we're only going to get around 15 centimetres of snow - apparently on Thursday -
good - it is winter after all - I can't stand the half-assed winter we get that is usually just gray and dirty here -
I love how everything looks with a fresh blanket of white snow - it looks beautiful -

so - I guess what I am saying is bring it on - snow puts people to work around here - so it's good for the economy too

Personally, I'm getting a little tired of the weather teams acting like the end of the world is coming. It's winter. It's going to snow. Maybe even a lot of snow. Big whoop!

Anybody living in NJ that's not prepared with a generator and 4 or 5 days of rations for themselves and their pets, deserve whatever befalls them through lack of planning.

Sorry for moaning, but it's ridiculous.

Frank - I feel the same way. I can't remember how many days that we didn't have to go to school when I was in High School because it snowed too heavy the night before. To parents it was a major pita - to us kids it was heaven sent. We spent those days making tunnels, snow forts, snow men and other art, and going to the local hill to toboggan. Now it's highly covered news events and just one more indication we need to pay more taxes. Right.

      those were the days!

speaking of tobogganing: they are trying to ban it here in some towns of Ontario - people are rebelling - as they should:

Well, I bawled out a store here today. I parked in my favorite area, and I tend to test traction first. IT FAILED! I THEN drove closer, tested, IT FAILED! I drove to the back, and there was like a tiny oasis. I tried it, LUCKILY it worked. The salesperson didn't care, and said they would be there to plow. ******THAT****** was the problem! If they didn't plow, it would be FINE! If they plow, they should add salt and sand. If someone succumbs to their negligence, that storecould be gone by the end of the year.

They are implying that it will only last a few hours here, but say it could snow 4-6 inches an hour. It is expected to start tomorrow. Over the last few hours, it probably snowed about 4-6 inches. On the way back from the store I spoke of, I traveled a kind of moderate traffic road. I lost full control of the car, so I turned the way to get to where I was going, and realized it was too dangerous with the traction I had, so I had to turn the other way. I ended up having to do a FULL stop to avoid a fence. I tried to back out, but couldn't, so I had to travel down a bad road and attempt a 3 point turn on a bad road with limits I could only guess at. LUCKILY, I got back on my way. Oh well, if need be, I can last a couple months. For power, I could maybe handle high power for 1.5 hours, but I haven't gotten that aspect of my backup plan yet.

I've been out shopping all day for new appliances. I missed all of that.

Was Michigan included? I hope not, they're supposed to deliver my new washer & dryer and refrigerator tomorrow.

Here in NE Ohio, we're supposed to get 3-6 inches of snow over the next several days. I assume you're safe.

I'm sure we'll get ours soon enough, though.

Hmmm....I've got mixed feelings about this. The snow will keep a lot of customers in the office, so I should be able to make some sales from that area this week. :-)

On the other hand, my credit card processor is out that way. I hope they don't end up slowing down my cash flow. That would suck. :-(

It's the high winds along with the snow that make this storm potentially a record breaker. Blizzards are not just a snow storm.

They are quickly walking back all the dire predictions for S. Jersey. I went out early this morning to get vittles for the critters and it was 31º and snowing. By the time I got home it stopped snowing and the temp was up 5º.

I'm sure that after you've been there awhile, the thrill will wear back off. Newly covered landscape is beautiful - but the endless cold that can accompany it, the need to bundle up to go out, the driving hazard, etc. gets old after awhile.

I'm so glad to be out of that town I was in for the rest of the winter. They seem to not have any idea that you are supposed to sand intersections and roads when they're sheet ice. Far to many people not really that great at driving even clear road up there to tangle with them in ice.

Seriously - I moved to Ohio to live with my son and his family....lovin' it!

This morning it's pretty and white and the back yard is full of paw prints! Enough snow to make it pretty - but the road was cleared last night so work and school were on today.

Ahhh...I remember you posting that now. I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying yourself.

Actually, I lived in Brookhaven for about a year when I was very young. I don't remember much too about it, though.

As far as the snow goes, I like to be able to go visit it rather than it coming to visit me. It tends wear out its welcome after awhile. Besides the fact that I'm allergic to it. I break out in goosebumps. :-(

WHAT HAPPENED!?!?!?!? They made it sound like today and tomorrow would be a DISASTER! ALSO, it looks like they are predicting that places like boston will get what we got yesterday. That storm was bad in the high intensity over a short time, but not nearly as bad as today was supposed to be. NOW weather.com is forecasting a 60% chance of snow on thursday here. Currently, it is sunny!

You guys are in an awful hurry for the storm. It wasn't really expected by sunrise this morning.
The greatest impacts from this storm will be from Monday evening and through Tuesday.
By Tuesday morning, this storm will become a powerful nor'easter bringing heavy snow and strong winds to much of the Northeast

YEAH, I know! It is just that the sky looks like it won't happen for a while, and weather.com says it won't happen. Of course I am talking about Indiana. On the news, they DID say that the east would get what WE got yesterday,

Well, until a couple of hours ago it was 41 with light rain here. The sky is now completely gray, the winds are picking up and it's considerably colder than it was. VA isn't on the list of states that is supposed to get much of anything, but there's been a dramatic change since this morning here.

Your profile says you are in Virginia, so YOU are right in the thick of it! It looks like YOU are getting what I got yesterday. Of course the proximity to the ocean could change things. The news says that the storm is PAST me, and will hit farther to the east, INCLUDING Virginia. I still see NOTHING that says It will hit where I am. They DID change todays forecast to 20% chance of snow today, and 70% Thursday, though.

MAN are they confused! For the DAY, 20% today, 0% Tuesday-Wed! For HOURLY, 0% today, 20% Tuesday!

As I sit and watch the coverage for the impending storm, I'm reminded of those B movies where a life-ending meteor is hurtling toward Earth. I actually saw a reporter in the Boston area say there would be 90 MPH winds. Had I been his boss, I would have fired him in an instant.

They are now calling for 3" where I'm at in S. Jersey, but not a single flake has fallen as of yet. From predictions of 3' to the likelihood of 3" (possibly) in less than 12 hours elapsed time.

              Cheers. - Frank

I was watching that coverage for a while - reminded me of the weather channel folks standing around on the beach when a hurricane is on the way. All the reporters standing around talking and not much else going on yet.

I don't live in NYC (deliberately) but I don't understand why the Mayor is closing the subway down. So many people in NY don't have cars and there are a lot of night workers there that will need to get home. Is closing the subways normal in a big storm? I never heard of it.

It looks like the event, Juno is tracking slightly North of it's original forecast. New York will still get hit but maybe not as hard as originally predicted. New England looks like it will still get hit pretty hard.

As far as the subway goes, no, they don't usually close it down. But, I'd rather see it shut down for a day or two than anyone get hurt or worse.

Actually it's moved further East. Cold air coming out of Canada is doing the pushing. Where I am the cold, dry air is winning and we've been down graded from 12 to 24 inches to 3 to 6 inches. It will be a dry light snow and with the wind will still be a pain in the butt to deal with.

We only got about 6 inches or a bit more through Monday, and mostly other than schools having a two-hour delay, nothing is closed in my area. It's just business as usual. We have 4-wheel drive, so snow doesn't cause us any problems living on top of hills. I'm sure it would take quite a lot more snow to slow to cause problems.

Now if you are talking traffic congestion during rush hours, that's a much different story until all the roads get plowed.

Most of those folks were told to either not come in or have left early.

That said, lets be honest. No matter what the Mayor does, he's going to get slammed, either way. It's NYC. That's the way they roll, whether the subway rolls or not.

When I first heard the prediction that we would get SO MUCH snow here today and tomorrow, they went to GREAT LENGTHS to make it CLEAR that it would be over 4" AN HOUR! As I said yesterday, I only saw about 4-6" today after several hours. Maybe someone earlier misunderstood. I don't know that much about the winds yesterday, but some WERE hard.

I could be wrong but the people who can least afford NOT to be at work are often those who work late and use the subway. You can reduce the number of trains but stopping all transportation means some people won't get home.

No ... Virginia never was in the path of this. They forecasted < 1 in here and that started this morning and should end by 10:am and there's zero wind here right now. It's just a pretty little dusting of snow. Not even enough for a real sleigh ride.

OK, thick of it was perhaps not the best thing to say. I saw the graphic covering that area, Degree is another matter. BTW I am still waiting for here. They SAY a fw flurries possible, but the hourly says that is unlikely, and should change to a 20% chance of rain by 3PM.

Didn't know they were talking about high winds. What mph is it that will break a record? I don't remember particularly high winds outside of tornadoes back there. Out here in the west, high winds are actually high winds -- would be called gales or hurricanes if over water. Over land out here they are usually sand storms and play hell with windshields.

The wind coming down into NV from the Sierras reaches 100 mph now and again - 60 to 80 is common wind storm - and occasionally there's the 125 mph gusters.

When I lived in Empire we had a few monster wind storms - star shaped valley used to get some hearty winds normally in season. Yet NV is the only place I've ever been that the wind was so strong it literally swept me off my feet. I got out to get gas and got flattened. A gentleman at the next pump told me to get back in the car and pumped my gas for me.

Anyhow -- like I said, I've never ever seen winds all that high back east unless there was a tornado attached to them.

Last I heard up to 60mph in the NYC area.
It just started snowing here. Only expecting 20mph winds here. Just another typical Northeastern storm.

That is high for back there. Would be a miserable storm - like the ones we get out here sometimes. Our snow doesn't get as deep, though. Sounds like a Colorado type blizzard. Dan (bizgrower) is out where I used to live back there and is well familiar with those by now, LOL. Anyway - if it hits, you'll know what ski season is like in CO. If I remember rightly, one 4th of July up there at around 9,000 ft, too. LMAO.

This was a doozy. It went through here like a freight train. Knocked down so many trees we didn't have electricity for over 3 weeks and it was hot hot hot here.

June 2012 North American derecho - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As the storm tracked eastward into Indiana, it became a derecho and wind gusts increased substantially, peaking as high as 91 mph (147 km/h) in Fort Wayne, equivalent to a Category 1 hurricane, at least in gusts. By that time, the system had taken on a well-defined bow echo shape, the classic indicator of a derecho.[6]

I worry more in February and March about huge snow events because that seems to be the months when we really get the huge storms with a lot of snowfall where you get the yardstick out to measure it. Not every year, but when it hits, look out.
