view, I think it's much harder to be funny and clean.

Ron White is also a great story teller, but a little more "blue" than Inglesias.

Lisa Lampanelli and Carlos Mencia are great at insult humor, and both have a good heart, so they make the insults fun.

What type of comedy floats your boat? Who do you find funny? Who do you not find funny?

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

Good point. Plenty of rather different brands of humour. Some I don't like at all, some I find mildly funny and other things make me need the toilet.

Precisely. I could rattle off dozens of names, but many would probably be a waste of Sal's time. I'll watch anybody, but stand-up is my favorite art form. I love watching how a comedian's mind works. However, I need more data before I can give Sal a recommendation.

So far I haven't heard of anyone mentioned, so have some to watch. I'm pretty open about humor. I like a pretty off the wall mix. One I don't like is Andrew Dice Clay - he spouts a lot of obscene garbage thinking that it's funny solely on the basis of being obscene. I don't mind obscene - but it has to have a punchline with it, it's not it's own punchline.

I've just been out of the loop for a long time and just wondering who everyone else finds funny to watch them. I like a lot of a mix and I've seen a few lately that I'd never heard of and thought it was time to start watching some comedy again.

I like all the old timers from Jack Benny, Heddy Youngman, George Burns, Newhart etc - then the later guys like George Carlin, Sam Kinison, George Wright, Ellen Degenerous.

The ones I've seen lately included Lous CK, Ralphie May, Liked them. Never did like Seinfeld.

I'm not real fussy about comedians. There are a few I've listened to for a few minutes and then tuned out but most of them I enjoy at least a little bit. Just wondering who everyone else finds hilarious for ideas of who to watch.

Hmm.... I was originally going to suggest Kevin Hart, but I'm not sure if you would like him after reading the sort of stuff you like.

Kevin is hilarious, but you have to have a sort of darker/twisted sense of humor.

HEYYYYYYYY WTG - Absolutely fantastic - and you?

I can take a look at Kevin. My tastes range quite a bit. I just don't think obscenity is funny in its own right - you have to have a punchline or story to go with it. AD Clay never does. He just thinks it's funny solely on the merit that it's obscene - although I will say he had one or two lines that made me laugh.

I'm kinda amazed that there are so many listed here I haven't heard of before. I'm glad I started the thread. It's going to keep me entertained for a little while.

          Doing great!

Kevin Hart can be obscene, but there is ALWAYS a punchline to his acts.

I'm in tears from laughter by the end of the show, every. single. time.

Definitely worth giving him a try. You'll probably be skeptical at first, but just stick with it for at least one show

Greg Giraldo was one of my favorites. Unfortunately, he od'd in 2010.

If you can stomach Dice Clay, Doug Stanhope is about as obscene as they get. He's not particularly funny, but if you're in the mood for obscene, he's your guy.

Dave Attell is obscene, but also keenly funny.

Jim Jefferies is new(er), not obscene per se, but definitely adult oriented. A hard R rating. Has several specials on Net Flix. Australian accent, if you're so inclined.

Amy Schumer has grown on me. I typically don't care for female comics. I can only listen to so many jokes about shoes and purses. Most of Amy's jokes are about her crotch.

My wife and I both like Rachel Feinstein, which is rare for us to overlap on a comic. She's funniest when riffing on her mother. The cleanest comic I've mentioned so far.

Josh Blue is unique and worth a watch.

Chris Porter is funny and likes the weed. You'll have something in common from the start.

Carlos Mencia used to be funny, but he was probably telling somebody else's jokes.

Ron White, but I have to assume you've seen his stuff.

Iliza Shlesinger - my wife thinks she's funny. I like looking at her.

John Caparulo is a clean(ish) blue collar comic...from Cleveland. Self-deprecating humor.

Gary Gulman is funny...if you like jokes about cookies.

I know I'm missing a couple great ones that just aren't popping...I'll update as they come. This should give you a start.

    Sal,

Although it is mostly the stupid kind of comedy(then again it is today ALSO, it seems), there are things like abbot and costello, laurel and hardy, and ma and pa kettle. In the 1980s, when they spoke of a new show called "mr belvedere", I thought FINALLY!!!!!! I ALWAYS wanted that kind of humor. Unfortunately, it was basically like a SPOOF of what I wanted. Wikipedia even says they were both based on the same character in the same book. YEAH RIGHT. I wanted the character Clifton Webb played HERE:
ANYWAY, it looks like he played the character in only three films.

Steve - I'm looking for stand-up, not movies. I don't really "watch". I like comedy but am usually doing something else that requires my visual attention while I have the videos playing so stand up comedy is perfect. Just looking for new ideas about who other people find really funny. When I do searches, I get the same results over and over and know I'm missing a lot of really funny lesser known comics.

Yeah, I don't see many standups in that role. MOST I have seen lately WERE vulgar. I didn't see them because they were vulgar or whatever, only because they were on. They seem to think it makes them fit with their audience better, or makes the jokes funnier, though most of them talk like that normally.

      C'est la vie!

Okay people. I'm still waiting to get a thanks button back so I can thank everyone here.

Dan - AD Clay is a pig. He thinks obscene is funny in it's own right. I'm kinda beyond potty humor. I've heard some obscene comedians that were hilarious, on the other hand. I'm not a prude, I just like a point to the obscenity.

Thanks everyone - I've got a good list here to listen to while I'm working on my winter crafts. Summer is over so the rock collecting is done for a season. Now I'll just be making things and thinking how much fun I'll have again when the snow clears! And I have this list to keep me entertained while I work.

Joe - I've seen Dunham. He's pretty funny. I love some of his puppet ideas.

Alister - just watched that tape. Guy's funny, but very hard to listen to. I have one eardrum and he's got the accent from hell. LOL. I was able to understand enough to be entertained.

Going to watch the other videos you posted here then start down the list.

Louis CK is one of my favorites

I saw a special with Anthony Jeselnik, and thought it was brilliant.

To me, stand up is about the highest form of art.

      Mitch Hedberg was incredibly funny.

Jake Johannsen is one of the funniest stand ups I've ever seen.

      Wendy Liebman is very good.

First of all, the very fact that you have already tried Whitney Cummings, is enough for me to swear her off. Remember the Jessica Biel debacle.

And you call it the "comedic sweet spot" because women laugh when you tickle it. I'm sure you are used to the laughing...but I bet the "pointing, while they laugh" bothers you.

I didn't say I didn't care for Greg - he just didn't make it to a favorites list. My favorites list includes George Carlin, Steven Wright, Sam Kinneson, and as of now Josh Blue. Lewis CK is right under those listed. Henny Youngman and George Burns would probably still be there if they were alive to make new material - Afraid sooner or later Wright, Carlin, and Kinneson are going down the list, too, for the same reason. You can only listen to humor material so many times before it just becomes obsolete.

So far, of the living and still working in stand up, J Blue and Lewis CK are the best I've heard. I'm checking out this Jake Johannsen vid that Claude posted when I get home - I watched a few minutes of it and it seems it might be a winner, too.

Semantics. I was just using your two replies as a barometer for future recommendations. No harm. No foul.

Jake Johannsen (or however he spells his last name) was funny in his day. I'm not sure if his older material holds up, but I haven't watched him in years. I can remember him cracking me up in the early 90's. He has a bit of a nervous delivery that he uses well.

Exactly why I need new material. Comedians don't seem to have much better runs than a lot of my favorite rock stars.

So, wait. It sounds like Whatevs and Frank are saying that most Brit comedians aren't crossdressers. I'm confused. Is this actually true?

It's not the comedians, it's that most Brits are crossdressers. After all, their national anthem is God Save The Queen.

Dan, I can see how a non Brit might get confused, but not every man who wears women's clothing is a crossdresser. In Britain, there are at least three very distinct classes of male crossdressing.

      1) Transvestites (e.g. Eddie Izzard)
      2) Female Impersonators (e.g. Other Comedians)
      3) Scots

Let this be your cultural lesson for today.

I just watched Kurt's clip of Eddy Izzard - this guy's funny, too. Can't tell from a two minute clip what the cross dressing was about but am going to go find more from him.

One thing that's hard for me about foreign comedians is that my hearing restriction makes it hard to cut through some accents - put that with poor sound quality on some videos, and I just give up on some of them. Eddie is coming though nice and clear so I can actually hear what he's saying.

Benny Hill (now deceased) was gay. I'm not joking either.

Ironic, with all those hot ladies in his show that he was not the slightest bit interested.

Eddie Izzard is a guy that likes to dress like a woman. It does take a little getting used to, at least for me. He says he's not gay. He had a role in an American TV show, can't remember which one, but he doesn't cross dress in the show. I believe he was Britain's most popular comedian for a while???

My favorite stand up right now is probably Carlos Mencia. Despite the claims he stole jokes, I watched a couple he was accused of stealing and other than the topic being the same, I didn't see where the jokes were the same.

He's very politically incorrect and insults every race equally. I would bet he has the most diverse audience of any comedian. People of all races go to his show hoping he'll insult them.

Here's some stuff from "Not for those easily offended" about education, and if you are easily offended, don't watch.

Just watched some Tim Minchin. Thanks Frank - he's fun.

BTW - I used to watch Benny Hill. Didn't know he's dead. It's been a long time since I've owned a TV.

I don't know his routines. I watched a few Youtube videos that showed the original comedians do their act, and then the Mencia versions (in the same video). Very direct stealing of material. He's also been called out by other comedians.

Joe Rogan did a show about it.

Want to hear something funny? I watched the second 300 movie. And they took a speech almost word for word from a famous speech by Vince Lombardi.

"I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious."

They changed two or three words.

Claude, I don't know if you're aware or not, but 300 and the sequel took place hundreds of years before Lombardi was even born. Vince must have stolen the speech from them!

Here are a few comedians who are well known by comedy fans and considered some of the most talented in the current scene, but they are not super famous so you may not know their stuff.

Maria Bamford. Quirky, lot of voices, characters, stories, etc. Talks about her mom, family, mental health issues.

Kyle Kinane. Very hot name right now. Recently opened for Patton Oswalt on his stand-up tour.

Tig Nataro. Best use of the long pause since Jack Benny. Low key but with great timing.

As you can tell from these acts, many of today's comedians have moved away from a straight set-up - punchline format.

If you prefer good old punchlines, by suggestion of nickto21 in his post below, here is Mitch Hedberg (sadly passed away):
