Teller County man claims he dumped gold in landfill during divorce dispute

A fortune in gold, gleefully chucked into a Colorado Springs trash bin?

That's the claim of Earl Ray Jones, a Teller County man who says he converted $500,000 in life savings into gold in May and then threw it away - all to prevent his wife of 25 years from seeing a nickel in their pending divorce.
Seems legit.

This guy aside, why do people with money get married without prenups?

Heck, considering prenups are easily voided these days, why do they get married at all if not for religious purposes?

Have the ceremony, do whatever legal stuff you need to do, but don't give any risk of giving up half your assets. With the high divorce rate and people who wed just so they can divorce and take Alimony, it really amazes me how many people still get married.

You ever see LIAR/LIAR? It is an interesting and funny movie, and VERY REAL! That is REALLY how the courts work!!!!!!!!

There IS, of course, a LOT of fluff around the part I am speaking of, though the part I am speaking of is the sole motivator for much of the protagonists actions.

A couple gets married, but it is *****ILLEGAL*****!!!!!!! Of course NOBODY tells the husband to be, but it is ILLEGAL! SHE is a minor and thus UNABLE to enter into ANY contract, let alone MARRIAGE!

OK, they have a prenup signed. The lawyers hands are tied because he can not go along with any lie! The prenup CLEARLY says, though the marriage ITSELF ALSO says so, but so many just IGNORE that, that she gets NOTHING if she is unfaithful. She is an idiot, and leaves a LOT of evidence, so she is HUNG! She violated the prenup and is thus entitled to NOTHING!!!!!!!!

OK, back to the fact that she is a MINOR! THAT invalidates the contract! NEVER MIND that IT was what got her into the marriage! NEVER MIND that they were together so long! NEVER MIND that the marriage ITSELF is such a contract! HECK, it IS in the VOWS!!!!!!!

OK, so the MARRIAGE is ALSO revoked, RIGHT? Well, yes and no! There is a set of basic rules that are kind of common sense to cover such a case! It is known as COMMON LAW! They were under the COMMON LAW marriage long enough for THEM to kick in! Never mind the OTHER rules that nobody pays attention to anymore! So he got her the money!

So you can forget about the marriage, but technically you are still married.

Uh ... actually, it was "their" life savings, not just his. They both contributed to the marriage financially. Both had jobs ... that is, until the ahole lost his.

Jones is facing a Nov. 4 sentencing in Teller County for menacing after he beat up his wife and held her captive in their Divide home during a March fight over finances. April Jones filed for divorce three weeks after the assault. Facing the loss of his government security clearance, Jones resigned his $82,000-a-year job at Exelis, a Colorado Springs contractor, court records show.
Oh ... and $500K isn't "people with money." That was a life savings. It's a pittance, especially now since the liar has to continue to hide it rather than spend it.

So instead, Jones said he raided the couple's retirement and investment accounts and converted them into gold coins and gold bars through Phoenix-based CMI Gold and Silver.

Something's not right with his story. So, he's basically stupid enough to cut himself off from half of what he had just to be certain his wife could get nothing?

Sounds to me that he is lying. In the first place, where does someone obtain a half million in gold? That kind of transaction would be logged somewhere, assuming he could legally buy that much.

Continuing on with this foolishness, just to go with the story, he then carted the gold around for disposal purposes. That would be very heavy and a landfill would likely charge by weight or size/type of load. There would be a trail that could be traced.

My bet is on that he has a secret stash hidden somewhere.

At $1,23x per ounce, $500,000 in gold would be ~25 pounds. He could've put that in a trash barrel on his curb.

Not that I, for a minute, believe his story.

Yeah. The giveaway is that it weighs 25 pounds. Like a normal man could lift that much weight....Ha!

I was only inside of a cow once. They told me it was for a "Documentary". It didn't feel like a documentary. But I met someone new.

The cow and I broke up, after meeting my parents. They weren't Moooved by our relationship. They were udderly disgusted.

My Dad told me, "Son, I know she has beautiful eyes. But you have to look pasteurize.. You're with a cow one time...and now you have a reputation. Moove on. "

Dad never steered me wrong. Daisy eventually died. But I believe she'll come back. She only gave reincarnation milk.

I wonder if he caught her cheating?

I wouldn't be surprised if he gave it to someone for safe keeping for a percentage and will try to collect on it at a much later date.

Shouldn't he be in trouble for allegedly throwing away her assets - as in theft?

Why would you think that? Their fight was over finances and she filed for the divorce after being beat up and held captive by him.

And yes, he'll be in trouble but the money has to be found before she can get her share. He's already in jail and jobless.

With his mentality - not hard to understand why she divorced him.

Hard to understand why she waited 25 years, though.

I think justice would be finding the gold and giving her all of it - after all, he threw it away so clearly didn't want his share....
