My wife shared this with me on Facebook and I have to say, Wow! The benefits of something like this are incredible. I'm trying to find a downside, if there is one.

Thoughts?

Well the video won't play, but l gather it is some solar setup that blows or warms up so no snow will collect on your driveway?

That will benefit colder regions, but here, not really!

I changed the link. The video is on this page. I don't know why that video wouldn't play.

It has a lot of benefits for all regions, hot or cold.

This has been posted here a while back.

It's an awesome idea, the green street/sidewalks is also more appealing than black asphalt and concrete. It could have a lot of advantages If it works on a large scale. Making it easy to recycle would also be a good idea.

BTW, I doubt this new type of road surface would reduce fossil fuels considering it's obviously made from plastic. I imagine bioplastics would quickly break down If exposed to weather & vehicle wear & tear.

No, the atranomical cost it would cost to resurface all the roads means it will never happen...

Everything is expensive when first starting out.

Still, it could happen (eventually) with private businesses & smaller projects.

What they should do is target NASCAR tracks across the entire US, even If it only made a small profit (at first). Free publicity forever... & some awesome racing at night. It would be like one of those 1980 glow in the dark TYCO race tracks, lmao.

Awesome idea. One possible drawback - since they're computerized they could be vulnerable to being hacked. That could possibly pose life-threatening hazards.

Right, the solar one again, just put this over a school crossing and have it malfunction in heavy rain, and that will that!

There's a number of concerns with this. One is the glass will need to be kept very clean so it doesn't block the sun...Not the easiest thing to do for a road.

I think Tesla Motors/Elon Musk's advances in batteries is a much more promising tech. Soon, Tesla won't just be making batteries for cars, they'll make huge banks of batteries that energy companies can use to store vast amounts of electricity that they can generate using solar. These huge battery banks will be able to store the electricity for days, allowing the electricity to be used when the sun might not be shining.

Well, there IS a guy that has a VLOG where he looks at electronics, theory, history, and plans like this. He looked at this plan, and figured it was BUNK! For one, trying to create enough liht to have the functinality they want during the day CAN'T BE DONE! LEDs aren't powerful enough, and there isn't enough power. LINES and the like, like they currently use. HERE are a few good debunkings:

HERE is the guy I referred to:

SO the reasn why you can't see the problem is that you do not realize that it is being debunked ALL OVER! Look at the first amazon kindle. REMEMBER the MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR backstep? It was NOT color! It was NOT an LCD! WHY? They decided that INK was BETTER! YEP, they decided to use INK! It does NOT work like an LCD, or LED, but like an ETCH A SKETCH! They called it electronic ink! Electronic Paper Displays - Readable, Green, Rugged: E Ink

I don't think solar roadways are practical - though I really am interested in solar power.
I would much rather that they made solar power more affordable and convenient for homes - all homes, including apartment buildings, etc. so that everyone's energy costs are reduced -

I can't imagine how that could work - how it could be affordable - or what the cost of maintenance might be.

30 years ago there was a new road paint being tested....it was white and looked like regular paint used to put a stripe down the middle and on the edge of roads.

BUT - this paint glowed/reflected light from headlights at night. On a dark, rainy might, you could SEE where the lanes in the road easily.

I haven't seen this paint used anywhere for years....too expensive, I was told. If paint used only as "lines" to improve road safety it too expensive....replacing entire roadways is a pipe dream.

And WOW, you should have seen in 2006. Because of a change in technology, people DIED of a roof collapse! Big Dig ceiling collapse - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia And there were the ceiling fans, etc.... On shows like, this old house, they speak of people building bathrooms and not accounting for the weight of the fixtures and/or water and/or people. TODAY, most of the road is STRUCTURAL with a relatively light covering. Even THEN, many roads can't handle normal traffic, so they do things to reduce the rate, number of vehicles, or type of vehicles. Still, this new proposal will add several pounds of NON structural weight per square foot. One wonders how THAT will affect the street safety, And the CURRENT covering is self leveling, and tolerates grades well etc. GLASS is NOT,and does not! That means they will have to have a BASE coating that is not only flat, but LEVEL. That means redesigning roads, having different technologies for transitions, or something different.

So YEAH, there are a LOT of things people aren't even talking about yet.

In our lifetimes at least. You're old enough to remember when mobile phones were the stuff of science fiction, and a complete pipe dream.

None of us can predict how technology will develop even in the near future, so never say never.

The way I see this developing is that with the advent of driverless cars, new types of roads will need to be built, so why couldn't the technology in this be incorporated at the same time along with all sorts of other things that we can't even imagine at this stage in time.

All things are possible, but as I said in the beginning, this ain't gonna happen in our lifetimes. Beyond that... ?

Looking down the road a piece, it's not hard to see with what delight
our national security establishment would fashion this into a system that
empowered it to monitor and control the movement of every single
            vehicle on the nation's highways.

My uncle runs a motorway re surfacing company, my mum had a car park for her business resurfaced. This is probably about 100m by 100m car park. The cost of the job come in at £40,000 and that was as cost because of family. Other companies were quoting 55-65k for the job. That is just a 100x100m square car park, now imagine the cost for doing that for a town?? Then you need to repair the material when it breaks, also, if it breaks, there are no road markings. It's an unattainable project since every road would need to be dug up, levelled etc... The idea of a drive less car is to work on the environment as it is now, there's no point doing seperate roads for the cars as it won't get funding for it.

I won't pretend to know the problems getting something like this implemented. But it sure is a hell of a pitch.
And after all, we've sliced through mountains to create roads. So, it's not like this is impossible, but really really expensive.

Won't know until a comprehensive cost/benefit analysis is completed. This type of project needs to be viewed as an investment in the future , not simply an expenditure without return.

We already have solar so that's not going to be the major expense. The expense will be the brute force labor (digging and laying the road to spec). The question is, what material do they have to use for the road itself to be able to survive the environment with cars running over it all day. If it's cheap material, the bottom line might be surprisingly doable.

I love this. I have often wondered why there is no national push toward making all new roofing in construction or remodels with solar panel technology.

I think the way in to something like this would be similar... all new roads or road repairs should incorporate solar panel tech. Then with those inroads made (pun intended), there might be more motivation to fill in gaps or improve whole neighborhoods at a time.

So many people complain that projects like this are too big to be realistic. So was the original creation of the federal highway system. Not to mention putting a man on the moon, the aforementioned Panama Canal, the Great Society and many other examples that could be dredged up.

Imagine a society where solar technology became the norm - where everything we build is naturally designed to capture and deliver as much energy as it possibly can.

The infrastructure built coupled with the inevitable leaps in technology and efficiency could truly be transformational.
