The technology now appears to be pretty much in place, and the company behind it already have $50m in funding from some major players

I've just been witness to what feels like a modern-day technological miracle. A Samsung smartphone has just been recharged from being nearly out-of-juice to full capacity in less time than it takes to boil a kettle.
It could also totally revolutionise the automotive industry and will have petrol behemoths sleeping a little uneasy at night.

But Storedot has a bigger plan. "We are just starting to work on electric vehicles," says Mr Myersdorf, "And we intend to show in one year a model of a car that can charge in three minutes.

"We are 100% sure we can deliver, because the knowhow of how you take one cell and combine thousands of them together has already been done by Tesla.

It's certainly not going to boost the oil price.

So that blind people can hate them as well.

They HAVE done things along these lines for YEARS. It has often been impractical for use for several reasons. THIS seems to not really be any different!

It's not something that can be retrofitted to existing devices, since most phones would be fried by the 40 amps of electricity the current version of the charger supplies.

It also involves using a completely new type of battery, which contains specially synthesised organic molecules.

"We have reactions in the battery that are non-traditional reactions that allow us to charge very fast, moving ions from an anode to a cathode at a speed that was not possible before we had these materials," explains Doron Myersdorf, the company's chief executive.

Storedot has a 2017 goal of matching the energy density - the amount of energy stored per kilogram - of its own batteries and the lithium-ion ones commonly found in existing handsets.

The firm's prototypes currently deliver about a third of that rate, meaning the normal-sized handset used in the demo only held 900mAh of juice, and would have to be recharged several times a day were it deployed now albeit only taking two minutes to do so each time.
HEY, there are fast chargers that charge faster because they are like 2 or 5 times the amperage, and THIS one is 40 times the most common amperage!!!!! But *****THAT***** is for a lowly cell phone. For a car, that 40 amps may be VERY low. Anyway, this requires changes in the battery that might affect lower power devices and WILL affect cars. When I was a little kid, they were talking about maybe using lithium. They wanted to use it for electric cars. It was DECADES before I saw a lithium battery. They developed NiCad, and nimh, and even lipo(OK, it was lithium, but still not up to this sort of thing), before the current lithium-ion. Somehow they thought lithium was THE answer all those decades.

ALSO, they are discussing selling the technology outright! So:

    1. It may not be applicable.
    2. Their goal is to match capability by 2017, but it is harder for cars.
    3. They may end up selling it, and it may never be available for cars.

If you ask me, they should be trying to shoot for having parity with the OLDER phones! You remember, the ones where you could talk for HOURS, and be on standby for DAYS!?!?!? And with THOSE phones, you only used them when you were talking on the phone! Yeah, I PINE for that time!
And BLACKBERRY is apparently the WORST offender! I NEVER turned my phone off on planes until I had the blackberry. WHY? Well, I went on ONE flight(about 3 hours, IIRC) with a FULLY CHARGED BB. When I got off the plane, I had so little power that I HAD to shut off that phone. MAYBE I could then call 911 if I needed to. It wasn't enough power to be sure that I could make a call. Apparently it kept trying to connect with the cell, and kept failing.
