Want to see my turtle?

I was cleaning up the ol' hard drive and came across this clip I took six years ago...

The turtle (and the monkey) have grown considerably since. I bet he wishes he had Terra's backyard.

He's an African sulcata tortoise, though he seems pretty fond of snow.

I know there's a few animal lovers in the room and I thought you might enjoy this clip.

Lovely turtle ... and child. Pretty strong turtle to carry around a little boy like that.

I think the tortoise was trying to buck him off That's really cute.

The name "Wrex" caught me. My shephard/dane I had for 13 years was named Wrex.

When my son and I agreed on a name he was thinking "rex" and I was thinking "wrecks" - so we compromised.

He is a strong turtle. It's why we named him Wrex. Can't leave him unattended in the backyard or he'll completely wreck the place, including probably breaking through the sliding doors.

His old living quarters, I had him fenced in with a 2x4 anchored to a planter I built myself. The planter was about 3'x3'x2'. Must have weighed 200+ lbs filled with dirt. Wrex wedged himself under the 2x4 fence and lifted and smashed the planter to the ground repeatedly until it smashed to pieces and he made his way out climbing over the mountain of dirt.

He then broke through two fences and camped out in a neighbor's yard two houses down.

You shouldn't have said "no" when asked to go camping.

I can't imagine trying to contain and control a large tortoise. I can tell my dog to sit/stay and she does. I can say "drop it" or "no" and she'll stop what she's doing and look at me.

I expect you could yell your head off and Wrex would just keep turtling down the street. What do you do - lay a trail of food to get him back home?

As long as his enclosure is big and strong enough (which it seems to be for the moment), he's perfect.

When we take him out, which isn't very often, he's actually amazingly easy to control. You just need a person on either side of him and he'll walk exactly where you guide him. We took him to a park once and walked for almost an hour, almost non-stop. We just decided where to make a u-turn at some point and walked him right back to the car.

It's if he stops and decides he doesn't want to move is when we've got a problem.

            He is too cool!

I'm gonna have to get me one of them after I get my puppy, of course.

I already have cranes, egrets, ducks, cray fish, frogs and gold fishies, but I need one of those too, lol!

I think If the turtle was meant to have a jockey on his back he'd be in the 8 o'clock at Belmont Park.

I hope you get that puppy soon, Terra. We've got a Maltese and I love her like she's one of my kids.

Interestingly, the wildlife at my place on busy Long Island isn't too different from what's in your backyard.

Besides Wrex and Pearl (or "Whirly" as she prefers), there's...

Smokey, our African Grey. About 10 years ago, we found him walking across the street as I almost hit him with the car. I thought he was a pigeon.

Lenard, our American Tree Frog. Found him in the laundry room of the house we were staying at on vacation in Maryland last year. Since my son's hermit crab, who we took along on the trip just died, and we had an empty carrier with us, Lenard came home with us (and couldn't be happier or fatter.)

A tropical fish tank and two betta bowls.

And on any given night, we'll have opossum, raccoons, cats or rabbits swing by the back yard and pay Wrex a visit.

I wonder... if every animal on earth, insects included, all banded together to take down the humans, who would win?

I've had a couple of smaller turtles in the pond.

We keep discovering new wildlife on the property every day.

Just this morning right after I woke up, I looked out the window and there were two deer drinking at the edge of the pond. It was really very beautiful to watch.

And back in the woods, there is some creature that sounds like a monkey, but obviously isn't. My two year old grandson heard it the other day and said, 'Wolf, Nana!" Haha!

Hubby thinks it's a pilated woodpecker because after those "Hoots and Whoops", he insists he hears pecking.

I'm thinking we have our own Sasquatch, lol!

That's my kind of paradise. You missed my last question - about how much do you think Wrex weighs?

Here in NV the wild life is K9 (coyotes mostly), small animals like rabbits, ground squirrels, a variety of rodents, and

lizards --- a LOT of lizards all over the place...a few deer, and we have a lot of wild horses that like to come up and graze on lawns this time of year. I've heard we have bobcats, and it's the right terrain, but I haven't seen one yet.

Serious? How long could we last against a planet of animals? We wouldn't make it past the insects.

        Lenard, our American Tree Frog.

That's one of the things I will miss most after relocating.....I loved the dozens of tree frogs I had in the south. I had a high, long window in my living room with slightly frosted glass to diffuse morning sun. At night that glass a playground for lizards and tree frogs who gathered on the outside of the window to catch the bugs attracted by the light in the room.

I miss hearing tree frogs but I guess I'll have to get used to bull frogs on the pond nearby.

The turtle (and the monkey) have grown considerably since. I bet he wishes he had Terra's backyard.

He's an African sulcata tortoise, though he seems pretty fond of snow.

I know there's a few animal lovers in the room and I thought you might enjoy this clip.

Not that it is not cute.. but as a new member I would like to know how warriorform minimizes the unrelated topics? Is not this topic unrelated ??

Of course - 'unrelated' is what goes on in this section...that's why it's called "off topic forum".

You somehow made it to the Off Topic forum without realizing that it meant it was for Off Topic posts. All the spam and barely coherent posts are in the other forums. I'm sure you must have noticed that there are other forums?

Suzanne; Don't make Woopshop angry. You wouldn't like him when he's angry.

Oh gee - he looks a lot sturdier than he did in the first pic. I used to have a couple turtles when I was a kid. They are great pets. Wrex is awesome!
