I watched the first 4 episodes of Daredevil on Netflix.

The best "Superhero" show out there. Like CSI, but with masks.

Anyone watch it? What did you think?

I don't know about "Better". But it's a different kind of show I personally like it better.

To my ear, Arrow is full of irritating dialog...where every conversation is an emotional blowup.

But they are both Amazing shows.

Gotta satisfy that CW demo with the angst quota...

But the action does make up for it.

I got DD queued up and ready to go... probably before the weekend.

Tonight is Flash with my kid, and I still have to get through last night's Gotham and Scorpion, not to mention tomorrow's Arrow before the way is cleared for what is sure to be a Daredevil binge.

Who the hell has time to work?

You'll want to set aside at least 8 hours for Daredevil. You won't want to stop. It just seems so..real. The action is grounded (like Arrow), and the casting is dead on,. (again, like Arrow)

Yeah, Arrow is one of the best shows (in my opinion). But every time anyone speaks, it's the end of the world. And their emotional development stopped at 14. That's just an opinion. But I'm more sensitive to it than most, I think.

So, what you are saying, if I can read between the lines, is that Felicity Smoak should be seen and not heard? Am I getting that right?

I don't watch the show. However, I take "Felicity" to be the name of a female. If that's the case, then the answer to your question is Yes.

I tried watching the show when it first came on to no avail. First, I'm predetermined to hate all things DC. (The Marvel fan-boy in me is relentless.) Second, and much to my chagrin, I have to...ag...agr....ugh...agree with Claude, there's just too much teen angst and mellow drama for me.

I'm going to check out DD, though. Matt Murdock's never been a favorite of mine, but I'll give it a shot. Maybe then Claude will stop with his incessant emails and pm's "Did you watch it yet, huh, huh, did you watch it?!!!?!?"

I know you're joking....but no. For example, Daredevil has several female leads..and they all have great dialog, that moves the story forward. On Arrow (again, just an opinion)...it seems that every time a woman speaks, she is having a breakdown.

it's that the writers are creating lots of tension...where none would really exist, if it was real life. Smallville used to be like that. And Buffy The Vampire Slayer (and Angel) were really like that. Many shows on the CW Network, seem to be written by a talented manic-depressive teenage girl. Grimm is kind of like that.

And again, I think I'm more sensitive to that than most.

Yeah, Arrow sets a pretty high bar. Flash is pretty good too, in a family friendlier sort of way. My 11-year-old and I make a point of watching that one together every week.

I am really liking the way superheroes have come back in such a big way.

Arrow has an incredible cast. Whoever picked it did a stellar job not the least of which was casting Rickards as Felicity who was originally just supposed to have a very small role. They take risks and will go just about anywhere outside of killing the lead character (due to fans Felicity and Diggle are close to untouchable as well).

Flash? looked like they might be able to mix it up in the time travel episode but as expected they walked almost everything back in the new timeline which made it mostly a big tease.

Grant Gustin was an excellent choice to play The Flash. But I think Tom Cavanagh really makes that show.

Yeah, he does whine more than a normal man. But as The Flash...he whines at the speed of sound.

That was a joke. We all speak at the speed of sound...or nobody would hear us.

He absolutely sucks. Ask Jack....... with that face when he goes to mush on his unrequited love you want to slap him and send him to counselling......lol. The episode after the time travel when he is sure his love is requited was downright painful to watch.

I got to admit though I don't like cliche characters (I'll try to weather past the playboy with comedic friend one (which has been done to death) in DD which initially turned me off) she plays the best bombshell/geek I've seen for quite sometime.

I watched the last few episodes of Daredevil last night. I think there is greatness at points in the series. The last half hour of the last episode was as good as The Dark Knight.

It was so good, I don't think you have to be a Superhero fan to appreciate it.

Is violence graphic if you can't see it? Speaking only of the first episode, most of the time I couldn't tell who was kicking who's ass due to poor lighting. I get that DD is supposed to be dark, but at least give me enough light to see what's happening.

Additionally, the choppy, Bourne-esque fight scenes are getting old. Can I please get more seconds per frame so I know what's going on? At the current speed, it just looks like two guys having a slap fight.

You idiot! You need to feel the fight scenes ...using the Force. The Batman fights scenes are like that too. No idea why.

It actually does get better and better. The last few episodes really pay off.

I watched the first episode and liked it. I'm going to watch a couple more to see if I get hooked. I'm not hooked yet. Though two of my Marvel comic collecting buddies told me it gets better and better.

The fight scenes are well-choreographed. I think it was an auspicious beginning.

Watched it. Marginally better. It seems like a second tier broadcast channel show. It seems like something Fox or CBS would put on at 10pm Friday nights and burn it off after a season or two. I expect better from Netflix and Marvel, especially after the raving reviews. This show, however, is exactly what I would have expected before Marvel got its collective shit together.

They have a really crappy way of showcasing Davedevil's abilities. I get it. He can hear people's heartbeats. Got it. Seriously. And for a man with super-enhanced agility and reactions, he sure gets beat on by normal humans an awful lot. This is supposed to be a guy who can, on occasion, best Spider-Man (which I always thought was bs, but I digress). Instead, he's getting worked over like a side of beef by a bunch of jabronis.

Remember the Nightman TV show from the late 90's? This show is the modern version of it.

I'll finish the season, but I'll probably complain the entire way through.

I remember Nightman...and he remembers me.

This is Daredevil's beginning. He gets more Daredevilish as the series progresses.

My only real complaint is the way they depict his "radar sense". It's just like the way we see, except a tad fuzzy at the edges. I think that's lazy. The opening shows invisible scenes coming to life, as though they are being covered by red paint. Almost the way I always imagined that Daredevil "saw".

Imagine if you were Matt Murdock, in real life. You have his enhanced senses...some training... could you beat Spiderman? No. Not even close. You would get wounded, beaten, maybe killed. I think it's a very adult depiction of Daredevil.

The last half of the series you see more gymnastics...more like the comics. I promise, it's worth it.

And I disagree about Nightman. This is a far better series. I think Charlie Cox is perfectly cast as Daredevil.

An aside; When I was in High School, I tried several versions of the Billy Club. I really wanted to make one that worked. I even had one made from brass, with a Super-ball (remember those?) cut in half, and each half glued to each end. I tried throwing it...and catching it. Two problems; it wouldn't bounce at all, unless it was hitting a very hard object, like a concrete floor....and I had no idea how to control it. In other words, I could have killed myself with it.

And have a cord come out of it to swing on? I think that's a fantasy what would never work in the real world. It never got off the drawing board.

I really wanted to be Daredevil, when I was a teenager.

On a raw comparison, you're correct. DD is better. However, TV has changed. When rated against their contemporaries, it's basically the same show, in my opinion: something maybe worthy of broadcast TV or possibly in syndication on WGN or TBS.

Just finished episode four. I kinda like where they're going with Fisk, but they might be humanizing him too much.

I have to admit, though, that I've never really been a DD fan. I always assumed he was just around to champion the ADA.

Claude, here's a show that represents the quality I'm expecting of these non-broadcast, non-cable channels. If you like crime drama, I highly recommend it:

I wanted to be Superman when I was six too. But I still wanted to put on a costume and "fight crime" until I was about 17 or 18.

Of course, I never told anyone, back then. And, of course, the idea was/is ludicrous.....

But that doesn't mean I didn't want to do it.

You know how guys have arsenals in their home...just in case? They would never go out on a shooting spree. But ...that one in a billion chance that they needed an arsenal...in their fantasy..they would be ready. Those guys?

Well, if I wasn't married, and was maybe 25 years younger?

I talked to a Titanium fabricator in town several years ago. I asked what it would cost to make a titanium shield, like Captain America. It would have been over $5,000. I seriously considered it......just to hang on my wall......"just in case".

The wife wouldn't go for it. Another fantasy quashed.

And during that time, if a teenager wanted to be a daredevil, most normal teenage boys were dreaming of being Evil Knievil, not a comic book character.

I've read two books and many articles about people that actually put on a costume..and "fight crime". Yes, they are out there, maybe 200.

One in particular, Phoenix Jones is a real MMA fighter (not a bad one either), and really gets into fights...and gets arrested...and has stopped a few burglaries and carjackings. He's as close to the real deal as there is.

Most just help the homeless and occasionally call the police to report crimes. When I read these stories, I laugh, and feel sorry for some...a few are mentally ill, a few are slow learners.

But there is still a very small part of me, way back in the darkness of my mind...that envies them.

My wife watched the last episode with me, and liked it OK. Later, she saw the first episode, and was bored to tears.

Maybe you really have to be a Daredevil fan, to like this. But it got great reviews.

My second sitting, I stayed up until 3:30 in the morning. I fell asleep during the second to last episode. So the next night I watched them. The further into the series, the better. The last episode is by far the strongest. Some real Daredevil action...and Kingin is at his most Powerful. Fisk gives a short speech, that I would love to memorize.

I felt kind of bad that Daredevil dies at the end, but what the heck.

I'm kidding. But he does find out that Fisk is his real father.

I'm kidding. Did you know this is going to tie into the series The Defenders? With Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones.

Just finished the season late last night (I had some business trips that interfered with the binge).

It was great to see Scott Glen (as Stick) pop up in there. He looks great - I hadn't seen him in such a long time that I figured he was out of the game.

Also I didn't realize that was Fisk was played by Vincent D'Onofrio - he sure looks different than he did back in the day. He really consumed the character.

The fighting got better and better, the story really drew me in, and by the end I was wanting more - a lot more.

I am very excited for season 2. A whole friggin year from now.

    Great recommendation Claude. Thanks.

      .
On your say so I will forge ahead . I pretty much gave up at four. Up to that point it seemed to me the only thing that really distinguished it was that it was dark and fascinated with blood which I admit is different for the genre but meh.....not enough to wow me especially since it seemed to be borrowing form Arrow and the whole save the city by destroying it story line.

Still won't be the first series to pick it up later so I'll watch some more.

I'll send you my disclaimer for e-signing in the morning.

Hey, worst case scenario, you got a solid viewing experience out of it. Even if it is not love, you could do a whole lot worse.

I am going to try Bosch next.

Jack, you're free to like DareDevil more. You're always free to be wrong.

Seriously, though, I think you'll like it. Obviously, it's not a superhero show, and not quite as dark, but it has good pacing, a strong lead character, and reminds me a little of True Detective.

I loved watching True Detective. The main thing I liked is that I always imagined that Daredevil would eventually show up.

I'm surprised there isn't a supervillain by that name. He looks like a little German man, but grows stronger as bad things happen to his enemies, thus he seeks world domination by creating havoc. And he eats smelly food in public because he knows everyone around him hates it. His kryptonite, so to speak, are selfless acts of kindness.

Added later: Looks like there is such a villain:

There was a very random Avenger who had a similar power. He got kinda rapey. I can't remember his name. I'll look for it later.

I watched the first two episodes of Bosch this morning on an airplane.

Very promising. You should have lead with the fact that it stars the Comcast B2B guy. I really relate to him...

I will say this... it did a better job of drawing me in than Daredevil did at the same point in the series, before DD redeemed itself later on.

I am excited to continue on.

We get to see Mimi Rogers' T&A in episode 2. She looks amazing for how old she must be by now.

I must correct this... now that I am not watching it on a tablet, it is obvious that this is not Mimi Rogers. She actually is old now. Mimi is not the girlfriend, she is the prosecutor. Makes much more sense this way.

I am a bit more than halfway through the season now, btw. Got a chuckle out of the actor they chose for Bosch's ex-wife's new husband. Anybody here watch Banshee?

I've never seen Banshee, but the girlfriend was on season 8 of 24 and is currently on The Vampire Diaries (I know Claude already knows this...). I don't normally go for the highly-freckled, but she has a certain quality.

Of course, I feel this way about most shows unless we're talking about GoT or TWD.

Oh, and never thank Claude for anything, Jack. In his mind that constitutes a contractual agreement. He'll show up on your doorstep in the middle of some rainy night wearing nothing but bubble wrap and holding a shovel.

The fighting got better and better, the story really drew me in, and by the end I was wanting more - a lot more.

I am very excited for season 2. A whole friggin year from now.

      Great recommendation Claude. Thanks.
You show a sophisticated take on Daredevil. A far more intellectual response than from say, your average Riffle.

I learned a long time ago that wielding an ice pick while wearing only bubble wrap was a bad, bad idea. Made doubly bad if it was early in the morning or there were half-naked supermodels with me.

I know you said you don't want to talk about it, but I have one serious question that I just have to ask: why were the supermodels wearing so much clothing?

Good question. It gets complicated, but I'm sure you'll be able to follow along.

Notice, I said the complicating factors were early morning, OR half-naked supermodels.

Remember the shrinkage issue from Seinfeld? (stupid question, I know you do)

If it is cold, the prickly early morning issue resolves itself quickly

Yet, when it is cold, the supermodels have to wear something. Otherwise they get whiny and their looks are no longer sufficient on their own to keep me interested. Sort of like what often happens in Arrow.

Do I need to draw a diagram?

Claude; "Are you going to talk?"

              We should have a drinking game. We'll watch Arrow, and take a shot every time a female character;
              A) Insists on going on an absolutely suicidal mission.
              B) Asks someone to kill them.

To start off I should disclose that I've never been into super-heroes that much. I've always preferred anti-heroes myself.

Prime examples of anti-heroes are Eddie Fitzgerald from the UK version of Cracker (still my favourite TV show of all time), Francis Urquhart from the UK version of House of Cards, Anthony Soprano, and more recently, Walter White from Breaking Bad.

Since we can now legally access Netflix Down Under, I gave this show a go. The first episode did nothing to convert me into a superhero fan, but watched the next couple to see how it developed. It's worh a watch, but still not really my cup of tea.

I'll probably watch the rest of the series in due course, but I've found that binge viewing Arrested Development is a better use of my spare time. How this show never built anything more than a cult following is beyond me. Perhaps it was too clever for the average TV viewer. One of the best comedies ever made, and of course every character in the show is an anti-hero of sorts.

    ok, I just finished Bosch.

    How do I feel? Respected.

Good solid show. Intelligent. Satisfying. Mature. Well worth the watch. I look forward to the next installment.

Better than Daredevil? I would say they are two totally different experiences. Remember, DD is a comic book, Bosch is based on a series of novels. Two totally different mediums and different ways of telling a story.

Now that they are both behind me, I am excited to finish Arrow this week and Flash next week.

    What's next?

I have to agree with my furry little friend. True Detective is fantastic story.

The Mathew McConaughey character sounds like he just spent a week with Riffle, and now wants to kill himself.....and it really is a great story.

My wife is a good cook but always cooks 4 times the amount than we need. And no, I don't want to eat it again tomorrow as leftovers or the day after that. I can measure out precise portions for a meal for 2, why can't she.

Most of what she cooks is ok, sometimes excellent, but sometimes it's just strange tasting. Not what my non american palate likes. Sometimes though, her little experiments fail. I'm afraid I don't stand on ceremony then.

you know... I have it. And I started to watch it, but I fell asleep halfway through the first episode. I took that as an omen, and put it aside.

In all fairness to the show, it probably had little to do with the show and everything to do with how late I was up watching it.

        I'll give it another chance.

It was a reflex. Your brain told you, "Riffle recommended this, so it must be boring as hell"...and you just went to sleep. The same thing happened when I had lunch with Riffle.

I went to lunch with him, and the next thing you know, I'm waking up in the back seat of his car, with my underwear inside out.

Why the hell do I always have to be the one to keep this incredibly important thread on track?

I just finished True Detective (and just in time for season 2, apparently).

Great performances, great story. They handled all the time jumping masterfully, and the relationships were really compelling.

    But...

Am I the only one who had trouble keeping up with all of the details and complexities? It felt a bit too overwhelming trying to keep everything straight. After a while, it just became easier to let go and take things on faith that I would normally feel motivated to make sure I followed.

Is it just me, or was this one about 20% too big for the medium?

I am headed to New Orleans for the week on Monday. Unless I find something better, I'll be taking season 1 of Constantine on the flight with me.

Pretty much gave up on Daredevil as I wasn't impressed with the first half of it. In a rare moment of boredom fired it up again two nights ago and watched some more

Sure enough it got better - a lot better. The writers forget about trying to be dark and violent and concentrate on story and character. By the last four episodes it gets pretty darn good. Whereas I started out not being a fan I am really looking forward to the next season.
Its kind of opposite of what happened with me and "Falling Skies" which started out great and ended on a dud note.

Falling skies lost me after 3 episodes...

Constantine, I struggled to get through all 13 episodes. Had I not known it was over with season 1, I probably would have given up on it sooner. But I figured what the hell, I would soldier through and see everything they put out here. Biblical fantasy just didn't do it for me.

But Mr. Robot, which just ended it's first season on Wednesday, that was REALLY good. Nice and complex, adult, a bit dark and very relevant to the times (they even got a timely Ashley Madison hack reference in...)

If anyone is looking for something to watch, go find that one.

Oh, and Rick and Morty. Funniest show on tv.

I avoided that one as the promos didn't do anything for me. I'll queue it up after we finish the first season of Fargo. Could be a while though, with football season here. (Go Bucks!)

BTW, Jack: DO NOT watch the second season of True Detective. Same murky plotting as the first season, but without ANY redeeming quality whatsoever. Absolutely dreadful. Every scene ended with a character spewing some dreadful bit a dialogue and staring blankly into the distance. Awful.

For some reason, we lost interest in Falling Skies, after the first two seasons.

I liked Constantine enough to watch it. The actor in the lead was fun.

But The Strain keeps me interested. And I can't wait for the series Heroes Reborn.

And I have every Archer episode recorded. My God, is that a funny show. Animated adult comedies are my favorite. Family Guy, Bob's Burgers, South Park, all are hilarious.

Yeah, I gave up on it about 5 episodes in. When I would rather lurk on WF than start a show, that is a sure sign it has lost me.

No, it really didn't. It has just gotten progressively worse. I wish I had given up on it when you did. But I couldn't.

True story... my dying brother told me to watch that show, back when it was still pretty good. Since he is gone, as bad as it has gotten, I feel like he would have wanted me to stick it out. It is almost like that one final thing we are doing together.

How messed up is that? At least he could have picked a better show to get me tethered to...

Anyway, my sentence is almost over, thank goodness. He also got me to watch Farscape, so all is forgiven.

P.S. If any sci-fi fans missed Farscape, do yourself a favor and find it.

Not even remotely messed up. Could be the worse show in the history of television that would make it a sentimental favorite for all time for me.

                  .
Not messed up at all. I eat butter pecan ice cream, because my father liked it, and it reminds me of him. I used to buy Fords..just because he used to work for Ford. It's a way to remember someone you loved....and maybe keep their memory more alive.

I'm the same way. I bought Fords for years because of my dad.

BTW, don't you have work to do?

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

Daredevil was great. Both myself and my wife were impressed with the writing, characters, action, story progression. It ties into the comics well to. I'm looking forward to the next season and the other Netflix series that tie in to it.

    Daredevil is absolutely killer.

The only bad part, was that it was a TAD cheesy. (Just the idea of a blind dude wrecking everyone).

    Stick was an absolute badass.

I give the show an easy 9.5 out of 10... I can't wait for future marvel releases on Netflix, which are slated to be numerous. The dude who played "Shane" from the walking dead is going to play "The Punisher". That should be totally marvelous. Shane > Rick.

    PS:

I was sad when Fisk's right hand man got eliminated. I thought he was neat. (I have a bad tendency to show sympathy for supervillains).

Bosch also dropped it's 2nd season this week.

I've got them both, but my family has conspired to keep me from bingeing on either yet.

Be prepared for a moderate letdown from Bosch. I'm over halfway and it's good, but not near the caliber of the first season. Like John Sandford's Prey novels, the show switched from the serial killer genre to more of a standard police procedural.

There's also a second plot line unrelated to Bosch that takes considerable time away from the main character. Unfortunately, this plot line is actually more engaging than Bosch's.

Did you ever watch The Wire?

The first season was amazing, tightly focused on the good guys (cops) and the bad guys (drug dealers).

They did not wrap everything up in a tidy little bow at the end of season one, and that left some fertile ground to allow the story to evolve in season two.

But, that was not quite enough, and they added a whole third set of characters (the dock worker's union) with a new crime to solve, all while they were still grappling with the consequences of season one's events. Lo and behold, it took quite a while for it to become clear that there was any connection between any of season one's bad guys and any of season two's bad guys.

Season three, they didn't add new bad guys, they broadened out their focus to include the school system, along with season one's continuing saga and a little bit of season two's leftover business. It was truly amazing to see the ways they were able to tie it all together.

By season four they finally wrapped up most of season one's business, but the effects of that resolution had consequences that were definitely still playing out across all of the storylines. They kept up with that, while broadening their focus to include not only the drug dealers and the schools, but politics and the media.

The first few episodes of each season were disappointing in the moment, because they gave less time to the subjects we were still excited about. But as each season started to unveil its secrets and all of the intertwined storylines became clearer, it was a very satisfying experience.

Maybe Bosch will get there, maybe not. I'll let you know my thoughts when I get there.

I fully accept that from a show titled The Wire. Title the show after one character and I expect that character to be the focal point.

I keep waiting for the two story lines to converge, but it feels more like they just needed to fill space due to the weaker Bosch story line.
