I see this all the time now. Check out this blog post and note the photo of jeans on shower hangers.
23 Useful Life Hacks That Could Make Your Life A Little Easier

At the bottom they have a credit link to this page:
16 DIY Ways To Make Life Easier | Diply

That page used the same photo with a credit link to this blog where it looks like the photo originated:
DIY : Create Extra Wardrobe Space • Design Every Day

It is possible they asked for permission. But it seems like many sites just pike photos from wherever they want. Is this common or am I on the Internet too much?

Sadly, I think it happens a lot. A lot of website owners and other online marketers seem to think they can "borrow" anything (articles, images, etc) they find on other sites as long as they either give credit to the source or post a link to the original site. Some don't even bother to credit the original source.

On the other hand, it could just be a stock photo that all those sites have paid a fee to use. I'm not saying that is the case, but it is certainly possible.

It's probably not a stock photo offered by any of the mainstream stock houses, plus the DED blog has series of photos that show the entire project. I did a reverse search of the images and I only found the images in a few places on the net and not at a stock agency. Generally speaking, the majority of legit stock sites won't allow pictures with the trademarks or brands clearly exposed.

In this case it appears pretty obvious the someone from the designeveryday blog (possibly Kassandra) shot the images since they have included images of the rod, the hanger mounts, a wider shot, a shot of the required tools, and directions on how to do the project. Here is what her about page says...

My name is Kassandra – born in Canberra, Australia now living in Vancouver, Canada. Part graphic designer, part photographer, baking enthusiast, lover of fashion and admirer of architecture. This little corner of the web is a place for me to share my inspiration and my creative adventures. So please Enjoy!
Yeah, it's common. I have had my photos pirated/borrowed hundreds of thousands of times without my permission.

That said, the blog has Pin it buttons on all of the photos so they want the images to be shared most likely to draw traffic back to the article.

I responded to an OP's comment in a main forum thread yesterday - his post:

So what if I`ll create a site with stolen content from other sites? Put a nice looking theme, change title and images. And promote this site in fb, twitter, forgetting about google. If I can get traffic from social networks so can monetize with some PPC. So it doesn`t require a good knowing english.
Several posts in the thread after that - and NO ONE (except me) thought the OP's idea for stolen content was a problem.

I just looked at that thread --> what a joke. Granted he did make the comment in the middle of the thread, and some people only read the OP but still...

It doesn't surprise me though....a large percentage of the people on here think it's perfectly ok to take what you want, from wherever you want, and then monetize it on your own personal or business sites. No curation, no permission, no attribution, no linkbacks, no licenses, no credits and no remorse.

This is what many internet marketers do. These so-called marketers used to make me really angry, but so many are doing it not much can be done about it unless you want to spend all of your days trying to rid the internet of these people.

Anyway, I put my thoughts on that thread. Short and sweet....he should be banned him from the forum and the internet for posting something so stupid.

        Cheers

    Isn't that just link building?

I suppose the owner of the blog calls it "curation" and he or she thinks they are using the image under fair use doctrine. And yes, he has built an outbound link.

I agree and it's unfortunately becoming typical. Ask an impossible question to answer - and watch people post answers as if they make sense.

Don't speak English? No problem. No money to outsource? No problem. No lack of "advices" is there?
