YouTube's first ever video's owner says he 'didn't think much of it' | Daily Mail Online

In 2005 a man made history when he shot a short clip for a video sharing site, but he didn't even know what the webpage was for when he did it.

Yakov Lapitsky recorded 'Me at the Zoo', an 18-second video of his friend shot in front of elephants in San Diego, on April 23 that year, becoming the first person to shoot for YouTube.

The video, which has now been viewed more than 17million times, would transform the way that people use the Internet, watch television and communicate with each other over the past ten years.

The site is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its domain name today.

The idea of sharing that video online and watching it directly "without downloading it" back then in 2005' is what transformed the web.
I don't know why someone didn't think of it before, in late 90' for example!
Downloading every "single" video just to watch it and you may or not like it was painful as hell.

I remember how Mark Cuban said YT couldn't survive and buying it was a huge mistake for Google. :/

Then again the internet was just a passing fad that'd never really catch on, and no-one would ever have much use for a personal computer.

You could not stream much until ADSL started replacing dial up. The quality was pretty poor to stop the buffering. ISDN was a waste of time. There was not much call for that sort of tec in the early days, it took long enough just to get a website to come up fully.

I have read a couple of Cuban's statements regarding YouTube...

Basically in those statements he was saying he didn't think it would be easy for YT to convert a ton of free viewers and subscribers to a paid subscription model. I guess back then he did not think they could thrive on ad revenue alone.

We now know YT is adding pay models to their arsenal, and time will tell how much revenue they can generate with those. Yes, they used to lose a lot of money, but that's not the case these days as ad revenue has made them profitable.

Cuban knows full well the power of the internet and computers, below are just a few of his early ventures.

          ○ 1982 Cuban was a salesperson for Your Business Software but was fired for trying to start his own business.

          ○ 1984 Founded MicroSolutions with $500 to support his YBS customers. The company was an early adopter/proponent of Carbon Copy, Lotus Notes, and CompuServe.

          ○ 1990 Sold MicroSolutions to CompuServe for $6 million.

          ○ 1995 Founded Audionet (webcasting) on a single server and an ISDN line.

          ○ 1998 Audionet became Broadcast.com

          ○ 1999 Sold Broadcast.com for $5.7 billion in Yahoo stock.

          ○ 2001 Founded HDNet (now AXS TV) the first high-definition satellite network.

Of course, many of us know he has his hands and feet in a multitude of things (and money) these days...

          Cheers

I hadn't known he said that. He made his money off a dotcom so don't know why he did. Youtube is so central to the web it actually feels like it goes back further

Plus, he got rid of Steve Nash.

Ha. I was going to mention that too. I don't dislike Cuban really. I find him interesting. I like him most of the time on Shark Tank, one of my favorite shows. He's obviously very bright and successful in many ways.... But, not signing Nash was one of the dumbest moves in recent NBA history. IMO it cost them 1 or 2 additional Championships. Just dumb.

He also hurt the Mavs by not being able to get along with Don Nelson, who played a bigger role in turning around the Mavs than Cuban did IMO. Cuban was wise enough to keep Donnie Nelson, ( Don's son ), who was really the guy who "discovered" Dirk and has done a great job as GM and President of the Mavericks.

Just to clarify, my post wasn't related to Mark Cuban.

Those comments were made by other people. The "no need for PC's" was paraphrasing the chairman of IBM, and the "internet is a passing fad" was a quote from the Chief Investment Officer of the insurance company I used to work for at about the turn of the century.

To be perfectly honest I'd never even heard of Mark Cuban until this thread.

Got it. Thanks for the clarification.

You had quoted Tim's Mark Cuban post in your reply and that's why I quoted you. I'm glad we have that straightened out now.
