Some GOOD News for a Change

Two piece of good news that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere.

1. McDonalds has announced they will begin serving only chicken raised without antibiotics. The changeover will take a couple years - perhaps because the amount of chicken sold by McDonald's will CHANGE the way chicken is raised in this country. About time!

2. The circus is in town next week - and Barnum and Bailey/Ringling Brothers just announced they are discontinuing the use of elephants in their shows. Again, this will take a year or two to phase out as they need to replace the acts and also find homes for their elephants. The reason given is the rising public concern about treatment of these highly intelligent animals.

        Or a thumbs down button...

And, after so many thumbs down, that person gets a 1 week "thumb ban".

I could go on but you get the idea.

That's great but the real problem lies in Africa where these majestic mammals are slaughtered for their ivory, mainly (Man's encroachment on their shrinking habitat another factor, bushmeat etc.) ... Until the root cause of their demize is addressed their populations will keep declining...

That is a good possibility Kay. McD.'s is one of the largest purchasers with around 14,000 locations here in the states.
I'm not sure if it's related, but Tyson says they have already started phasing out antibiotics in their chickens.
The organic food sector is also going up. According to the USDA it was more than double the annual growth rate forecast for all food sales in 2012. USDA ERS - Chart: Consumer demand drives growth in the organic food sector

Tyson and others will have no choice if they want to sell their chickens....the McDonald's consumption is enormous for these companies.

EDIT: Thom, I didn't know until a newcast yesterday that antibiotics have been added to the EGGS before they even hatch...then more antibiotics in the feed...and we wonder why we have super bugs that we can't treat with antibiotics???

Of course it does - but everything done to improve the lives of elephants in captivity and to erase the ivory trade...will help.

We see videos where adult elephants work together to free a baby elephant or to rescue a member of the herd from a hole or rope. Then we say nothing when these animals are chained in a row where they spend day after day?

If there is any term that needs to ERASED from our language it is the term "dumb animal" - because they aren't.

I made a statement here (I think a couple years ago) where I said McD. is largely responsible for how our food is grown. The reason being the amount of lettuce, tomatoes, chicken, beef, etc. they use in a year. I wouldn't be surprised if Tyson supplies them their chicken and that's the reason Tyson is phasing out antibiotics.
The antibiotics are "needed" from the egg on up because of how they are raised. The end of antibiotic use signals the end of factory farms.

        Thom,
there would be nothing more pleasing to my ears to hear this to come to fruition with Mcd. and Tyson.

My kids eat those things like crazy. And as a parent I have to take responsibility.

As far as elephants of course the Circus will not be as fun for kids like they once were.

But these creatures have been abused too long. Glad to see this

This is all really good news to me. When I hear no antibiotics, two things come to mind. 1. They need them for factory farming so this definitely signals an upcoming change in our farming practices again. 2. The USDA and FDA now allows meat sold with obvious signs of ilnness, etc. They used to have to discard meat with tumors, leisons, etc. and now suddenly they are allowing it. WTF is on with that? Also - there are plans to ship our chickens to China for processing then shipping them back - which is nightmare stupid to allow China at our meat supplies when people are dropping buying anything edible from that country (and anything non-edible at the same time).

It sounds like moves are finally being made in the right direction, though, so this is all good.

As far as Elephants - also good news, even though just one step in a mile run that needs to happen. I'd love to see people globally pay for an army of mercenaries that will just go out and level poachers off the face of the planet. Quick easy fix. But this is a start, so I am happy about that.

I was really happy to hear about the Asian Elephants losing their jobs. Asian elephants have been taking jobs away from hard working American elephants for far too long. Nothing seemed to help; Elephant picket lines, elephant demonstrations, and elephants threatening to quit their jobs. I say the Asian Elephants should pack their trunks, and leave.

Why should American elephants be forced out of their Circus jobs, because Asian elephants are willing to work for 30% less hay. I see the signs "Equal Hay For Equal Work!", and I support these elephants completely.

Now the Elephants are going to start taking the jobs of Bengal Tigers. Siegfried and Roy had better watch it, or they will be making elephants jump through hoops.

That is all for now. More as the story develops.

Without their antibiotics, chickens will get flu and will die. Mcdonalds will buy them cheep and start selling us chicken with colds. I hate cold chicken.

So that's what I hear in Mcdonalds restaurants. I thought it was incessant swearing from the managers to their staff, but all they were really doing was reminding them of a key factor in the preparation of their chickens, telling them to Cluck Off.

That would lead to customers complaining about finding bogeys in their Mcnuggets. When the teenage employees are about to kill them the chicken's would say: "Here's Looking Achoooo Kid"

      Sal,
They are implementing policies around parts of the World known as 'shoot to kill'.

I am not for taking human life but in this case with the Save the Rhinos I am. These people are murderers. They murder this glorious animal for money and they kill wildlife rangers as well.

" Very occasionally, shoot-to-kill is not only tolerated but encouraged, as a way of sending a very clear signal to poaching gangs, and rewarding the bravery of the rhinos' protectors. In Kaziranga National Park, India, forest guards receive a cash bonus to their salary if they successfully wound and kill a poacher. This stance has affected funding; indeed this policy caused the BBC Wildlife Fund to pull out of planned funding for the programme a couple of years ago. "

the elephants are some of the BEST treated
No, they aren't. The problem with elephants in the circus is their size. Unlike some of the cats they can't be in a cage where they can move around. For about 22 hrs a day they are chain in one spot - then are released only to do a show and be chained again.

This is something do routinely to animals and even pets - they tie them to one spot or confine them to a cage like they would lay down a book on a table until they were ready to read the next chapter. They don't realize the boredom, the discomfort, the loneliness of an animal used as a "thing" much of the time. Worse, some know it's wrong and don't care.

That's good news to me. When it comes to humans destroying endangered species, they need to be exiled from earth. Those animals are part of eco-systems and if they are eliminated from those systems, chain reactions are started - and some of those can completely devastate a whole system.

We're living in times that we are in dire need of restoring our eco-systems or we all stand a chance of extinction. If it comes down to getting rid of a few people that are so stupid with greed that they exacerbate an already dire situation, they need to be put out of our misery.

Of ALL the animals, you would think the elephants are some of the BEST treated. I mean look at the lions and tigers and likely bears, etc.... But salesguru is right. Outside of the idiots that seem to want to mistreat elephants for NO reason, IVORY is the main concern. If people can, they will just cut it off, but usually they just kill the animal. EITHER way is bad.

As for the idea of animal intelligence, a lot of animals, relative to humans, may even seem smarter. By that I mean with spatial and physical intelligence, they seem to be on a par, or even better than humans. In one test of primates, gorillas and chimps supposedly did better than humans. Of course THEY grow faster, etc... so it was a bit unfair, but STILL, they did better than historically given credit for.

Not sure why we are celebrating no more elephants in the circus. This is a sad sad sad day.

They are hi IQ critters....we should want to see them demonstrate this intelligence.

If the problem is treatment of them..then the solution should be to train and care for them in a humane manner..is that so damn hard?

      ..is that so damn hard?
      yes, it is hard.

The circus travels constantly - uses tents - no large areas to secure elephants....and so these creates stand in one place - chained - for 22 hrs out of every day. It is not humane - never has been.

Just so people can "see them". They aren't demonstrating their true intelligence in the circus - just doing tricks demanded of them. If you want to see elephants you can see them in large wildlife parks and in some of the better zoos.
