This is the reason why you shouldn't give any alms to these people. They become dependent and lazy.

I wouldn't be so damn fast to judge the homeless. A great many of them should be cared for in mental institutions, which were basically closed down and they were let out on the streets. Veterans also make up a fair percentage of those on the streets dealing with PTSD, etc. Others are in need of a hand out and a firm hand up--sometimes whole families lose their homes and possessions due to job loss or lack of employment paying a living wage.

While I won't dispute that there are surely many who are lazy and dependent, the quick video was not an accurate picture of all that is really happening. If governments would pay more attention to solving the needs of their own people...there would be a lot fewer homeless.

Assuming they're all exactly the same.

      Which they're not.

So, someone makes a video with the intention of "proving" that homeless people are lazy, and edits it to meet that prejudice. This matches your prejudice(s) and you post it here as "proof" that your prejudices are "facts".

I sincerely hope that one day a run of bad luck doesn't befall you and you find yourself in the same boat. If it does and you whinge about it, we're just going to play you back this video on repeat mode.

Well, we're to blame for even responding to the original question, because it, as with every question of this type on almost any subject can be answered truthfully in only one way. "Some do and some don't." There's your accurate answer - plain and simple.

Well. it appears as if my work is done, here. Time to start my daily schedule of harrassing the homeless.

Yet another poorly executed "social experiment" that proves absolutely nothing. Very few people would be foolish enough to take these guys seriously considering how they approached these homeless individuals. Like the one homeless guy kept saying, "Do you have a number?" The guy had nothing.

The way they went about approaching these individuals was pathetic, and even offensive. They were pushy and didn't come across as very sincere. I doubt any of them believed either guy actually had a job to offer them. Not to mention, it's very common for individuals who've been homeless for a long time to be very guarded with strangers, especially anyone who appears to have an agenda. I'm not remotely surprised they got the results they did.

Yes, that is the rub, a homeless person won't accept a s*** job, but that is probably all they could hope to get, in their situation?

But just like in the Shawshank Redemption, getting released from prision, or off the street with the only job prospect or packing groceries or worse, won't do it!

Probably only leads to more suicide rates, although living on the street is similar, l guess?

Reminds me of "Down and Out in Beverley Hills" doesn't want a dull job, but could start up several profitable business, for the rich, if he really wanted.

We should offer them a roof, and 24 hour access to a computer with training, and we should see a marked improvement.

Yes, tried to help someone like that once, he couldn't find a job and had a lot of music songs written down, l mentioned the internet or a website, and in one ear,.....!

He went back to throwing knives and watching sport all day while smoking, (pot sometimes). Or being involved with his friends who robbed a business to get ahead, (the police came around to their place, and asked me some questions).

                  Time is a bitch!

In 7 years, he might be better at throwing knives and remember the football scores for the last 30 years, but what is that good for?

Sounds mentally ill Shane. Is it necessarily his fault he's on the streets with no medication?

                    Just asking.

He is happy now that he has a roof over his head and someone to talk to in Prison!
Yes and perhaps he'll get the help he needs.

And the Salvos did try to help him, but he refused!
Probably because he needed mental help or medication or permanent incarceration in a mental institution which he probably should have been instead of on the streets, rather than a chat with the Salvation Army.

I may be wrong too because what you told me is all I know but most normal people don't do as he did even under serious stress.

Yes, l agree, but there was no way of knowing? He went to the pub, got drunk, got thrown out at 5.30 am, (obviously tried to sleep there) and then got woken up or saw this 23 year old, attractive Asian woman walking through the park, and snapped or something?

That is another thing, about the homeless, zero chance of a relationship with an attractive woman.

That obviously doesn't condone his actions, but his only mental disorder, (as far as l could tell) was depression, disgust at himself, self pity, self loathing, and spitting the dummy over things he believed were impossible to achieve!

But others in society who kill because they were bored or wanted to know what it felt like to kill are no better!

instead of just thrown out of the pub. I worked at a bar and know that a lot of them don't like to call the
police because the owners and managers like to think they can handle things themselves, or are afraid of sanctions if they call too often.

In my opinion it sucks to be judged and it sucks to judge others. I know a wealthy 90-year-old man who I often see chatting with homeless people. I think part of his long life could be attributed to simply respecting that every individual as someone with a perspective that one can learn from. He doesn't suffer the stress that would be associated with being a pompous a-hole. I don't think this is a very representative video. How would you react to some stranger just walking up to you on the street and asking if you want a job? Are you really going to take them seriously? If you are in a town with a local Labor Ready or other daily pay staffing agency, go in there some morning and watch the place fill up. Those people all want to get out to work that day, and many of them are homeless.

It's hard to get a job without an address, phone, clean clothes, etc. The people that work the daily labor pools get paid daily so they have money to get to work the next day, eat, wash clothes, or whatever. When they get to get out to a job that runs for a couple months or hires them on full time - they go every day and it can get them off the street.

So you get a video of some dude that nobody is going to take seriously, walking around asking the homeless that are just laying around about jobs. That's a very small percent of homeless doing that. Many of the homeless are working. We have a lot of homeless in this town that work, yet can't afford the rents, which are exorbitant here.

If those guys approached me on the street that way, I'd think it was some kind of scam
and would treat them the same way the 'homeless' people treated them. They come across
like make money online sellers - push button easy to make thousands daily.

If I noticed the camera, I would not like the invasion of privacy and it would only add to
my disdain for the video makers.

Being homeless does not mean one is stupid, or any different than anybody else when it comes
to being treated with simple human dignity.

Having been homeless at the age of 17 due to my mom passing from cancer, I can personally relate to the struggles of homelessness. Contrary to believe that all or most homeless people are drug addicts, crazy, or lazy, this was not the case for me.

I graduated High School at 17 with honors, worked 80 hours week while in high school during the summer to help pay for meds for my mom who was dying from breast cancer. There was no prom, sports, or dates, and when she died I was left to fend for myself.

I ate out of garbage cans behind restaurants, and slept on park benches for over 1 year, can't get a job with no Address, so had to survive. I understand how people can assume all homeless people are in this situation by their own fault, and this video does not help the Lie and Myth.

Bottom line Don't Judge a Book by It's Cover. behind every homeless person there is a story, situation or circumstance that lead to being homeless, and with the oil prices supper low here in USA there may be more homeless people once laid off by the big oil companies due to profits shrinking.

I won't go into my story as many already know it but as has been said, there are many people on the streets who shouldn't be and are so of no fault of their own. Many good soldiers that don't fit back into society, many people with mental illnesses they can't control, many people left in a state of total bereavement they have a breakdown and many combinations of all of the above.

Only someone with no idea what it's like to be homeless, has never known a homeless person and generally is a dick head, to make out they're all the same.

Just a quick side question: where in the world was the Department of Children's Services in your case? How did you slip through the cracks?

Note: this isn't an accusatory question. I'm truly interested in how things went sideways.

Possibly an instance of you can't get help if you don't show up and ask for it.

            I've never met a 'B' movie that I didn't like:

"Minion From the Black Lagoon" was one of my favorites, but the best of all was "Citizen Minion." A classic!

I grown up in Chicago, one of the worst areas, so another lost kid is no big deal.
CPS like most Govt. programs is short staffed, underfunded, and has so many kids to place, the older ones slip through the cracks.

It is hard enough to place babies, and teens, imagine trying to place a 17 yr old, sad truth nobody wants a almost legal age 17 yr old, they want babies they can raise as there own child which is understandable.

Sounds like you might have made it out in the long run. It had to have been a lot of work and luck to get back on keel. I came so close when I split up with my ex that it was a 24 hour "save". I don't even want to know what would have happened to me if I hadn't gotten lucky at the last minute.

Most people who have never been financially unstable before don't realize exactly how little the gov is willing to do unless you fit into one of their little "groups" of those they help. There are a heck of a lot of people out there on the street that can't get help. They don't fit the agenda. If I went homeless tomorrow, I might be able to get a few food stamps, but that would be about the extent of it. Some people in here would be surprised to know they would also be out in the cold without any help if the bottom fell out.

First, you have to give it a name, other than "Manhood". It implies gender. And that hasn't been established.

I know a 20 something homeless man who lives in a DRAIN underneath a busy road. Somebody I know gave him a paid job and free accommodation in return for 5 hours work a day cleaning horses stables. After 2 days he said fu*k it and decided to move back to his drain with his sleeping bag because the work he was being made to do was "too tiring and not worth it" . The other person working that job now is 40 years older than him and and she isn't complaining..

such a crazy mindset some homeless people must be in..

Nobody wants a job, they want money, a job is only a side effect.

Seriously, when you was young did you say to yourself: I really want to be someones b*tch when I grow up?

The guy in the OP video is a moron, some of those people obviously had mental issues that would never be able to hold a legit job. The guy sitting down in the video (0:50) called the moron out & knew he was being messed with, good for him.

The guy in the red shirt in the OP video (1:48) said: You got a job or are you just talking (called him out).

Whoever created the video is a loser.

I don't think that's true at all. While everyone wants to be rewarded for their labor, many people find that the labor itself provides them with a sense of accomplishment, fulfillment and self-worth, even in the most menial types of work.

Ask any man that is out of work but is still financially stable because his significant other is bringing home the bacon. Very few would be happy sitting around on their arse doing nothing for anything resembling an extended period of time.

Some people's entire self-worth is directly related to their job. I'm not saying that's a healthy thing, but it is a reality for many people.

I work for myself, so I guess that's not a job and while I do not need the money, I certainly need to create, contribute and take pride in something.

Please... The average job in this world is brain dead boring.

How interesting do you think a $13 an hour job is (OP video)? Boring...

I have this conversation with my VA shrink, on a weekly basis. She is always wondering why I just don't sit on my dock and either fish all day or just kick back and watch the birds fly by, rather than complaining to her that my projects are driving me more crazy than I already am and that I'm putting in 12 hour days, most days.

I've lived on this lake for 18 years and have never so much as dropped a baited hook into the water and if I tried to sit back and watch the birds fly by, it would take approximately an hour before I would be forced to eat the gun.

We're all built differently. I know folks that can sit around and do nothing but watch the golf channel all day. They used to be the people that I was always lending money to, that I would never see returned. Nowadays, not so much. I don't support losers.

Work is good for you. Even $13 an hour work. If I ever run out of things to do I’ll volunteer at my local SPCA or at the VA.

I'll relax when I'm dead. Shouldn't be long, now. lol

          Cheers. - Frank
