BBC News - Methane 'belches' detected on Mars

Some enterprising bunny opened an Indian restaurant there I expect.

I have to hand it to the creative genius who came up with the phrase "methane belches".

    ROFL.

What a pity they still smell like farts though.

Why do garden gnomes smell so bad?
So that blind people can hate them as well.

Gee, fluffy bunnies can't have a Chilli Eating contest nearby without Curiosity sticking its electronic nose in!

But, yeah, organics in the rocks and methane,...finally we are getting something!

So much for the Mars is a rock with a barely noticeable atmosphere!

Methane eh, maybe it is the green stuff on all the rocks?

Need to rewrite my "Told You So" speech!

I saw an article about seasonal running water the other day, too, Shawn. I thought of you then got side tracked and don't know where it went.

It did say the water would not be drinkable for humans since it would have a far too high sulfuric content, but it's H2O based water. It runs during the first part of summer when the ice is melting, so those dry creek beds might actually be creeks in late spring - however, I'm not sure from the article if there is enough to actually fill them. Seems like if it shows in fingers running downhill, there should be enough to do so.

      Shawn?

I am going to take a stab in the dark, and hope that you mean me, (Shane)?

Thankyou Sal, post it here if you find it, there are a few hard nosed skeptics that need to be dislodged from the Mars is lifeless crap, or doesn't have liquid water on the surface!

And don't take too long, l have found credible articles like that don't last long, especially if NASA posted it!

High surphuric acid, eh, microbes thrive in those environments on Earth near volcanic activity!

It looks like Martian rivers, streams, etc are valid!

PS pity l couldn't find something else on Mars, it has been a bit of a dead end of late!

Yeah, I meant Shane. Not sure how your name morphed on me. LOL.
There are bacteria and such all over earth that do and eat incredible things. They've found plastic eating bacteria here that may be able to be used to take care of that plastic continent we're building in the Atlantic. A lot of people don't realize, either, that bacteria are responsible for turning ore into gem quality gold.

If there's water up there, and methane, there's more than likely at least bacteria alive. We have bacteria that became encased in salts and is dormant but still alive after a million years. So - what if something killed most of Mars (probably the lack of plate tectonics, which recycle crust and make for a self-replenishing atmostphere), and the bacteria survived? If they find a way to make a self sustaining atmosphere, they might be able to get the planet to hold life again.

The methane can be of geological (i.e. rather than biological) origins, hello ...

I'm going to laminate a copy of this post, and put it on my office wall. Made my day.

By the way, I know the professor didn't really leave that review. "Thought provoking" was the giveaway.

No, that is the abbreviated version, here is the full one!

"Thought provoking read. That Joe just isn't funny and he's bald, and lives in America and doesn't talk to his cat!"

Astronomers were looking at the wrong planet. They thought the methane was belching from Mars...but it was actually.......... Uranus.

(I heard that on The Colbert Report. I sure wish I would have thought off it)

That methane means one of two things. 1. biological life 2. Geologically live planet. Either way it's quite a surprise and has some broad implications, so those sudden spikes were really startling either way.

Jeez, Dan - you write a book on a subject, subtracting the one interest value of that subject? Is your next book "how NOT to build a product"?
