I just watched that episode. It certainly took me back to the days when I used to race home from school to watch Lost In Space, followed by Batman, and then turn the telly over to watch The Goodies.

Yes, it might be B/W, and it takes a while to get going, but clever story.

Doctor Smith gets his reward, and then it goes sour!

And Penny, just add's some more fuel to the fire!

I think that this is up there with "The Twilight Zone, - All the Time in the World"!

So even if you are not a Lost in Space fan, still worth watching!

It's a lot easier to turn the telly over than do a handstand for half an hour.

        Oh, and BTW - smartarse.

        Upside down, nonsense!

But our tv,'s keep sliding off the furniture and it gets really annoying at times!

A good Koala or Wombat usually fixes that one!

It's a GREAT episode, but few will see it and even fewer will take it to heart. HECK, they are in SPACE! In the US TV Series "V", they built HUGE ships, and flew FAR away for a VERY VALUABLE item! Oh sure, they had other things, but the item that was MOST precious, that they used the most effort to get as quickly as possible, that was so valuable? *****WATER*****! In the early 19th century, IIRC, what was once GARBAGE became valuable. TODAY, it is merely the byproducts of refining, YUCK, OIL! Even on STAR TREK, they speak of cultures having garbage that was valuable.

So if an alien culture, EVEN ON EARTH, says something is VALUABLE, it is kind of dumb to assume it will have a value to YOU anyway! But he was willing to trade EVERYTHING for even that VAGUE promise.

Well, that is Doctor Smith, greed takes over warnings, and he goes for it!

But at least he can throw some precious metal rocks under his bunk, and cash it in on return to Earth!

Hmmm, l think that in "V", they made out water was what they wanted, but they were after some human meals!

They could have gone to Saturns moon with more fresh water than Earth has, if that was their motive?

Actually, the water WAS a secret. The meals were a plus, but they did them surreptitiously. If they were more open about it, they could have loaded up their ships and left.

As for the water on/in Titan? WHO KNOWS. It sounds hard to get, even if it IS there.

As for smith? They NEEDED to have an internal foil to keep things going, and he ALSO provided the reason for them being lost. I think he is the EPITOME of what many saw "human nature" to be, and his very EXISTENCE on that show is a scream AGAINST it! I mean THINK about it! HE wanted the mission to be a failure, and ended up sending all into oblivion and he is the least capable of the bunch, even more so since he thinks he is the MOST capable, and he is there for the ride!

First, Thanks Shane, for bringing back the great memories.

Here is Jonathan Harris on the Conan O'Brian show, in character. A few minutes of sheer joy, for me. Thanks again.

Armm, no, they recently found through the probe scanning the moon that it does have substantial volumes of water.

And far more than Earth does; so it does tend to put a hole in the water from Earth for the series.

      At least now it does!

Dealing with an environment you can freely work in, and water that is almost always ABOVE freezing, with a somewhat stable climate makes it EASIER! So the earth wins on all counts. Outside of being a LITTLE closer, MAYBE, TITAN LOSES!

Even though Gary Oldman was an inspired choice to play the role in the movie remake, there is only one Dr Smith, and that is Jonathan Harris.

Like Leonard Nimoy with Spock, Mr Harris completely owned the part.

(Oh and BTW, the movie sucked).

I love Lost In Space. All the kids use to meet at the house that had the color TV to watch it. I remember the experience but none of the plot lines.

I recorded them when they came back on but, just recently saw, for the first time, the premier and first few episodes. Smith was so much more evil at the very beginning. It was much darker and featured things like spacewallks and space suits. The robot was even useless then.

Too many bad costumes and stupid stories after that.

It has been a LONG time but, IIRC, one of the things that smith was going to do was hinder the robots ability to help. The robot, IIRC, was to be a general helper and maintain things while they weren't available. Of course, if there were any backup plan for an event such as this, smiths character would have to see to it that it was done to save his own hide. But THEN, there would be a short show.

Yeah, funny thing about people that shows take advantage of. They always want to show you something that makes you ask why or how, and leave you hanging, so your curiousity FORCES you to watch. You always know commercials are close when someone gets in trouble, or things get weird.

Yep, the first episode, which wasn't shown on tv, didn't have doctor Smith!

They got lost landed on a planet, found some ancient civilization with terrible props, and it bored me to tears!

Even the Jupiter two, (which is cool) looked like panels of tin tapered together.

No, definitely need him, besides without him the whole crew would have died when the asteroid hit!

True, he wanted the whole crew dead, except Don, who he needed to pilot the ship back to Earth was dark, but he mellowed over time!

Irwin Allen, might have been a genius, but even he, needed to test things before proceeding!

      STUPID STORIES!!!

A ship that looks like a hillbillies house, with a Were-Wholf, and sexy witch, hmmmmm, yeah, l take your point!

The ship was constantly TOO SMALL, so they quietly increased the size three or four times! I saw a show just a few months ago that covered JUST THAT! BTW MANY have alluded to the comments, etc... And I ended up seeing a video that covers many of them, and so.... HERE!

BTW as stated here, and in wikipedia, he was born to russian jewish immigrants, and apparently had a relatively normal and common accent. He said that it was "merely affected". I often wondered about this kind of pretentious type of speech, and apparently it was developed on the east coast of the US for use in the theater as a kind of american/british mix. HERE is a description of it in wikipedia:

Mid-Atlantic English - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Listen to William F Buckley, for example. HE has a similar accent, but was born in NEW YORK, etc... I never thought he was from America, but he is!
