I remember met this old dude 10-12 years back who said he was in WW2 and when I asked him how many he killed he said he just ran and hid when the fighting started.

I still remember that to this day. He went on to live a long life probably tons of kids and grand-kids, all cos he was a coward.

So what is better? Who can say.

Well, interesting threads for a start.

    As for cowards . . .

He might have been speaking tongue in cheek to you, WC. Most people I knew who were in WWII really didn't want to talk about it. Perhaps he would open up to his stories to another vet who has a more perfect understanding of what the troops went through and the survivors who got back home.

If he really was trying to cut off painful memories, he left you without recourse to more intrusive and painful questions. Asking how many he killed in battle is not something he would want to relive.

    SMH.

First, WC, you don't ask any war Veteran how many people he or she has killed in combat. Period. That's the epitome of disrespectful. If the person wants to talk about it, that's one thing. But that's deeply personal. Like April said, most don't want to relive or think about any of it, even though many do through flashbacks, nightmares, and the memories that haunt them for years to come.

Second, because you talked to one person who was in WW2 and he said he ran away and hid (maybe the guy actually has a medal or two), but he's lived a long life you conclude he's a coward (he may have told you that to avoid your invasive question) and you jump to the even more ridiculous conclusion that "cowards live longer".... ?

I'm guessing there's a whole lot more to his story. No surprise whatsoever if he didn't want to talk about any of it with you.

Here's a thought for you, WC - if you've never faced the horrors of combat (and I suspect you never have), don't be so quick to judge how anyone handles them. I've never been in a kill-or-be-killed situation (and I hope I never am). I've never had to carry a weapon or had one pointed at me. I've never had bombs going off around me, or had to worry about stepping on or driving over an IED and getting blown to pieces. I've never had to witness my friends getting shot or blown up right in front of me. Have you? I can't imagine anything more terrifying.

I can almost guarantee he wasn't able to hide the entire time, so I'm guessing there's a whole lot more to his story. No surprise whatsoever if he didn't want to talk about any of it with you.

Its so long ago I cannot specifically remember if I asked if he killed anyone, only remember his reply. And no the way he said it, it wasn't tongue in cheek or whatever.

Yes, l read about someone in Europe, (l think that it was England) before WW2, who was an artist, knew war was coming and decided to emergrate to a neutral country to get away from it!

He ended up living in America.

        Coward, not sure, clever, certainly!

Cheryl; I was 99% sure you were a woman. To be honest though, I was only about 40% sure your name was Cheryl. I just forgot.

In contrast, I didn't know Dan Riffle was a man, until our second lunch together. A woman would never stiff you for the tip. And Kurt has this real Bruce Jenner look to his face. He confuses me. He has the evil demeanor of a woman scorned.....but his command of English is more indicative of a man...or a socially inept woman. Maybe if I heard him cry, I could tell the difference.

Of course you ran and hide in a battle to dodge bullet. The situation is to hit and not get hit so you will do everything in your power to not get hit by a bullet. If you are going to flaunt yourself and fire like a daredevil then you will get hit by a bullet and die. It doesn't mean if you are running and hiding to not get hit you are already a coward. The simple act of going into a battle is already courageous in itself.

If I was a coward, would my battle cry be "Not in the face! Not in the face!"? I didn't think so.

It really was. I never saw it coming. I assumed he was going to go with "Are her hills alive"?..or maybe "Whenever I feel afraid, she holds my head erect".

When we found him, Ianfear was a scared little boy, sleeping in a gutter. We molded him, and....created a monster.

            And, by the way.....
I expected you to thank him for the post. But Cali? Frankly, I think she needs a firm talking to.
