I'd say there's something wrong with Florida laws that allow it that close to neighbors.

My father has had a rifle range on our "side" yard for 30 years. The law here is you can't fire guns within 100 yds of other people's property. This is a rural area and there's no one living around his range. It's no longer used now that he's retired and no longer testing the rifles that he used to build.

Simple solution - pass a noise ordinance. Pretty stupid it would be legal to begin with - what does the bullet hit on the times he misses his target?

A range we use is in the country well away (out of sight of) anyone else's property - and even so the range is located at the base of a hill so missing a target sends ammo into the dirt...not into wherever.

He could get a silencer, and a noise ordinance would affect other things.

I was once in a stationary store, heard some racket, and the sales person informed me there was a *****REAL***** gun range next door. I even ended up becoming a customer. I wouldn't call this a gun range at all. From what I see, it would be illegal. But perhaps MY definition of gun range got lost while they were redefining the language!

I've bolded the two pertinent parts. I was OK with the range next to the stationary store because the range WAS large, isolated, and insulated. If someone shot a 45, it wouldn't hurt anyone in the stationary store at all.

Even when we're out hunting, if we know that there's a house within a mile, we do not shoot in that direction.

I'm also surprised that it's not illegal for this to happen in Florida, but you can tell that this kid has never had proper training from anyone with a brain.

I can't figure out how this would be legal. If it is legal, it's probably because nobody made a law because they figured nobody would be that outrageously selfish, stupid, and attention hungry to pull this shit. I can hardly wait to see subsequent stories about booby traps the guy falls victim to that neighbors fed up with his crap set for him. I would also think the first time a stray bullet ends up in someone's yard, or wall of their house that will be enough to put his activities out of commission.

I bet it is a misunderstanding because of all the garbage with english! "The guy built a shooting range." OK, that is legal, safe, etc.... But THAT guy DIDN'T! It looks like he built, or is building, a bullet trap at best.

ALSO, many REAL ranges limit NON FMJ ammunition. Here is one bulletin as to WHY:

      http://www.lni.wa.gov/safety/researc...lead_range.pdf

A RANGE would keep bullets from getting near others, and would help mitigate poisoning. A bullet trap just limits the mess and is safer if he is a good shot and people don't come onto his property.
