Of course it's a "no no".

But in my opinion putting your arm around a woman you've just met when her husband is standing next to her - is bad manners to begin with.

Royalty aside - it's an interesting point that a man feels it's ok to touch a woman just because he's bigger and male.

Kay's exactly right. Regardless of protocol, the act of putting your arms around a stranger in a social situation is generally one of dominance - usually subconscious.

And it's not always male over female. When the current coalition government in the UK was first voted in, it was comical watching the two (male) party-leaders jostle for perceived dominance by attempting to casually lay guiding hands on the other when the cameras were rolling.

Indeed. I remember it well. On the steps going into number 10? Was very entertaining!

    Pfffttt!!!

Back in 1993, then Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating "touched up" the Queen.

OFF TOPIC BTW: For those who understand the Westminster style of government, check out some of the many videos on YouTube where Keating rips into the Opposition during Question Time. Funny as.

He was so entertaining that people actually used to watch QT!

I just took a look at the shocking photo.

Have any of you guys ever hugged a woman, because you just liked her? Or you were just getting along really well?

Sometimes a hug is just a hug.

And it was really just an arm across the shoulder......

I can't believe I just spent ten seconds typing about this non-issue.

Your definition and the penal system's definition of "hug" are drastically different, hence the restraining orders.

Thats not even close to being a hug. I do think its a bit off given the whole thing about royalty but its not uncouth generally. What you have to remember is that Lebron and other famous athletes take pictures all the time with that pose. Its automatic

Has absolutely nothing with being bigger or anything. its reflex for how such pictures are taken.
Those of you claiming its a sign of dominance need to get out more

As usual the Brits get a bit bent of shape over everything. She was twirling her hair a few weeks ago and they were upset. I thought it was adorable and down to earth.

Ridiculous comment for reason stated above. You can't whine against the observation or call it crass stereotyping if its your own press reporting it. Well..I mean you can but not logically.

DEAL!! then my point stands since yes when our media reports something to the rest of the world I blame OUR media not the rest of the world that heard it. Meanwhile its hardly defining or you just don't understand what DEFINING is.

What a bizarre coincidence that the same UK media outlets that get outraged over incidents like this are also the same ones that publish every bit of royal scandal (and non-scandal) they can, even as far as hacking into their phones.

Again for those of you who don't know, these poses are pretty standard for sports figures with fans. I will grant that its a violation of royal protocol but all the psycho babble about sub conscious dominance etc is over the top. Most fans particularly NBA fans like that kind of pose that relates friendship (as opposed to just standing besides like a forced setup) so those who do it a lot do it pretty much as force of habit.

Not exactly true. In the case of the Kardashians its more about Rump and Circumstances.

Rump I think being a word our British posters are more familiar with.

I'm afraid it doesn't really matter what you think about the Royals, like it doesn't matter what I think about guns in America. Or Twinkies.

                    Hi Mike,

I wasn't aware of the hair twirling moment, I didn't see it in the press either. I read about Lebron meeting them and saw the picture this morning. I had to rely on you to tell me that the newspaper is saying we're all bent out of shape though. The paper I was reading didn't mention protocol.

I hope I can unbend at some point. It's getting hard to walk.

So all the 'Brits' are getting bent out of shape because you read about it in a foreign newspaper in America?

Believe me Mike, no-one outside the Royal family apart from those who are seriously close to the Royals or people who have pictures of them all over their house probably even remembered it was protocol and even if they did, they probably think it's a bit of a silly protocol anyway.

You're quite right. I was only having fun. It is the press that does this, I looked up a few places that mentioned it and most were reporting one lady from some manners society I'd never heard of, saying it was against protocol and lots of other stuff/nonsense.

No - I disagree on this one. It's an old style mannerism from a time when men protected/guided/controlled women. Between friends, neighbors, family ...it's fine. With strangers, new acquaintances, business contacts....it's not acceptable.

I used to run into this a lot when I was in outside sales. I sold mainly to male CEO's and dept heads and it was surprising how many assumed as a female I wouldn't mind being hugged or having someone's arm around me or a hand on my back.

Initially, I was polite and tolerated it....later I'd just freeze them out with a look and an "exCUSE me?"

To you it's a non-issue. To many women it would be offensive. I don't care to be "hugged" or someone's armed wrapped around me unless we already have that level of familiarity in our relationship. To tell you the truth, I don't like it when a woman does it either. I'm a "I like my own space, thank you" person.

Absence of malice is a big consideration. However, everybody should learn that Royal protocol or not,
everybody has their limits and life experiences.

I used to do what were to me friendly put downs until I noticed the look on a customers face.
I had known her a few months and she was a bank president. I don't recall what I said, but I'm sure it was very light and definitely un-crude... I figured that perhaps in her past she had been in an abusive relationship, so I stopped that kind of humor - unless it's clear that kind of atmosphere is ok.

My Dad was the kind who demanded hugs from daughters and other relatives. To this day, neither
sister, except with their spouses, is a very huggy person - even in a grieving kind of situation. I have to really like someone before I feel comfortable letting them into my bubble and can't stand employees nearby while I'm working at the computer.

The royals and their protocols can be quite strange IMHO.

I remember seeing a clip of the Queen coming back from an oversees trip and only shaking a very young Charles' hand when they greeted each other at the airport.

But protocol is protocol and the advance man for the royals should have informed Lebron of the protocol before he was led to meet with the royals. I doubt its a big deal with the too young royals.

The British media also tried to make a big deal about the FLOTUS touching the Queen on the back but the Queen quickly shot it down and the media backed off.

It's no big deal, it's much ado about nothing. The royal family is paraded around like a touring museum. The prince is nothing more than a title.

We have no prince here in the U.S, so you have to forgive us when we do something evil like shake the hand of royalty, or give them a pat on the back

I can understand why some people in England would be offended, but they were in the U.S and nobody here is to good for a handshake or pat on the back. Most of us don't even know that we are not allowed to touch English royalty

Having a royal family is nice and all, but I'd be more impressed if they were feeding the poor or something, not traveling the world giving fake smiles and waves.

I'm pretty sure neither one of them ever watched and NBA game, they were just there for show. I almost feel sorry for them, because I'm sure they rather live a private life, than be paraded around like a traveling circus.

oh my goodness - people need to chill out! - it seems it doesn't take much to get people upset these days -

I don't care about so-called protocol - the Royals are human just like you and me - and I seriously doubt Lebron meant any harm -

if I met some of you folks down here in OT with whom I have had the pleasure of interacting with since 2008 - I would probably hug you - that doesn't mean I'm aggressive and mean anything other than showing you my love and affection - that's just who and how I am -

Some people don't have much idea about what the monarchy is about which is fine. The modern monarchy are about keeping good relations with other nations, promoting Britain, representing our history, traditions, etc. People can say whatever they like about they do no good or being outdated whatever, but that's just complete rubbish.

Fact is people like to see all the pomp and ceremony. I like to see it. It reminds me of how lucky I am to be an Englishman. I can't explain how it feels to be English and what exactly being English and the Queen means to some of us but the chap at 39.40 in the video below gives some sort of idea at least after being awarded an MBE by her, or at least the medal it represents to be specific.

Of course not, you won't even hear a peep from anyone. Now if a first lady shoved someone's hand away as if her poop don't stink, then there would be a big fuss about it.

That's why people loved Princess Diana, she refused to be paraded around like a mantel piece, she was a human being first.

I imagine the royal family are tired of being treated like a show piece. I'm pretty sure they rather be on their own land hunting/fishing than to be paraded around the world. When people take photo's they usually embrace in some sort of way, if they don't then the pictures come out looking awkward.

See my post earlier in this thread about Paul Keating. You can imagine how apeshit the British tabloids went over that incident.

First off, it was a man with his arm around the Queen, and secondly, he's an Australian.

Crikey, I didn't even know that Suzanne. It was in a New York paper so it must be true, Brits go mad. Right. Where are the images of these people going 'mad'?

Sorry but that article is crap.

Nearly the entire nation simultaneously snarfed their English Breakfast.
Cracking stereotype, I can't remember the last time I had one. Hardly convenient to cook each morning before work.

By the way, the Queen touched her first...That's what the article is about.

"There was a bit of a bottleneck as all of the leaders filed out so the Queen started chatting to Michelle Obama. She appeared to look up at her and make a comment about how tall she was. As she did, she put her arm around Mrs Obama and rested her gloved hand on the small of her back. Almost simultaneously, Mrs Obama put her arm around the Queen's shoulders rather more firmly. The pair then looked at their feet and appeared to be discussing their shoes. The Queen then dropped her arm and, a few seconds later, Michelle did the same. The entire exchange lasted around eight to ten seconds but was absolutely extraordinary.
It is believed to be the first time in the 57 years of her reign that Elizabeth of England has ever performed such a gesture. It is against protocol to touch the Queen unless she touches you first.
So the Queen broke protocol. Probably because she thinks it's out dated too.

Below is everything in the article that's proof we all went mad.

            Headline...

Michelle Obama Partially Embraces Queen, Brits Go a Bit Mad
            One other sentence...

Nearly the entire nation simultaneously snarfed their English Breakfast.
So that must be true, the paper said so. Thank you for a genuine laugh.

Ah, someone that can separate the press from the entire British public.

            Thank you.

EDIT. Suzanne, I'm not saying you think all Brits went mad from that article, we all know the author wasn't simultaneously at almost the entire nations breakfast tables when it happened.

Speaking of the royals and nobles, are there still big class divisions in the UK - based on birth?

I heard a few years ago that it was pretty thick and pervades every aspect of the society.

I remember the head butler guy from Upstairs Downstairs often saying...

'I know my station in life".

I think so yes. If I was born to a wealthy family that sent me to a private school where you're very likely to get into a prestigious Uni I'd say your chances of getting a good job and rising up the ladder fast are higher than most.

I heard a few years ago that it was pretty thick and pervades every aspect of the society.
That depends who you speak to. I was brought up on a council estate with a single Mum at the time. The school I went to didn't turn out the most desirable types but it hasn't stopped me doing fairly well. Certainly not rich but better than a lot of people I went to school with. Had I got a degree I may have got a good job somewhere, not that I'd want to change anything.

I think anyone here can achieve a decent life if they want to. The trouble is many don't. There are too many people on benefits, entire communities that have never worked and their kids won't work either but they complain about their lot. For tax payers that's a bit rich as they struggle to make ends meet while those on benefits whinge about it

Of course U.S. isn't perfect and I know you folks no longer have the "Right Of The First Night" but what's the deal over there?
Prima nocta was a bit before my time chap. I don't really know what the deal is over here. It's complicated now. We have people that came over in the fifties that have worked very hard to achieve a good life. Now people come here so they don't have to work. I personally don't think it's the class division that's the main problem, it's the entitlement culture and the wish to be supported by others that is destroying this place and I don't for one second think this island has ever been anywhere near perfect.
