So, what's the teacher's motivation for this - is it PC "I must do what I can to discourage cookie consumption" or is she scared that a parent might sue the school district for NOT being a PC cookie monster?

Either way...what are we coming to?

OMFG Permission to eat a freaking COOKIE????? I mean seriously.

Even if the kid has diabetes, he would know if he can eat the cookie or not.

I don't see it as much PC correct as it is teachers being afraid of litigious parents in this now sue-happy society.

I'd have to approve and then add a note warning the teacher that ONE Oreo is never enough for my son...

It's this PC world of "Cover Your Ass".

If they didn't send the note and get permission some kid is going to go home and say:

"Cool, mom! We got to eat Oreo cookies in Science today"

"What! But that violates our religious belief/health agenda/policy against eating anything containing sugar/chemical x/not blessed by the great spaghetti monster!"

Followed by a 7 figure lawsuit...

    Seriously?

I guess you've never heard of peanut/nut allergies. Even If a food product doesn't list peanuts/nuts in the ingredients it could still be manufactured in a factory that uses peanuts in other products where traces can end up in non-peanut products.

A kid will eat cookies without thinking. That puts all the liability on whoever supplied the food product.

BTW, Nabisco (Oreo) also manufactures Nutter Butter cookies (peanuts). Odds are the factory that produces Oreo cookies manufactures other types of cookies in the same factory.

With all these new laws and fears and everything, I just can't help but thinking how we Baby Boomers and older actually SURVIVED our youth!

For birthdays, Valentine's Day, Christmas, Halloween, etc., homeroom mothers bought in baked goods and candy and we didn't need permissions slips to eat anything. And nobody sued!

I have this theory, that DOES have a good basis in fact, and a lot of reasons why I believe this way.

Around the 1940s, the US, and likely some other places, saw the family unit start to degrade. The priary reason for this seems to be the evnet, and effects due to preoccupation with, WWII. Around the 1960s, there was a movement that has grown to create what we now have today. That movement is along the lines of what has always been predicted as a small scale consequence in the case of something like what happened in the 1940s. Nobody thought it was likely to happen on such a large scale so fast.

Baby boomers are defined as people born between about 1946 and 1964. So around 1946, give or take a few years, things started going topsy turvy. They affected people from that point on, but I think the most affected are those born to people going back to people born shortly after, or that lived their early years through the effects of that time.

These ideas have been around for a long time, and seemed to take off around the early 1900s. They were just so darned persistent. Some say they were trying for hundreds of years, but prints are left on the 1913 "fed", the treaty of versailles, etc... It really makes one wonder... The treaty of versailles, by merely ignoring all the innocent citizens, might have seemed reasonable, but it really DID set the stage for the NAZIs, and WWII. And THAT caused the 1940s breakdown. HECK, it may have caused the 1929 depression!

So those that are baby boomers are on the cusp of when this garbage really took off, and most of the older people where affected only in pockets of society. So people in the deep south were more racist simply because they were exposed to more things reinforcing those ideas. The same is true of the "PC" ideas.

Another uniquely American experience - being held liable for something that is not your responsibility. Teachers aren't food policemen, nor should they be.

Peanut allergy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The percentage of people with peanut allergies is 0.6% in the United States. ... Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School asserts that recent increases in peanut allergies, and the measures taken in response, show elements of mass psychogenic illness: hysterical reactions grossly out of proportion to the level of danger.

They need to stop their crap and start NOYB laws. I am deadly allergic to peanuts, but was not a drooling moron. Just because a kid is 5 it doesn't mean they don't know what will or won't make them sick if they eat it. I didn't know oreos were a risk - but then we got cookies the right way and made them at home so we weren't eating chemical garbage, we were eating wholesome garbage.

Schools really need to be put back in their place. It's getting sick how everyone thinks they own everyone else's kids. They (schools) don't seem to be able to discipline bad behavior, but they can monitor what the kid eats and call the police if they bite food into the shape of a gun or forget they have their boyscout knife with them. I can't imagine having a kid now days and allowing it to be exposed to the whack farm that public education has become.

Yeah, don't you love it? If the kids get hurt, it is YOUR fault, or nobody's. If the kids are better, it is due to THEM! Oreo IS a cuss word now. Outside of that, I am not aware of ANY direct problem with it. OREO became synonymous with "half breed", or "uncle tom", simply because of the color and placement of them. Of course, as was said earlier, they MAY be created in a plant dealing with allergens. In such a case, a VERY allergic individual must assume that they will be exposed to those allergens, because they might be.

That's clearly NOT a mohawk, but since WHEN is that a military haircut? I have known a number of people in the military. I have lived near and on bases. I never saw that.

Just my luck, I looked up marine haircut, and now it seems like the pictures they post as primary examples are all like this. I don't remember it being this way earlier. ANYWAY, I didn't say it wouldn't conform, only that I hadn't seen it, and it wasn't standard like THE military cut. Oh well, either way, it isn't a mohawk. Mohawks are longer and thinner, and I doubt THEY would confrom with the military.

Bobby Ray Memorial [school] was named in honor of a soldier from McMinnville who was killed in Vietnam. "The school should be ashamed of themselves."
Should be, but aren't and never will be. They're training conformist children who aren't able to think for themselves, and they abhor anything remotely military.

I have a feeling my kids' teachers were SO HAPPY when my kids were out of school! I argued with them up one side and down the other over their complete lack of common sense.

I had one teacher send my daughter's schoolwork home where her name was marked that it was spelled incorrectly.

I wrote back to the teacher, 'Did you name her?' ggrrr

I had another teacher send her work home with a C- on a paper that I edited. The things she'd marked wrong were very questionable. I wrote back, 'I'm not the stereotypical single mom in the city. I'm in college and acing every one of my English courses. I'm majoring in Journalism and your check marks are INCORRECT.'

Daughter brought the paper back home the next day with a B+.

With my son, he has epilepsy, but it's not the falling down, grand mal seizures. I had it out with one of his teachers at a parent-teacher meeting. He insisted that my kid was lazy and doesn't pay attention, etc. He wasn't accepting that his medication was adversely affecting him.

I had to fight tooth and nail and take time out of work, plus print out a handful of medical journal articles to prove to the school that my kid needed testing for "special ed" classes.

I told him, 'I pay my taxes so you get paid. Do your job! In case you didn't know, you're looking at a potential dropout if he's not helped. That's YOUR job.'

They finally agreed to test him and moved him into the Learning Disabled classes where he excelled and finished all the way through high school and graduated. Then went on to tech school for welding.

He graduated in 2000 and I was like - THANK GOD! No more dealing with STUPID teachers!!!

Well, I have made it clear what I think of most "teachers".

As for your daughter "not spelling her name correctly"? Don't let it get you down! There is one person I heard of. I don't know if she went to college, but she DID go to a highschool for highly gifted students. She has had a lot of success as a star. SHE "can't spell her name right" EITHER! She spells it "Khrystyne Haje"! BUT WHO CAN BLAME HER? Her mother had a competition of sorts to find the oddest way to spell it! What are they doing marking him down for misspelling his name anyway? Do you have ANY idea how many names are spelled weirdly? MY name used to have only TWO american spellings, and mine is one of them. Some STILL think I spell it wrong! I spell my name the SAME way Wozniak does, but NOT the way Jobs does! They are both named STEVE ALSO, and spell it differently.

I can somewhat understand the teachers concern. Depending on the grade and age of the students though.
My grandson has Autism and sugar turns him into an over hyper violent little kid. Naturally my daughter has to keep a watchful eye on what he eats. I know she would rather be informed about what the school is going to give her son to eat rather then getting called to the school because her son became violent after eating a cookie loaded with sugar.

Then shouldn't the idea be to watch out for sugar? Sugar can be in ANYTHING! Even bread and pizza have SOME sugar. And some carbs may not be considered sugar but eventually can have the same effect.

ALSO, you have to REALLY watch such things, because they are QUICK to give kids drugs that will have the reverse effect. If I had a choice between the two, I would rather be restricted from sugar.

That was my point. The amount of sugar in breads and doughs doesn't seem to effect him. Cookies, candy and other high sugar (or corn syrup) products do.

She feels the same way Steve. She would rather make the effort to keep sugar away from him rather then put him on the drugs that would be needed to keep him calm after eating sugar.
