Sal Need Help With Gastroenteritis

Sal, I know you're the health guru here but anyone else who has a cure is welcome to chime in.

Short and to the point. I caught gastroenteritis from my wife. I'm going on day 7 now. I don't want to take meds like Imodium AD to stop this because I read it just makes the infection hang on longer.

What can I do to get rid of this? Web MD says it can take up to 10 days. I don't know if I can last another 4 days.

Help!

Eew, sorry to hear it Steve. Little else to say, here, except that I think you're right not to want to take Imodium, or anything similar, if you can possibly avoid it. And wishing you better quickly.

(And drink lots of water, because it's terribly dehydrating, and some of the symptoms can actually be caused/aggravated by dehydration, too.)

I do drink lots of water which I think is the only thing getting me through this.

Jeez Steve. What the heck are you people eating out there?

First off - if you have food in the house with GMO in it -- throw it away. I'm dead serious about that.

Get some pedialyte to help with your electrolytes, but you want to drink regular (non-fluoridated) water, too.

Raw organic apple cider vinegar - take a spoon a couple of times a day. It will clean mucus out of your tract and that cleans out the bacteria - will kill some of it, too.

Make a good black tea and throw some clove in it - kills bacterias like staphylococcus. Tea kills some, too. You can add some ginger to that or take a capsule of it for infection and inflammation.

Keep away from dairy until it is gone.

Take a half spoon of fennel seeds to relieve the inflammation, too.

Get some peppermint down ya to stop the growth of listeria and slamonella and a few other bacterias (this type of infection is sometimes actually food poisoning - but whatever bacteria you have - it won't like peppermint.

Lower intake of vitamin C (but only for a day or two) as that can make intestines loose in high doses and you kinda need to avoid that at the moment. You can eat an orange or green pepper, but don't take a supplement - use a high level of Vit D3 instead - (10,000 - 30,000 iu if you can't get any sun to sit in. If you can get out in the sun, even if just your face neck and hands - do so.

You seem to be having a few health issues out there - you should work on strengthening your immune system as soon as you recover from this.

Thanks Sal. No GMO here and I don't eat dairy as I am lactose intolerant. I used to have peppermint a lot but I think it softened my esophagus enough to be at least a partial cause of my acid reflux. I haven't had any peppermint now for 4 years so I am better but do sometimes have a bout of it.

My current condition is relatively mild. Only 2 or 3 trips a day to the bathroom. Just not solid. Today has been a pretty good day (day 7) so I think I am at the tail end of it. I just wonder how the hell I got this to begin with as I haven't had this particular problem since I was a kid. This is very unusual for me as I tend to have the opposite problem (not going enough) though that has been under control the last 4 years when I changed my diet.

I'll go over the list you gave me. Is 2,000 units of vitamin C still too much because that's what I take daily.

2,000 mg's of C is enough to cause stool loosening on its own. Stop for 48 hours completely - then start it back at a dose of only 500 mg in the morning and at night - 1000 for a 24 hour period. That's enough for your body to function on. Anything more and you risk diarrhea and also kidney problems. 2,000 mg is for when you actually have caught something and need to clean it out of your system.

Oh my. I've been on 2,000 a day for years. That's probably why I almost never get sick. Okay, I'll cut down to 1,000 a day and stop for 48 hours starting tomorrow.

By chance have you changed brands of anything lately - especially the Vitamin C because as mentioned it can make the intestines loosen? (different brand or source/type of Vitamin C)
The body does get used to certain things and has to adjust to new.

Dan, been taking the same vitamin C for 4 years, In fact, I've been on the exact same diet for 4 years. I have no choice because there is so much stuff I can't eat. So I have to stick to the few foods that I can eat. That's why I am having such a hard time understanding why this has hit me now having not suffered with this since I was a kid. It has to be a good 45 years.

You can use magnesium ascorbate (vitamin C) to supplement some of the vitamin c you are taking - ascorbic acid is not the only form of C. Magnesium acorbate helps other things besides those that ascorbic acid does, too. For instance - melt it down in water and rub it over your skin - leave sit for at least a half hour before washing off. Excellent!

Still and again - too much might cause loosening intestines. That's when you know for sure you have had more than enough C. I would say if you are taking that much C - you should supplement part of that C with sunshine. Not D supplement - but sunshine. (Lizard light if there's no sun for days, weeks, months). Sunshine not only gives you the D you need, it also produces a sulfur compound that disease, bacteria, fungus, and viruses absolutely hate -- it's so strong it kills cancer cells. Serious.

Balance, when healthy is the key. The only time we need to really soak in extra anything is once we are already getting sick. Sunshine is a daily necessity. Period, though - still in balance enough not to burn. 15 to 20 minutes a day is sufficient to produce both D and the sulfur.
