If you are a beginner start with understanding the methods to follow:

On Page SEO & Off Page SEO are the 2 methods. In which you have to concentrate on "on page" first. Once it is done continue your off page till you have got the desired results.

On page: You have to understand the terms : Meta tags,Alt tags,OG tags etc. Then Study how to select keywords for your site and start writing your meta tags and add it to your site.

Then create your accounts in Google analytics and webmater tools: This is for tracking your sites performance.

Off Page

Then start with finding out the methods to create backlinks for your site. there are many methods available. Find out which one suits you and start doing it. Always check the Page ranks of the sites or directories on which you are creating back links. The quality is important than quantity. Continue the process and track your websites performance in the mean time. If your website is not a competitive niche you will get your results in a month or 2(Google 5-10th page). Then gradually it will reach the first page if you are doing the white hat seo methods.
