I ventured out to the pole barn to see if I could find some boxes that may have some of my missing things in them and stumbled upon a crate that I vaguely remembered. I pried the top off and inside were to boxes labeled in my dad's handwriting: Terra From Grandpa. My dad's dad I'm sure.

And some sort of night stand and an old glass oil lantern that I'll get to in a minute.

Anyway, in the boxes were 2 encyclopedia sets.

The first one is Titled: The World's Famous Events with a bi-line: The Story of the Greatest Nations

Inside the front cover of the first of 10 books, it says Published by Francicis R. Niglutsch New York

Beneath that it says copyright 1913, 1914

The second set has 18 volumes and is titled: The Book of History with a bi-line: A History of All Nations

Inside the cover, on the first page it says copyright 1915 by the Grolier Society London . The Educational Book Society . . New York

Below that it says Printed by The Colonial Press, Boston, Mass., U.S.A.

These are in extremely pristine condition. They barely looked used at all. One has gold gilded pages that are not rubbed off and the other has soft leather over the back bindings and the two outside corners, both front and back. They're barely worn.

How cool! Now about the nightstand thing. It is wooden and the bottom shelf is like a V, so as to put books there or something, but when you open the top compartment, the whole thing is lined in copper! Weird!

The glass oil lantern is cool because my dad left a note saying that this is the lantern that my grandfather used when he had to get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom or get a drink of water. What is even more cool is that the glass is pink!!

Awesome!!

And to think, this crate has been untouched in my attics for years and years!

That certainly made unpacking a little more fun.

How kewl is that? Those books will be interesting to peruse and see the differences in what history was written back then from what you learned in school. My dad has a set to world history books from that era, leather with gold guilding, that I used to just love to sit and read.

Nice find! I was edgy when I first read "found in the pole barn", LMAO.

Maybe, maybe not, but that is not something I'd be interested in doing anyway.

I have lots of other old stuff in there that I haven't explored yet. When I get the time, I'm sure it will be fun.

There's also a patent on some sort of pump my great grandfather invented and lots more old books to look at too, to name just a few things.

            Splorf!!

I'm quite confidant that no super heroes are in these books. Super powers (meaning nations), perhaps, but no super heroes.

Some minor eBay listings on the other set, but nothing truly of note. Oddly, somebody did take the time to scan the entire 18 volumes and is selling it as a pdf...

            Thanks Dan!

Oooh, I don't think that that is quite legal. Very interesting indeed!

WOW! They very well may be worth a bundle. I mean the dates, companies, guilded pages, and leather, in even decent condition.... But yeah, you might just want to keep them. BE CAREFUL about the lantern! When I was younger, I got a kerosene lamp for my mother. HEY, I got a good deal, and it was nice, and I didn't have much money. It cost me like $4, which would be into the tens of dollars today. Anyway, it put out soot! It wasn't very noticeable, but it built up on the wall behind the lamp, almost like those old ozone generators. But you may want to leave THAT pristine as well.

As for the patent on the pump? I wonder if it is a real valid patent on something used today. THAT could be worth more than everything else!

    LUCKY!!!

When I get a little more time, Steve, I'll get out the patent and study it more and give you more details if you'd like.

Nah, probably not worth much, I'm never that lucky, lol!

        Okay Steve,

I have the patent and some letterhead from my grandfather's company, a pamphlet of the pump with a picture and description of the "Brownie Coolant Pump".

        The patent says:

        No. 1752366

        The United States Of America

To All To Whom These Presents Shall Come:

        Whereas Frank G. Brown

WHEREAS UPON DUE EXAMINATION MADE THE SAID CLAIMANT IS ADJUDGED TO BE JUSTLY ENTITLED TO A PATENT UNDER THE LAW.

Now Therefore, These Letters Patent Are To Grant Unto The Said

Frank G. Brown, his heirs or Assigns

For The Term Of SEVENTEEN Years From The Date Of This Grant.

The Exclusive Right To Make, Use And Vend The Said Invention Throughout The United States And The Territories Thereof.

        IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF,
I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the PATENT OFFICE to be affixed at the City of Washington this first day of April, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and thirty, and of the Independence of the United States of America the one hundred and fifty-fourth.

Then there is a signature of the Commissioner of Patents: Thomas E. Robertson and an attest signature by the Law Examiner G. P. (I can't read the last name as it is in very fancy penmanship)

Anyway, I also found a red velvet satchel that has an 1879 silver dollar in it along with 30 1935 & 1936 buffalo nickles.

        Fun stuff!

You found some neat stuff, Terra. I have a few run of the mill things of my mothers and a few old used tools of my dad. There were some things I wonder where they went, but I've long run out of time ask anyone now.

It would be a good idea to put the coins in a safety deposit box so you don't lose track of these again -- especially since you have downsized!

Yeah, I think I will along with the other coins I haven't gone through. Those are in a navy blue velvet satchel.

It was such fun going through the crate. I haven't finished yet either. = )

I wasn't looking for proof, or anything, JUST SAYING! The dollar and nickles are probably worth a bit too. You probably want to make sure the coins are kept separate, and if they are free of any scrapes or cuts, they are more valuable.

WARNING, just so you know! MANY coins are "dipped". They are nice and shiny, etc... IRONICLY, a coin in good condition with the normal patina or whatever is usually prized more than one of the bright shiny ones.

          WHAT A NEAT FIND! LUCKY!!!!

I think you misunderstood me, Steve. I never thought for a minute that you were looking for proof, lol!

It just seemed to me that you were interested in it, so I typed it up for you. I found the wording to be interesting with the usage of "pray" and "in the year of our Lord".

As for the coins, don't worry, they are very dirty with lots of patina.

I haven't a clue whether it has expired or not.

I only know that Grolier was purchased by Scholastic for $400 million in 2000. I haven't a clue as to whether the copyrights carry over or not. I've never checked into it as I've never desired to buy out a publishing house, lol!
