I'm getting a puppy!

Well, that is if I don't test allergic to them which I'm confident I won't, and we wait until all the snow is melted, you know, like the end of April, beginning of May. My birthday is May 10th, so it will be perfect.

When hubby got home from work, he wanted me to get some fresh air, so we went walking around the property in shin high snow, though. Anyway, he was showing me where the deer have been bedding down, and the old fashioned wagon frame he found with the old metal and wood wheels, and all of the flower beds we have between the house and the pole barn. He asked me what I was thinking about planting in my flower gardens and I was giving him some ideas.

He said to me that when all of the snow melts, there's going to be a lot of yard work to do, raking leaves and cleaning up fallen branches and asked if I was going to help him. I told him yes, I had already planned on it and it would be such fun with my new little puppy chasing behind.

He said, Honey, I know you want a puppy, and you've scared me so much, I'd give you the world if I could...But...Well...you'd have to train it, feed it, walk it, and care for it, get up early in the morning and take it potty. I said, yep after each thing. I reminded him that Dad raised AKC dogs and I've trained many.

He asked me what kind of dog I wanted and I told him I would show him. Or if I couldn't have one of those, I wanted to rescue a small breed dog. On my computer, I showed him many pictures of the Chiweenies and he smiled and chuckled at a couple of the puppies. Then he said, well if they're not too expensive and we don't have to travel hundreds of miles to pick one up, okay, if you're not allergic. His only request with the Chiweenie was that it would have ears like this:

or this:

And not like this:

or this:

because those look like rats, he said, lol!

Wheeeee! I get a puppy!!

I can't wait.

Butters is British like me and we use some strange words sometimes. Diddy is small but cute small.

I like the first dog best. Those ones with the mega sized ears look a little weird.

Cute small, I love it! Exactly what I'm after.

          I found it! It's a Teacup Pomeranian.

Awww! They are too cute, but I'm afraid a hawk would swoop down and steal my little baby from me.

Thus you need a Lurcher as well to protect him

Even in the UK hawks can be deadly for small pets, I once had an African Grey parrot that used to sit in the window, on two occasions a Sparrow hawk smashed into the window to try and grab him, thank heavens for double glazing!

Those top two are adorable, Terra. I agree with your hubby on that one. I always chose the little rottie puppies with the longest floppiest ears, too.

Adorable looking dogs, Terra. Weird that I was just thinking yesterday that possibly a pedigreed "weenie" dog might work for you. A former neighbor had dachshunds (they had 3 of them) for her boys because I think they also had allergies although nothing as severe as what you have.

You might have seen my posts before about our area having coyote problems (and a couple blocks away they killed a large dog that was tied outside.) I think they might have moved on as the deer seem to have moved back into the neighborhood. In any event, we still don't let our little (actually not so little) pup out by herself. You will need to be careful with a dog that small so nothing grabs it.

          ,

Terra - got fingers crossed for you here. Hope it works out but have faith that if it doesn't, then it wasn't your dog anyway. These guys have a way of just being there when the time is right. If this is your kid - you might be right about your sweetie bringing him home for you. If not - your kid is just around the corner, so don't fret if this sweetie isn't your sweetie. Yours is close now. Very close.
Thanks, I'm going to let his one play out and not force anything. I've waited too long to gain this ground and don't want to jeopardize it. If I have to wait a few more months, I will. I don't want to, but I will, lol!

Think long and hard about the breed you choose. Toy breeds are incessantly yippy-yappy and never STFU! lol Additionally they are ankle biters. Everyone I now that has brought home a Mexican hairless rat has dropped it off at the local shelter. They said the dogs were totally unmanageable and continuously did their business in the house, regardless of how often they were taken outside..

The wrong choice can be heartbreaking down the road.

Of course everyone will tell you that the breed they own is the best breed in the world. The truth is the best breed in the world for you will be determined by your expectations of what a dog's role should be in the family setting, your living situation, your tolerance for different traits in various breeds, recognition of life-expectancy (something no one ever thinks about), known heath issues with certain breeds and cost of ownership.

      My only recommendations would be.

      1. Try to rescue a dog from your local shelter or a national rescue organization.
      2. DO NOT by from a puppy mill or a Craig's list ad.
      3. Buy the absolute best pet insurance you can find. You will sleep much better at night.
      4. Invest in some basic obedience training. You'll be glad that you did, for years to come
      5. Adopt a female Pit Bull. :-) You'll better understand the phrase, "Joy on Earth."

      I'm very happy for you.

Thanks for your input, I appreciate it, but I have done my research and find the Chiweenie to be a perfect fit for what I am looking for. They're a lot like me, small, playful, energetic, loving and a bit stubborn, LOL!

Well then ... present him with facts. It's going to snow every year, whether you have a dog or not. You can see, the dog is standing in snow.

... and if you were allergic to dogs, you wouldn't be able to visit your friends who have 4 dogs.

It's a hybrid breed ... I can't imagine that they turn up in the shelter regularly.

I know here the little dogs go fast. There's another advantage to the rescue pup ... she's housetrained and the cost of adoption is well under $100 usually but buying from a breeder can cost hundreds.

Cost shouldn't be the primary consideration, but it's a bonus. The already housebroken plus the undeniable joy of giving a dog a second chance at life are real benefits. There's nothing like seeing how happy and grateful for a better life these dogs are.

This little girl's adoption cost is $400 and that is for recouping her vaccinations up to date and her getting spayed.

I think he's planning on getting her without me and surprising me. He's been talking about a bed and food dishes, toys and checking on the best food for her...if we got her.

Wow ... Walker was $60. He is microchipped, neutered, up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative. But I have seen some adoption fees in the higher range like that. That's what it would cost, if not more, to have all that done.

$400 for a rescue pet is high, but maybe that's around the going rates in your area. I was aggravated by a couple hundred when we got the pup we have now. The shelter did provide vet care for a month, after that we took her to our regular (expensive) vet instead.

Terra, one other thing I would really urge you to consider is to get a pet crate for her. Something large enough to be able to move around freely and stretch out inside, just in case you need one in a hurry.

Agree with this. It really makes a difference in training. I bought a huge one for Walker. I wouldn't let him roam the house if I were in town. He would go to the bathroom in the house undoubtedly. He was raised outdoors. He's an incredibly smart dog and has caught on very fast, but only because I am here to take him out regularly. He also goes in at dinnertime so we can eat our dinner in peace. He is obsessed with food. lol.

The rest of the time, it is open and unlocked, has a bed in it and his food and water bowls in it and he uses it for naps willingly.

Cost shouldn't be the primary consideration, but it's a bonus. The already housebroken plus the undeniable joy of giving a dog a second chance at life are real benefits. There's nothing like seeing how happy and grateful for a better life these dogs are.

I have to second this....I've gotten two pets from rescue shelters, and all have worked out great.

Hansel (the dog) basically attached himself to me to the point he could never bring himself to wander very far off. If he was in his carrier, and felt he was too far from my side, he would cry real loud until he was near me again. A very loyal dog for sure.

Maggie (the cat) is even a more interesting story. When she came home from the Petsmart shelter adoption event, I tried to do the pet intro stuff they tell you to do.

Maggie decided on her very own it was all BS, and climbed over the separating barrier and introduced herself to Hansel.....and they became friends instantly.

Hansel chased away the bad neighborhood cats that upset Maggie, and Maggie watched Hansel from the window as he did his business in the back yard, and let me know when he was done....and they shared everything, even dog food. Talk about your match made in heaven.

And when Hansel died, Maggie sat in his carrier and grieved for weeks....fortunately, we had just gotten a new kitten named Mittens prior to Hansel's death...and her spunk helped Maggie recover.

                      Rescue pets rock.

April -- everyone with any animal that wouldn't be able to walk with, and keep up with you in a disaster that required you to leave on foot needs a pet case. That's just good sense.

Very close.

What a beautiful puppy! - She will be a gorgeous dog when she grows up.

Terra - I hope hubby is planning to surprise you....and soon!

I have heard of high adoption fees but usually it's because that money is used for more rescues. I'd rather pay it for a rescue adoption than to a breeder any time.

A Denver shelter (Denver Dumb Friends League - Should be Denver Smart Animals League) had an area code day (march 03 - 3/03.) They let people adopt dogs for the price of the area code, 303 - $3.03. It may have been to make more room and/or let people get pets who could not afford the usual adoption fee. It may also have been for certain ones that were not getting adopted.

Their website says it was to get more pets in the hands of people. Normal screening procedures still applied.

Well, this is it. I'm about to leave for my allergy testing.

I'm a little scared. About 15 years ago when I was getting shots to desensitize me from bee stings, we got to a certain point and I had an anaphylactic reaction.

My skin is still really red and burning as well as burning underneath it, Yikes!

At least Bill is going to be there to hold my hand, lol!

Keep your fingers crossed for me?

Of course I did. They said it didn't matter and it didn't matter if I was on steroids but I could not take any antihistamines 48 hours before the testing because that would throw off the tests.
          I'm devastated.

I am allergic to things I never would have dreamed of.

          Corn
          Oats
          Rye
          Barley
          Wheat

I didn't think I had any food allergies. I have no clue what I'm going to eat now. I have always said that I should have been born Italian. I live on bread and pasta! Well, I used to.

And the things I already knew about, dust mites, molds, bees, and cat dander.

          BUT NOT DOGS! Hurray!!

Oh, and this terrible reaction is from chemical toxins in cleaners coupled with my other allergies. It sort of all built up to a head. Hubby is now washing down every surface in the new house with all natural cleaners, all the windows, ceilings, walls, light fixtures, etc. They're either from the previous owners or the company the bank hired to remodel the house and take care of the listing and showing and yada, yada.

          You called that one, Sal.

Anyway, once hubby found out I wasn't allergic, he contacted the shelter and "Darlin' Darla" is gone.
I'm not having a very good day.

I can't really get on with the food stuff thing. Sounds like you have been eating all that stuff for years with no ill effects!

You move into a new place, new location, and shortly after you get an attack. Got to be something there, different air, something in it. different plants around you, something used in your house (as you say)

            Not buying it.

You don't have all the info correct, Ian. I have been dealing with allergic reactions and allergies for the last 5 years. Since we bought our old house. As soon as it turned cold and I was indoors, allergy induced asthmatic bronchitis set in. Every year. It then would progress into walking pneumonia and two falls ago, pneumonia. I was just getting progressively worse.

I actually have been breathing much better at this house with no wheezing or crackling and the air I breathe here is much lighter, it seems. I can take huge breaths without a cough or crackle or wheeze! It's been awesome!! The air here is delightful!

I tested negative to all pollens both spring and fall ones. Anyway, we still have a lot of snow on the ground. Spring hasn't even sprung here.

And the reactions to the mold, dust mites and cat dander were pretty intense. All of those were at the old house, just dust here.

It's okay if you're not buying, I'm not selling.

Interesting, only 5 years you say, before that all ok? So you moved into your old house 5 years ago and got them. Was this a dramatic location change then and was the move to your home now just to a different locale but not far away from your previous one relatively speaking.?

Although I never get allergies or reactions to anything in the Houston area. (and you know whats that like here) a lot of people do, including the wife. She is much better these days but not perfect. However, we have been using high quality Nikken air cleaners in our home for a number of years now.

Here's an interesting thought. You go right now to some completely different location, like Las Vegas for example, say for 2 weeks, eat as normal and see what happens. I know that's not always practical but would be a radical approach see if all your reaction symptom's go away, your redness etc.

If they do, that could rule out food reactions and point to something in the local environment or in your home.

                Just a thought.

Added: Are you eating lots of fresh local produce grown in your area?

The first move was 20 miles away, that was five year ago. I still had the allergy to bee stings, yellow jackets being the deadliest and the allergies to the antibiotics. Dust allergy under control.

Then all heck broke lose. Adding new allergies every couple of years, the mold and my slight allergy to cat dander went to severe. I couldn't wait until warm weather where I could be outside and practically lived outside all spring, summer and early fall. Then when the cold set in, back in the house and sick again.

The new house is only 6 miles away, but in the new house I have been fine. All the best filters for allergies, brand new duct work, etc. We used those at the old house too and kept getting the ducts cleaned and then replaced, and then cleaned again, but I was still sick.

It's definitely not the new house. And I tested positive to so many chemicals used in cleaners, it was nuts! I always use organic cleaners, and that's why my allergist believes it's from either the previous owners or the cleaning company the bank hired until the house was sold.

Edit: I buy fresh produce from local venders and from friends who grow organically, both.

I buy it Terra. Listen to your allergist. They know what they're doing. If they tell you to eliminate those foods, find substitutions for those foods. Do as they tell you and then you be the judge. You'll know whether or not you feel better and have less reactions.

I loved my daughter's allergist, expensive though he was. He saved her life.

                  OMGosh!

                  Look what I found! Wally...

Wally is 35 miles away, was
born 1/6/15 and weighs 3 lbs. He is a spunky little guy with lots of personality. There is never a dull moment when he is around. He wants a person or family who can keep up with his energy, but who will also snuggle with him when he is sleepy because he loves to cuddle when he is tired.
They don't list an adoption fee though.

                  And Snickers!

Snickers is only 10 miles away and his adoption fee is $250. Their best guess is Dachshund and Chihuahua mix.

Snickers is a great boy...he is approx. 1 year old he loves other dogs and children...he is house broken and has a great personality
I can't wait to call hubby on his break!

              Not buying it.
I "buy" it but not the grain itself. Terra's had troubles for years and she's in farm country that isn't all that organic - - and they've been spraying more deadly, and just plain more pesticides every year there. Given her general breathing problems, I think it's the grainfields themselves out there. I couldn't live in that area without ending up severely ill for a living again either. It's why I moved in the first place. I lived by organic farms in OR and those didn't bother me. Wherever they spray - I get sick.

Terra - sorry about the puppy. It must not have been yours. Now that you know - yours will be coming around soon.

Did you tell them you're still in a reaction? How can they get a reading if you're still in a reaction? Good luck. I hope you're okay. This doesn't sound right to me. Makes me even happier I no longer deal with MI doctors. At least if they put you back in to a major reaction doing this before you have the other allergen out of your system, the lawsuit for malpractice will allow you to afford any dog you want.

Keep checking petfinders.com and call the shelter tomorrow and ask them to put you down if she should come back. I've seen two and I know there's more that people adopt and then bring back because they're not as prepared for a dog as they thought they were.

The little dogs go fast. I saw one that I wanted to meet and instead of jumping up and going right then, I waited until morning. She was gone. I'm glad now because Walker fits in so well here and I love him, but I was looking for a smaller dog.

Where are all the buttons - like "quote" and thanks, etc?

    Anyhow, Terra:
    Corn
    Oats
    Rye
    Barley
    Wheat

What you're allergic to is the 50 some odd pesticides they use. Of course, the corn they tested you with is GMO, you realize that right? Anyhow - those grains are sprayed like you wouldn't believe and if you're eating store-bought bread, those grains aren't washed well. Grain gets absolutely soaked just before harvest because it forces it to ripen evenly. In other words - if it's not organic, it's so pesticide ladden that you can't tell whether it's the grain or the pesticide that's the allergy, although a lot of people do react badly to grain. They don't grow crops special for making serums for allergens - they just use what's generally on the market and what is generally on the market is toxic because they make it toxic.

Cut the grain carbs completely - and once you're normalized - get all organic ingredients and make your own bread and see if you feel anything different the next day. If you eat it for a day or two and start to get any reaction - digestive, skin, lung, nose, etc. that's the telling point. Anything - not just what you think of as an allergy reaction. Give it a month or two before you do that so you'll be able to tell the impact and won't have to guess.

I'm already going to go shopping and get some almond and coconut flour. Of course, I'm not even going to try anything with it until after I have completely cut everything else out of my diet and get the feel of what that's like.

I have a follow up with my allergist next Thursday. I like him. Especially when he told me all of the stupid things my old doctor was doing. Haha!

Then when he told me the hospital was stupid too for what they did, I knew I loved him! He told me he was going to be my new best friend, he was going to know me like a best friend and he was going to help me. He told me that I'd feel better than I have in years when he was through.

Bill really likes him too. Of course, he likes any and every body who calls my doctor stupid, lol!

SUPPOSEDLY, corn can have gluten, and oats are often contaminated with gluten. The rest have gluten. Gluten can cause internal reactions that are similar to, and debilitating as ALERGIC!

The symptoms relate to bowel problems, and some low nutrition symptoms, This is because it apparently fouls, and can irritate processes in the intestines.

I'm surprised dairy products are not on the allergen list (I could have missed or forgot reading if it is).
Those milk allergies have weird manifestations. I'd still consider cutting it as you go through the

      I know, haha!

Here's the thing. Hubby is now saying to wait again.

He said, he wanted to get Darlin Darla for me as soon as we, actually he, found out I wasn't allergic. But when she was gone, he had time to think. And he thinks we should wait to until all of my medical bills come rolling in to see how much we owe, how much isn't covered by our insurance.

I hate it when his practicality wins over his emotions!! Haha!

I also hate it when he's right.

I know I'm getting a puppy and I know they are out there. But for now I'm just going to have to look, drool, and wait.

But I want little Wally so bad, I can feel him in my arms.

      Big sigh!
