Does It Matter? Yes! . . It's Dark Matter. And CERN Is Firing Up Again This Week.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be operational again soon, following a 2 year shut-down. Does recreating conditions very close to the supposed "Big Bang" scare you a little?

To see what actually was produced at the big bang, you need to create the conditions of the Big Bang - and the only place you're likely to get anywhere near those conditions is at the point of collision in the LHC. The faster the collision, the closer you get to the Big Bang temperature.

I'm supposing that by the time we would know there's a major problem, we'll be gone and we can't stop them, so, yeah, it matters, but, if we're still here to worry about it later, then we might learn something extremely astounding.

I'm surprised you still have time to post here considering all the bookings you must have to entertain at kids parties.

WP, isn't it funny how sometimes, the very thing someone accuses others of is the very thing they are guilty of themselves?

People who "foretell" anything tend to have less understanding of science than anyone else. However they are masters of "pure ignorance".

Yep, entirely agree. The Outback and it's inhabitants is a great example.

In a previous thread (a few months ago I think), I gave links to many renowned scientists who expressed disbelief that this project is even going ahead, and they warned of the dangers.

No matter what anyone says, we DON'T know what to expect from this . . . purely because it's never been done before. And that really is no reason to attempt it when you grasp the concept that we're not trying to make electrical advances here, or break the sound barrier, . . or even create some new techno fad. No. What's happening is they're attempting to recreate conditions that existed at the time of the creation of the universe.

Do you comprehend the scale of the CERN operation? Not many do. And not many appreciate that the new set-up is twice as fast as it was 2 years ago - and untested in full operational mode. It really is quite scary.

I'd love to say I told you so . . but none of us will be here to read about it if it all goes pear shaped. Ah well, I'll just look forward to the eclipse on Friday instead.

Not a minuscule knowledge. And it is opinion. But it's based on sound physics. What is your "worry" based on? It sounds like a smart arse question, but I am asking sincerely.

It's been foretold? Really? Well, we should certainly listen, then.

(OK, that was a smart arse answer)

This is probably a poor analogy.
To me it's about the same as using flint and steel to create a spark to start tinder on fire to demonstrate how lightening starts forest fires.

So, you're saying these guys with their LHC are going to create a little spark, which will quickly spread and engulf our entire existence?

Nope. I'm saying that they are going to create a subatomic spark, that will help them understand how huge sparks are created.
