People are funny sometimes (myself included)

I would like to share a quick "incident" that just happened to me that may seem strange to you...

Or maybe just me and I am over-reacting... if you can say that.

Keep in mind this is by NO means the first time this has happened to me... and I can guarantee it wont be the last....*sigh*

Sisi and I (my wife to the left in my profile pic) have a membership to the ONsen Spa and Resort inside of MontBleu casino. It has a full gym, steam room, sauna, hot tub, indoor heated pool, relaxation room.... THE WORKS!

We have been going ALMOST every day for the past few months. Not bragging on my gym commitment.. which is now the norm (thank you Facebook), because if you see my pictures you can tell I CLEARLY just go for the steam room and hot tub :-)

Anywhooooo

For whatever reason... Sisi and I ALWAYS make friends. People remember us everywhere we go.

It is strange. And we always get recognized when we are out. I guess we just look really approachable. (or maybe if you believe in the law of attraction... we are people people and love intertacting.. so maybe we are drawn to them, or vice versa)

2nd anywhooooo.....

One of the other regulars... we shall just call him Rudity, always finds me and comes and talks to me.

On this occasion, as he sits next to me totally comfortable nude (I guess we are close like that) letting his delicates sway to and fro... He starts telling me about how the people at his work are touchy and a bit mean.

Says since the snow season was so bad, everything is slow and hours are getting cut, etc. So everyone is on edge and being a bit mean lately.

I say "I would fit right in. I am kind of a jerk too". I say that because sometimes I have sort of a ... "trash talking" kind of sense of humor. Anyone who has spoken with me before will know what I am talking about. I think it is tasteful... but of course I am my own biggest fan lol

3rd anywhoooo....

(and here is where it gets interesting)

Rudity replies:

"No, not at all! I like you. You are a really cool guy. You are the whitest black person I have ever met"

o_0

To which I reply... "Thaaaank..................... you?????? Maybe?"

And we laughed, his junk bounced a lil... and we moved on.

Good times at the gym I tells ya.

My question: Have you ever used or heard this phrase? And what exactly does it mean.

Because the more I think about it... my mind goes to a crazy dark place and makes me want to say dumb things lol. So I choose to ignore the voices. So far this main voice has kept me out of trouble so I keep listening.

What's your take? Funny? Rude? Insulting? Meaningless?

hmmmmmmm

Pretty meaningless. He meant it as a compliment. some white people don't know what to say around black people. But believe me, to him...it was a compliment.

A couple decades ago, I was talking to a black woman in a bar, and we were having a good time. She said "You're funny. You're black funny". I took it as a compliment.

I find that insulting. I've been told I'm a; socially awkward, nonathletic, stiff, no street cred, vanilla, Pillsbury Dough Boy Wannabe, with small genitalia and no game......Poindexter

            But too white? Never.

Hey - you guys have your priorities straight...I'd go for the same reason!

Sometimes people say things that make you go "huh?" and that's one of them. Can't tell you how many times I've heard "you're OK for a white girl" and I always chose to take it as a compliment. We don't chose our color -but we can choose our attitude.

You could take offense if that's your "go to" and many people would but I think he meant it as a compliment. Might have been his way of saying "we are alike" and isn't that where we all need to be? It's hard sometimes because many people are so willing to take offense that others awkwardly step on their tongues trying to say something friendly.

Sometimes you have to go beyond the words and look at someone's heart - it's not the PC thing to do but makes for better friends.

Well said!!! My cousin married a black guy and I'm always telling him, 'You are just too cute for your own good!' but I never add "for a black guy," because he's just plain adorable, no matter what color he is. ROFL

yeah he is a funny guy. And as I mentioned, I say some pretty outrageous stuff myself, so I welcome this type of banter most times lol.

We laughed about it... because the idea trying to explain why I was tussling with a grown naked man in the locker room to my wife did NOT sound fun. She already has her suspicions..

At any rate, I just got a new book to make sure stuff like this never happens again

See now? that right there has you pegged. Your hypnotizing (apparently to you) Hawaiian junk bouncer friend has got it right. Only a white person or a white black person thinks you can learn that from a book. When Chapelle has his next draft I know who they are going to pick...lol

Seriously though.....sounded tame..no offense to be taken. Might have grown up in the south and you don't sound "Black" to him. One of my best friends sounds like an Englishman. Tease him about it all the time.

A lot of blacks will use it as an insult to blacks. It THEN has a connotation of appearing white, abandoning ones roots, being an "uncle tom", and a sellout. But that is from a BLACK, so it kind of makes sense.

Meanwhile I am not sure what Kindsvater was talking about.but the opposite would be calling a white person black and among African American's thats basically means - "ignore the skin color he or she totally belongs". Its probably the supreme compliment.

Steve missed Claude's point entirely. People refer to blacks, the black vote etc and are fine. However referring to a persons as "a black" (without adding person) and "the blacks" is usually the phrasing of a racist that defines on the basis of race..

WHITES DON'T ALL THINK ALIKE OR AGREE!

It's TRUE! And YEAH, they might have all come from europe, but europe is a big place and diverse! HECK the black people(see that, I am following your example), may all come from africa, but they aren't necessarily in such agreement either. I could talk about the origins of others in africa, but there are enough troubles just to live down all that happened from what are AT BEST distant cousins of so many hundreds of years ago. In MY case VERY distant cousins, and maybe even in your case.

And people laugh at the hatfields and mccoys feud, again, BOTH WHITE!

                            Hatfield

At least the hatfield and mccoy feud only goes back about 150 years, and they can trace it to one direct ancestor in the same country. HOW ABOUT THAT! The Mccoys were conservative, fighting against slavery, and were poorer, and the hatfields liberal, rich, and likely slave owners! I guess in a way some things never change!

I would never refer to black people as blacks and I don't refer to white people as whites. I rarely ever have to make any type of distinction or clarification based on the skin color of a person. Saying white person, black person, Asian person, etc. just isn't a distinction that I normally feel I need to make when talking about people.

OK, OK! Sorry! I DID see it in the first post. FOR THE RECORD! Colin Powell HIMSELF took offense at the term African American, saying his family wasn't from Africa! He's Jamaican, though he IS often called "African American", even on Wikipedia. And there may be a lot of non dutch and non middle eastern people on here that have never been American and would be offended by that! Notice what I did there? I avoided all but the group I wanted to talk about to get the idea across by saying no terms to describe that group. And I avoided all pronouns, as THEY may be deemed offensive.

HEY, be glad I don't use the C word, though I don't know if I ever have. And for the record, I never used the N word. But I have used the B word, and the AA term. At least your criticism seems honest and helpful.

Funny story. This line actually made me lol for real: "And we laughed, his junk bounced a lil... and we moved on."

Added later: To answer your question though, I would say of the four choices it is funny and that is because of the relationship ( apparently pretty close with the junk and all ) you have with this guy and you being a self described trash talker "jerk" type yourself.

I've never heard that phrase before, but I can relate to you.

I experienced something somewhat similar my sophomore year in high school.

We had a black family move into town and Danny Lee was in my grade. I found him to be sweet, polite and have a great sense of humor. He made me laugh all of the time.

I was quite surprised when he asked me to the upcoming dance but I accepted his invitation. During the first slow dance of the night, he dropped his hands to the small of my back then moved them just a little lower. After doing so, he said, "Terra, you've got a nigga bootie!"

I was taken aback for a second, then replied, "Danny Lee, coming from you, I don't know whether to take that as a compliment or an insult."

He said, "T'aint neither Miss, it's just a fact!"

    LOL!

I still to this day don't know how I feel about that. Whenever the memory arises, I do laugh though.

    Cute . . . for a white guy.

As for your "complement or insult" question - definitely a compliment considering the context, IMO.

Like you, I have NO idea! Frankly, I wouldn't say such a thing. But if he is white, TAKE IT AS A COMPLIMENT! I mean if a black said I was the blackest white, I may be taken aback, but I would take it as a compliment. Why would he say it as an insult?

He COULD mean that you don't sound black like some do, or you are more friendly to him, or who knows what. But it would be dumb if he meant it as an insult.

I have heard the phrase when it spoke about the persons haircut/clothes being like any European, or the language being proper, with relatively little "street slang", or just acting like a normal person, and not having a chip on your shoulder.

As for the statement above where someone said YOU have "ahem" problems. I think it is more likely that THE OTHER guy, that you are talking about and sat right up to you does. He sounds a bit TOO chummy! I'm NOT talking about your respective races, and I will leave it at that. As for ME? I like to keep a comfortable distance, from ALL, except close girlfriends and the like, of course.

This thread is fun. It's enthralling to watch everybody gingerly walk up to "the line," look around warily, touch it, and then run back as fast as they can.

Oh, and James, when in any environment where men are naked, always look everyone directly in the eyes. Nowhere else. Directly. In. The. Eyes. If you're watching something bounce, you've already lost.

I'd like to highlight that I'm pretty sure only Mike can refer to James as "boy".

I BELIEVE! But I have heard THAT term was offensive to you and many people use the misleading term of "people of color".

But HEY, variants of the N word were used earlier as well. Are you saying that past ackronyms constitute current acceptance? If so, why not go back to Samual clemens writings. HECK, he set some notes to be released a few years back, let's go to THOSE!!!!!!!! NOPE, I doubt you want to go THAT far!

Meh...in proper context actually you could (eg..boy you are one funny guy) but generally on this forum? probably (though I think there are more than Just CC and myself here of some African descent)

I'd like to highlight that isn't my fault and its totally natural. Blame it on some other people who used an English word as a derogatory reference. Same goes for some of you guys. You can use expressions I can't. I have to be more careful online about "trash" "red necks" and "hill billies" (but particularly red neck that lots of people use online but should be avoided by an African American). Part of being sensitive to what other stupid people have used the words for.

BTW for what it is worth, I never referred to anyone as boy or girl, and only used MAN in the context of surprise.

I was just throwing that off, not casting an aspersion to your word choice. I'm pretty sure that one, for the most part, has lost its meaning.

Semi-funny story, probably only to me, related to "boy": As a place holder, some people call others dude, chief, captain, etc. My go to, for some reason, has always been brother. I like the inclusion.

Many years ago, when I was just starting my career, I had a black employee. I walked by him and was going to say hello. As I went to say, "what's goin' on, brother," my mind, at the last second, retracted "brother" - maybe he'd be insulted by a white guy calling him brother - again, I was young - and filled the space with boy. I had no idea, until that very second when his eyes got huge, that "boy" was considered derogatory coming from the wrong person.

We laughed about it later, but I was pretty sheepish about it for a while.

My Brother; (This is not a joke)

Maybe 15 years ago, in the Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas, I was speaking at a conference. I was sitting at a bar, and noticed this incredibly beautiful black woman. She was about 6 foot tall, and statuesque. I glanced at her a few times.

She came over and sat down next to me. She asked me a few standard questions, and was very cultured. We talked, and I finally asked, "Do you work here?".

She got angry, and said "You mean because I'm Black? So, Because I'm Black, you assume I have to work here, and I'm not a guest?" She was really upset.

I said, "No. It's that you are just so beautiful. By far, the most stunningly beautiful woman in the place. You don't look like any of the guests, and you are just too amazing to be sitting here, talking to me".

She accepted that, and I found out she was there with her husband, attending the event that I was speaking at...and recognized me, from my photo.

The reason I'm telling you this, is because I was absolutely sure she was a hooker, based on her beauty, the fact that I was in Las Vegas, and the fact that she wanted to talk to me. I sure am glad I didn't ask her.."So, are you a hooker?".

I saw them the next day, and her husband was as amazing as she was. They were from Kenya, I think. Tall beautiful people. And they spoke with (I think) a British accent.

The truth is, I wasn't trying to save myself from the situation. It didn't bother me that she was mad at me. It bothered me that she was mistaken about my intent.

And so I just said what was true. She really was stunning. Maybe Striking is a better word. When I talked to them the next day, they were very polite and friendly.

But I was talking to a thousand vacuum cleaner dealers. In that industry every business owner is a middle aged white conservative man. When you see them from a stage, it's a little jarring. The African couple would have stood out easily, but they weren't there. And they weren't there the next year either. Too bad. They were among the few interesting people there.

When your type doesn't see race get back to me but the continued carping about people being american but also recognizing their ancestry is just lame because the only time you come out to complain is when its African American. The idea that because people recognize their ancestry they are denying in any shape or form their status of American is just silly

P.S. You don't know where I have traveled. That you think you do is entirely in your imagination.

OK, if you are talking about ME, I haven't said anything other than the fact that not all whites are alike, so the idea that anyone doesn't like a given race because it isn't his/her own, it is silly. HECK, I have known people that didn't know WHAT they are! FOR EXAMPLE, I was in an MLM one time, and the guy at the very top even had a brother. They were similar. They had characteristics that hinted at asian, white, and maybe mexican. So WHAT are they? WHO KNOWS? Even THEY said they simply didn't know. It somehow came up and he said it to the general group. HOW can this be? They were anonymously adopted. BTW there were asian, white, and black people there and some were hispanic, etc... I don't think ANYONE cared what they were. The subject likely came up simply because of their appearance. It wasn't bad or anything, just unusual. NOT to equate them to dogs, but it is like an unusual dog in a park, and people keep asking what kind it is.

As for knowing where you have traveled, you are right, but you make similar assessments about others.

If, as some theorize, mankind originated in Africa, I guess we are all African something...
I never really thought about the origination theory as a reminder to end racism.
I know a lot of people who have so many different races and nationalities in their
ancestry that, again, racism does not make sense.

    >>

I am in Colorado and, Denver or rural, I would not refer to a black person as boy.
Maybe 'cause I'm older than Riffle thought, and the awareness is still within me.
Anyway, I don't know that the negative connotation has faded.

    >>

While in my twenties, I worked with some black kids in the District Attorney's
juvenile diversion program. Their parents affectionately called me the n word
sometimes - "N, you have to try this food... LOL Still brings a smile. Both sides
of my ancestry are Russian and Jewish, and immigrated to the US around 1900.

PS - as for the OP, I don't think his intention was to insult, so I would not take it so.
Actually, I think he is saying you two have a good enough relationship that you can
make fun of, josh around with stereotypes and sayings and the colors of each
    others' skin.

(I use the word black because it's never had a negative connotation in my experience
    and use/intention.)

        Ok!

Many look for racism where it isn't. If a white PERSON went to a black PERSON and said "are you the opposite of white", could you imagine the kinds of thoughts they may have associating that with racism? WOW! It really is astounding. People often do things like the pat skit on Saturday night live. On that skit, there is a person always implying that that person is male or female, and people always wonder what.

Whatever you and Seasoned are smoking when you post - my "compliments" to the dealer. He didn't deliver any of his product to me so I can't relate to how you consider something spherical and any color yet metaphysical much less how that goes back to global politics.

Say what? Again I have no idea what you are trying to say but regardless - Skin colors/races do not have opposites. SO I guess to answer your hypothetical question I would consider you racist and probably one of the worst variety (seeing race as a metaphysical issue or defining a metaphysical issue as a "black" would be extreme)....thats not an accusation just answering the hypothetical as best I can figure what you are trying to say given I am not sure you even know.
