                  Butters, our police have always had guns. I can't imagine them being an effective deterrent to criminals without them. The US is, however, a much larger area, so you probably don't have the potential for the same amount of hardened criminals.

                  I also don't believe in forbidding the police and the law-abiding population to have guns. Criminals don't obey laws and people should have some means to defend themselves when necessary.

                  What I miss are the mounted police there used to be. I've always loved horses. On the other hand, some of the police ride motorcycles! Not sure if that is still ongoing as I've not seen any for awhile.

    With a gun like that, in the US, they MIGHT put you in jail for a short period. If at night, you COULD end up dead, if they mistake it for a potentially REAL gun. In the US, during the day, I think they would generally react much like the british there do. BTW US police generally DON'T walk around with rifles! OH, they may have them in the car, and they walk around with GUNS, but generally NOT with rifles!

      The only time our police carry guns are if they are protecting something high value like parliament, Downing Street etc... Or at major travel hubs, other then that they are dangerously out gunned!!
