Another great sporting event just started...

So far my pic of Kentucky being the first team since Indiana in 1976 to go undefeated is holding up as they toyed with little Hampton U. last night.

TL, you know what this reminds me of. UNLV 1991 !!

Iam predicting the same here. I think UK is setting up to get beat.

There offense is good but not great.

And can you believe Larry Brown said they would make Eastern conference playoffs in NBA.

What drugs is he taking ??

Remember smart people do get Dementia. Maybe the case.

I will go out on a limb. Some will disagree but UK would not win ONE NBA game.

0-82. They could not even remotely stay even with the Knicks. If Knicks beat Spurs there ain't no way UK could do it

People do not realize how different it is in NBA.

Robert, I remember very clearly the John Wooden coached UCLA team that won 88 games in a row with a team that featured hall of famer Bill Walton and a few other future NBA players. That team was an amazingly well coached team and I can't help but think they would have done well in the NBA also. Larry Brown is still coaching, a hall of famer, has plenty of experience in the NBA, including a championship, so I wouldn't dismiss what he said so quickly. We'll never know though.

When I first heard it I quickly dismissed it but you and Kurt may have a point.

But there will be no way of proving it true or not - unless someone puts up some money or gets Kentucky to play a few NBA teams for charity.

        Here's a question...

Do you think the worst team in the NBA could win the tournament?

Larry Brown's protege and very good friend is also John C.

I think it was just a little bravado and emotion showing here.

        Nothing more than that.

If UK was going to make the playoffs in NBA that means they have to play NBA rules with the 24 second shot.

Sorry, to me it is laughable to even consider that they would get within ten points of the Lakers or Knicks in the 4th quarter.

        It wouldn't happen.

UK was struggling today in the first half against Cinci. And part of the 3rd quarter.

In your wildest imagination do you think the Knicks would be struggling towards Cinci in any quarters?
Especially in NBA rules with 24 second clock ?

Like I said it wouldn't happen.

Andrew Wiggins the best in college basketball, it took two months in the NBA to even get to double digits scoring in multiple straight games.

There is no one on UKs team right now who is as good as Wiggins was last year.

Guys, NBA is just a different game. Stop with this nonsense, please.

These guys get paid millions and they eat.drink.sleep basketball 365 days a year while College players practice and study for mid terms lol

They were saying that same thing about Running Rebels in 91'. Hello, you might want to beat Duke before you start talking about that.

I still think the Badgers have a hell of a chance to beat UK

If they can avoid a slow start, they do. On a somewhat related note, I've lived in or within 15 miles of Stevens Point, WI for the last 35 years. This year the Stevens Point High School won the state championship, and the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point won the division III national championship.

Maybe it will be the Badgers year, too. Gotta love a hat trick.

Larry Brown is the only BB coach to win a championship in both the NBA and college, so he's as qualified on the subject as anyone. But he's also a bit of a drama queen.

The Bill Walton teammates I remember most are Marques Johnson and Richard Washington. Wasn't Dave Meyers on that team too?

Here's the roster for the 1972-73 team:

          Vice Carson
          Casey Corliss
          Tommy Curtis
          Ralph Drollinger
          Larry Farmer
          Gary Franklin
          Larry Hollyfield
          Greg Lee
          David Meyers
          Swen Nater
          Pete Trgovich
          Bill Walton
          Bob Webb
          Keith Wilkes

Wilkes had the best pro career besides Walton.

I should have gotten Larry Farmer. He's from the same neighborhood in Denver I'm from.

Swen Nater, Walton's backup, also had a solid pro career in both the ABA and NBA. If I'm not mistaken, he lead the league in rebounding one year.

I think that Kentucky could pull off a few wins over the course of an NBA season. The playoffs would be a stretch, though, in my opinion.

There are several things to consider. The USA has lost games in international play before when the team was comprised mostly of NBA players. Also, injuries happen frequently in the NBA just like every other professional league. On any given night a great college team could pull of an upset.

On the other hand, conditioning would play a huge factor for Kentucky because they've only played 38 games so far and the longest their season could potentially last this year is 40 games, less than half of an NBA regular season, so depth and conditioning would also play a huge factor.

It's interesting to talk about, but there's no way we'll ever really know.

Two #3 seeds and a #4 seed going down on the first day already has my brackets messed up, as with most people, I suppose. I did pick Kansas to upset Kentucky just to be different from most people's picks.

I also picked Wofford to upset Arkansas. They came up 3 points short.

    Go Badgers!

TL - Thought you might enjoy this...

I was listening to a sports program in the car this afternoon and they said there were over 11.5 million brackets submitted to ESPN. After one day, less then 100 people still had a perfect bracket.

On another note, I'm playing in the bracket contest my ISP is having. As of the last update, the guy in first place has picked 22 correctly. I've picked 19 correctly - and that puts me in a tie for 108th place. lol - my chances of winning appear very slim at this point.

      Well, good luck to you.

Would it be luck or would it be your sports prognostication savvy?

      Less than 100 wow!

Is ESPN offering anything to anyone for winning?

I guessing no one else has that many contestants in their contest.

They should set up a national bracket contest with the winner(s) splitting up at least 10 million bucks - even more!

Of course people will have to buy into it but the cost to get in could be very low and think of the excitement it would generate.

Just a million sports fans putting up $10 each equals 10 million to be split up by the contestants.

But ESPN had over 11 million entries - wow!

I think someone may be already doing it. But if ESPN does it...

With basketball, it would definitely be dumb luck.

I did move up 10 places though. I'm in 98th place now. That probably won't hold up long.

Is ESPN offering anything to anyone for winning?
I don't know, the show didn't mention prizes. He was really just making the point of how few had a perfect bracket after just one day when there were so many entries.

Denver sports writer Woody Paige's mom won a bracket contest a few years ago. There were a couple 100,000 entries, if I remember correctly.

The tournament continue today with the Sweet 16 Round!

    - Dennis's Badgers are still alive but they go up against traditional power North Carolina.

    - Kentucky tries to march on versus the Mountaineers of West Virginia.

    - The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame seek to short-circuit the Shockers of Wichita State.

    - Arizona attempts to cross out Xavier.

My picks today are Kentucky, Dennis, The Golden Domers and the Wildcats of Arizona.

    Enjoy!!

      Who is Dennis ?

I was going to root for the Badgers as they might be the only team that has a chance against UK.

But they are going up against my Mom and brother's alma mater so I will have to root for UNC.

I hope Mountaineers can at least stay in the game a little bit

        He already did that...

( I think he got the Nets for just 2 years at 5 mill per year - which should have earned him financial security - much like what Steve Spurrier did to the Skins of the NFL)...

...and I don't think he'll be doing that again unless he goes to a team that has a good chance at competing for the crown. But that's just my opinion.

Yeap I tell you I hope you guys can dethrone the Cats.

But honestly, for anyone to beat them it will have to be like the US beating Russians in 1980 Olympics.

It will nearly be that great of an upset.

I just cant see anyone coming close to UK after tonight

Today, the round of 16 continues with these 8 teams vying to become one of the Elite Eight!

Louisville - NC State: The Cardinals try to fly high over the Wolfpack.

Oklahoma versus Michigan State: I have a feeling Magic will be there.

Duke takes on the Utes of Utah - whatever that is.

UCLA/Gonzaga: Storied program takes on recent upstart Gonzaga.

    My picks...

Pitino moves on, MI summons enough magic to survive, the Blue Devils bewitch the Utes while UCLA will be DOA and will probably get mauled by the Bulldogs of Gonzaga.

    Enjoy!

TL, did you fill out any brackets? If so, how do your brackets look?

Of the four teams that are already in the Elite Eight, I had three of them picked. The one I missed was Notre Dame. I had Kansas going to the final four.

For the other half, I have six of the eight teams vying for the other four spots. I've got Duke, Gonzaga, and Oklahoma going to the Elite Eight. I had Villanova in the final four, so I had one miss there. I'll go for Louisville in that matchup. I also had Gonzaga going against Iowa State in this round, so Iowa State was my other miss.

It's hard to pick against a Tom Izzo team in the tournament, but I did. One of the few games I watched this year, was MSU against the Badgers in the Big 10 championship game. The Badgers didn't play their best, and the game went to overtime, but MSU didn't score a single point in OT and lost by 11. Not scoring in OT made me thing they wouldn't get past both the #2 and #3 seeds. I did pick them to upset Virginia (the #2 seed) but guessed their luck would run out after that. I could easily be wrong about that.

PS - I got as high as a tie for 7th place out of 355 players in this bracket contest, but fell into a tie for 38th now.

Nah, I'm not sure I've ever filled out a bracket but the tournament is always a lot of fun. Maybe next year.

I don't really even watch the games until maybe the elite eight and then I almost always watch the championship game.

Good luck against Arizona on Saturday.

Kentucky is a college team! They are striving to end a 40 win and 0 loss season!

Either way they have put their self in the record book hall of fame for the most consecutive wins in UK history.

NBA is something that received our last coach Rick Pitino. The guy that now coaches UofL?>???

Kentucky persevered and won in the clutch. I give them credit here.

But I think everyone agrees it was a complete shock.

      Kentucky is totally beatable.

I know they had a few games in regular season that were right down to the wire.

But last few weeks with their domination I truly thought it was going to be a cakewalk. And I think Big Blue Nation including Ashley Judd thought so too

Curious if people now still think UK would make it in the NBA Eastern Conference playoffs

For some reason I don't think they will!

I'm going to stick my neck out and say that UK will take it all.
I've never done that before but I've really watched them closely this year.

Their play is't always amazing but they get the job done. It's not just dumb luck.

They don't always take off and crush the teams they play. Yes, it has happened but only when the teams they play lose their composure.

Kentucky seems to be able to step up their game as needed so when the going gets tough they seem to get just a little bit tougher.

I'm a little biased because I've had a cousin play for KY in the past. You may remember Cameron Mills? His dad also played for UK back in the day, Terry Mills.

I've seen KY play much better in the past although this teams ability to work together and avoid taking a shot just to showboat is what defines their victories.

They know what needs to be done and work together to accomplish that goal no matter what seems to happen.

Just my .02 from ground level here in Louisville Ky.

      Have a Great Day!

I was listening to a sports show driving home from out of town yesterday, and one of the topics was Frank Kaminsky's pro potential. One guy thought he'll be a really good pro, and the other guy thought he'd only be a marginal role player because he thought he was too clumsy.

I think he'll be good. He's came a long way in the last couple years.

The most surprising guy to me on the team right now is Sam Dekker. He's having a great tournament, and it was too long ago I was cussing about him tossing up too many clunkers.

Who will go to the championship game?

Will Michigan State's magic spell continue?

Well, since both my Oregon Ducks and Arizona are out now (Blast you, Wisconsin!!! - Lol), I have to pull for Wisconsin to win it all. I've never been a fan of the other 3 teams. I have great respect for what all of those coaches have accomplished in their careers, but just never been a fan of their schools.

At least I've spent some quality time in Wisconsin and if they win I can say that both of my teams lost to the eventual champs.

Izzo is a great coach and getting another MSU team to the Final 4 is proof. However, he won't outcoach Coach K. And Duke has better players.

Kaminsky is a big guy that likes to go outside. However, Kentucky has a number of big guys with the talent to cover Kaminsky on the outside.

It'll be the Red and White against the Blue and White instead of the Blue and White against the Blue and White in the national championship game - Monday night.

Lots of strange calls both ways.

Will they all go pro now?

Or will coach Cal, convince them to stay in order to win a national championship?

    Will coach Cal leave himself?

      Dennis,
I know you are counting down the hours.

Iam excited for you. I told you early the Badgers were the only ones that had a chance against UK and they did it.

Reading SI article on Frank Tank from the other week. He was talking about if he had gone to UK he would have never played at all since he was a late bloomer. And it took each one of us collegaite years to move to another level,

It really makes you appreciate a program like that instead of the "one and done' crap with UK. Personally, to me that is not what collegiate sports is about. oh well.

    Condolences Dennis.

I only saw the last 8 minutes of the game since I was watching the 2nd half of the 10 Commandments with the kid - for the first time. (she had to watch it for a school project)

IMHO, two blown calls, both with under 3 minutes to go was the difference in the game.

Both blown calls resulted in baskets for Duke - a total of five critical points that helped Duke go on a 10-0 tear during crunch time.

After the two blown calls I wanted the Badgers to win even more as that would have been justice.

    But such is life.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the kind words. It would have been nice if they'd have won, but it was a great ride to get to the championship. They've got nothing to hang their heads about.

In my ISP's bracket contest I came in 5th out of 355 entries. That's way better than I thought I'd do. The top three win money. I was 10 points away from being tied for second.
