That was lovely. The picture of the dog holding out it's paw made me think of a dog I used to have (she's seldom too far from my mind anyway) who would give you her paw if you asked her.

She had puppies once and one of them was sitting so sweetly next to my daughter, who was a toddler at the time, that I decided to take a picture. My dog stood beside me until it was taken, and then went and gave her puppy a huge nudge out of the way, sat down in the vacant space and stared pointedly at me and the camera. Of course she got her picture taken too, but I was absolutely gobsmacked by that incident and have tried not to underestimate animals since.

This is exactly the kind of story I needed this morning.

When a dog takes command of your heart, you are hopeless to fight it. It's funny how they show up in our lives just at the right time.

Kinda funny to me that science is just now catching up to what some of us already knew. I think they're missing out on the "guilt", though. In teaching dogs to understand language (as opposed to obedience training), I've found they have complex cognitive abilities. They show, maybe not remorse, but that they know full well when they do something they aren't supposed to.
