Has Anyone Else Noticed The Paradigm Shift?

At one time, the OT was a great bunch of pals, buddies, comrades, etc. all gathering together to chill and hang out in the OT Lounge and discuss current events, have fun with lighthearted ribbing, tell jokes and basically behave like a small town club, like Cheers, or something. It was the OT gang against the "Upstairs" and it was fun.

But as of late, it seems lines have been drawn, schisms have been created with this circle against that circle, and believers of this against believers of that, the enlightened ones against the backwards thinkers, the intelligent against the simple, and the like. Small little camps set up here and there within the gang. It just seems like the gang is being usurped and undermined and it's very disheartening to watch, as well as participate in when the circles you've been labeled into cross over into a rival circle of a another front.

Yeah, we are Warriors, yeah, we are the OT Warriors, but an army divided against itself cannot stand. United we stand, divided we fall. Can't we be like "Cheers" again instead of a rival gang bar?

Can anyone else see this or is it just my meds? Either way, it makes me want to

Well Terra, I enjoy the OT forum and I enjoy the people. I'll never swallow much of the stuff that other people believe here, but that doesn't make it me against them. I still enjoy the people and conversations. I just don't adopt their beliefs.

There have always been little disagreements. It isn't one group against another. It's a very few agitators that revel in provoking anger. And so, threads get gobbled up in arguments.

The vast majority can disagree without getting nasty.

    At least, that's my perception.

No, No, I have always thought that we were mature in the way we handled things without getting nasty, well except on one certain topic, or on rare occasion. It's not necessarily the topics being discussed, or even what is being said, per se, but an underlying tone just beneath the surface that seems to be festering like a flesh eating bacteria.

Can you understand the difference that I'm talking about?

It's almost like there are attack packs of vicious wolves going for the jugular, craving the smell of blood spill, or something like that.

What I see is an attack pack of one or two, with the rest being able to disagree civilly, albeit passionately most of the time and forget it once a thread is done.

I get it. But I see that from only a few people. We all have different levels of sensitivity. Only a few are really mean spirited. And, occasionally, that person is me. When someone I respect (or Dan Riffle) mentions it, I delete it.

Well, I never saw it as that severe. I certainly never give anything said here that much credence and while I may be obstinate, that's just to push buttons. I love seeing people getting all bent out of shape over subjects that they perceive they have some great knowledge of. As soon as you come across as an 'expert' you deserve whatever you get.

I know there are a few people here (very few) with actual degrees. I will pay attention to what they say, but I still may not agree with their beliefs. Education is good, but not infallible. I'm a lot smarter than most of the people I know in my life that are college graduates. Not better educated - just a helluva lot smarter. My degree from the College of Hard Knocks is worth something - and not only did I graduate with honors, I am permanently enrolled in the Continuing Education program.

I'll admit it - the religious crap drives me up a wall because it always come with, "I'm right and you're wrong. I know the truth. You can't prove there's no God" and nonsense like that. Outside of that, I don't take anything posted here in a serious vein. I believe I know as much about some subjects as others do in their pet subjects. Rarely, if ever do I pontificate on particular topic. If I post more than a paragraph about anything it generally relates to a a personal experience and I post it in that vein (just as I'm doing, now).

The other thing that drives me up a wall is the 'You're personally attacking me" card. What a joke. If you comment on a character trait that someone is blatantly displaying, your somehow attacking them. What wimps. I've had a lot of mean things said to me and about me. I have never used the personal attack complaint unless I was being sarcastic after someone used it against me. If you act like an idiot and someone says you are acting like an idiot, you are NOT being 'personally attacked.' You are being called-out for the way you are acting-out. Maybe I'm too thick-skinned, You can call me a moron, imbecile, douche bag, or Thom and Don's favorite for me - loser, and I won't squeal like I've been shot with the insult arrow. I won't report them. I won’t ask them to apologize. They just make me laugh. Annoying them to the point that they throw a tantrum is one of the highlights of my day. Yes - OK - I live a cloistered life. I get my kicks in the strangest ways. So what?

I have witnessed very few serious rumbles during my time here. There are some very, very touchy people here, though. A few that even want to dictate what is acceptable behavior based upon their own personal sensibilities. Always moaning about how others act, believing that they're paragons of social behavior. Screw that load of crap. You're in the basement. The swamp. If you can't stand the heat, get the hell out of the kitchen. Don't just threaten that you are going to use the ignore button. Actually use it. But they won't - and do you know why? Because they're afraid they might miss something else that then can piss and moan about, either out loud or internally. They're not happy unless they are being obeyed. Cut me a break.

So - no - I don't see what you are bringing up as so intensely negative. Perhaps you are referring to days before my arrival which I can't relate to. (Those were lovely times - I'm sure).

People come and go all the time from forums. Generally they always come back, especially once they figure out that the people here are the only ones that will tolerate them. :-)

This is just recreation, folks. If you give it more significance than that, it's on you. We're not obligated to share in the degree of importance that you give it. That's a generic 'you' and not aimed at anyone in particular.

        Cheers. - Frank

P.S. None of it matters. You're going to be dead soon. Enjoy the time you have.

          OMGoodness!

I hope you didn't take what I said as a personal attack on you, Frank.

I didn't even have you in mind when I wrote that. Actually, no one individual. Okay, I lied. There was one. But what I meant was like what Dan said, it was tonal, an ''air".

I've never been offended by what you say, I think you're fun to play with. And you're right, there are many topics that will never be ironed out as long as we live and breathe. So why must we go there? That's what I think. I don't think I've ever been told I act idiotic or am a loser.

          Frank, No!

          Don't say that to me.

I actually did use my ignore button today and I felt extremely liberated! Haha!

I have never doubted your intelligence at all. I believe I even told you that some of the least intelligent people I know have the highest degrees. I also hold a few myself, but I wouldn't want to flaunt them or even talk in the biggest words that I can think of. Where's the fun in that?

See, that is my continuing theme. Fun. I just want to have fun because you're right. Life is too short. My personal motto in life is this - There comes a time in life when you have to let go of all the pointless drama in your life and the people that create it, and surround yourself with people who make you laugh so hard that you forget the bad and focus solely on the good! After all, life is too short to be anything but happy!

That's one of the reasons I fell in love with the OT lounge. I was surrounding myself with people who make me laugh. And yes, much of it was BF. Before Frank.

If it becomes more of a drag down here than fun, then I'll just do what I always do. I'll let it go and find fun somewhere else. Like playing with my new puppy.

Anyway, I sincerely hope that you didn't think I directed that at you. I did not.

Well, we all have that, to varying degrees. Unfortunately the way we are perceived rarely has anything to do with our true personalities.
I've never been offended by what you say, I think you're fun to play with.
Careful. I don't think you really want to go there. lol

Most people are terminally bored. Having an argument on a forum actually adds something to their day. We shouldn't want to deprive them of that. They need it to make it through the day and hopefully get to tomorrow - so they can start all over, again.
            Frank, No!

            Don't say that to me.
Too, late. If you are going to open the door, I am going to accept your gracious invitation and walk right through it. Besides - you knew what you were doing. You may be only 5' 2", but you're a 'big girl.'

I have never touched mine. Uh, my ignore button, I mean. You do bring out the worst in me.

Well, if you don't have the other things you lose sight of what happiness is and feels like. Everything is Yin and Yang.

Not the right way to approach it. Just pick and choose the people that you want to associate with and don't let the others bother you. Why would you ever give anyone that much power over you? You are part of what makes this place what it is and you should never let anyone chase you away, for any reason. You say you want fun. If so, you should always read the post of those you disagree with the most. It's always good for a laugh and it also gives you that guilty pleasure of feeling slightly superior to the cretin in question. How do you think I maintain the ability to feel so good about myself. Look at what the hell I'm surrounded by. lol
Anyway, I sincerely hope that you didn't think I directed that at you. I did not. Terra

Most forums, groups and organizations generally go through four stages of development.

              Form > Storm > Norm > Perform

Personally, I've noticed a calmer, gentler OTF.

P.S. Why are you subjecting me to such a vicious personal attack. :-)
I dunno what you two have going but I took it as a gift from heaven (pardon the religious reference) because it completely destroyed the fabrication some of the ladies were hinting they were ready to spin that its all one happy functional warm family down here sans one particular poster (I can't think who that would be but I am sure the mystery would have been subsequently revealed).

Don's lonely and unloved. I feel obligated to give him a few sympathy posts to try and brighten his day. Can you imagine living his life? That pain and hatred he displays is very sad. Sad, Don. Sad, lonely Don.

Please, everyone - say something nice to Don. No one else will. :-)

Nope, it's not just you, which is why I've been limiting my time here of late.

Terra, what I see is a tonal shift in the OT dynamic. What used to be a light-hearted refuge for silliness and casual discussion is, and has been, morphing into a more debate-oriented arena.

The OT survives due to a core unit of players. This isn't a forum of random threads with multitudes of random users. It's driven by maybe 30 regulars. Some move on, some stay. The tone of the forum is made up by those regulars. We've lost many of our more light-hearted regulars and they've been replaced with people who are driven by debate.

The underlying festerment (I double-checked...it's a word) is the growing pains of the transition. It's neither good nor bad. It just is. We just have to decide, as it becomes what it will be, if we, individually, still want to be here.

Yeah, I think that is it. The playfulness has morphed into more of a cut throat mentality. That's the pulse I've noticed as well.

Well, I've never been one to be driven off by wolves, but I guess there could be a first time for everything.

Time will tell. I'm just a girl who likes to have fun, but if the fun evaporates, I just might too, lol!

It was much better when I could mention the country that can no longer be named.

But then a shadowy cabal of users decided to gang up against me because they irrationally hate the country that can no longer be named and they are supporter of neo-colonialism.

That is the major reason why the quality of discussion has been generally lowered.

Now that you mention it, I've noticed it too. For the first time this year I've started adding people to my ignore list, whereas previously I'd just scroll past them.

I think thats the closest to an honest admission of what some people want than I have seen actually admitted to and I commend you for admitting it. I have always thought that was the case. However I don't know if Freelancer would agree that going back to the "good old days" of a small town club of buddies in the OT section being a "gang against the "Upstairs"" is in fact even good ole days. I might be wrong but I think they may want the OT section to be for everyone - all Warrior forum members inclusive of those upstairs (who get put down non stop down here nowadays) . Frankly the upstairs brings more traffic and is what Wf is really about. Maybe the better thing to do is invite more of the upstairs people down to get to know everyone. That would be the more neighborly thing to do.

As for the one or two people you refer to? Thats more about the same old club of buddies thing you were honest enough to admit to before. Ask Jag for example about people disruptive to him feeling a part of the swell club down here and that number would grow by at least two or three more people who you would NOT want included as disrupters to the good ole day feel. For example I don't think he would consider it all nice and fuzzy good ole days being called an "Ass Monkey" by a certain poster because she doesn't like his threads.

So perhaps again it comes down to wanting to suit a certain group over other WF members be they upstairs or down NOT wanting to welcome everybody into the good ole days club.

You are the definition of an internet troll, Frank. Maybe you should upload your picture to the Wikipedia page...

In Internet slang, a troll (/ˈtroʊl/, /ˈtrɒl/) is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion. (Wikipedia)
Fortunately for most of us, trolls are banned in most moderated forums...
