Saw it last night, terrific film. The implications for the outcome of the war having cracked the Enigma code was astounding and really brought home to me how significant it really was.

Highly recommended and Cumberbatch gave an Oscar winning performance.

Difficult to find in a lot of the mainstream cinemas however. We had to go to a more specialist one. Unreal, it was so much better than just about anything else out there at the moment.

How about this stat wise. "The cracking of the code shortened the war by 2 years and it is estimated to have saved 14 million lives"

    It was an awesome movie....

    Dr. Turing will always be a "War Hero" in my book for his life saving work... and his invention..... the "Turing Machine" (computer) seems to have caught on. :-)

    It may well have done more than that!!!!! The allies knew about a lot of plans before the nazis even moved into location. If not for the fact that they didn't want to tip their hand, they may have done better.

    Did they mention about how a few often related phrases helped them crack and recrack the code?

      Yes they did.

      The whole war from then on was a matter of percentages, what to go after, what not too, sometimes creating and leaking misinformation to the Germans as to how we got to know about their next move, all so the secret of the code break could remain intact. Otherwise, the Germans would have stopped using their machine, made a new version etc

      The secret was kept for 50 years..

        They actually DID have at least 2 variants, and both were adjustable. For whatever reason, the subs actually used a different gadget, and it made cracking the code difficult. The allies managed to capture a sub, and they tried to get the details before they, according to nazi protocol, were scuttled. They did, and managed to break THAT one. But they periodically recoded all of them, which is why I mentioned recracking.

        Ironic that the NAZIs used a device patented in another country!
