Does Your Head Explode At Night?

Head exploding syndrome does not just happen to me, happens to a lot of people. I get all sorts of different loud noises in my head ( just one per episode fortunately ) which are usually triggered if I have stayed up too late and just about to go to sleep. Not a life ruiner but it happens from time to time.

If you spend so much time thinking about or talking to Claude what else did you expect to happen?

(Interesting stuff though . Never heard about this.)

If I'm very tired, as I'm falling asleep, I hear a loud Bang (like a shotgun going off in the room), and the sensation that my heart just took a beat about 100 times harder than it should. No idea what causes it. I ignore it and go to sleep.

I seem to remember reading that it's an inherited response, a survival mechanism. I've had it all my adult life. It doesn't happen every night.

I don't think this is exactly what the article is talking about. But I suspect it's what you are talking about.

What if they're not stars? What if they are holes poked in the top of a container so we can breath?

Correct, thats what I'm referring too, the article seems to be talking about something more severe. The sounds I hear seem very real, varied and loud but don't make me leap out of bed, thats reserved for earthquakes or genuine explosions. This has only been happening for the past year, relatively new to me.

Yeah, the sound is very real, and very loud. I think my heart is exploding...but the instant I wake up, the noise is gone, and the heartbeat is normal. The noise lasts no more than an instant. The first few times I heard it, I thought it was real, and was amazed that it didn't wake up my wife.

I hope I don't get that. I would think I was having a stroke (since I have no idea what those are like)

It all depends if your brain was mixing in an attack of chronic wind and making another sound out of it in your mind. I have no idea if a bad smell can wake people up either. I'm sure studies have been done.

I have often been woken from a dream by a sound which my brain has incorporated into it, such as a load of seagulls screeching.

Why you have gathered a load of seagulls in your bedroom...is your own business. It must be a British thing.

The ones from Mark where you laugh, grimace, grit your teeth, grin, and moan...all at the same time...are the best.

I thought he was going to say something like, "The seagulls are in the bedroom, because that's where we flock".

Ah so you googled and found the pictures of the tasty snack we Brits toast for tea and then clicked on the Urban Dictionary definition?

                              Come to think of it....

Wow. This exact thing happened to me once, and only once, when I was a pre-teen. I thought someone lit an M-80 firecracker outside my window (despite the fact I lived on the 10th floor.) I was baffled how it didn't wake my brother, who slept in the same room as me.

It was a very memorable experience, and it's interesting to find out now that it's a "thing".

I've had noise in a dream wake me up before - but nothing like what you are describing here. That would be extremely scary, I would think.

The first few times it bothered me, because I didn't know what it was. Within a second, I would be thinking: Is it a heart attack? Is it an explosion? a gun firing?

It really makes me think I'm having a heart attack, because there is a hard "Thumping" in my chest. But the sensation, and thought...last for far less than a second. To me, it's just a curious thing that happens. I do notice that it only happens when I'm laying horizontally (not falling asleep in my recliner), and face up. It doesn't happen when I'm on my side.

I'm not trying to start something here...but if I weren't...well... me, I would swear that someone is hitting me in the chest.

Yes, Claude it is called rymthomic.....something, (too lazy to look it up) basically means your heart speeds up for no good reason then eventually slows down.

I had a friend who had it, and l do get it as well, but l find that if you breath deeply a few times it stops it!

I also know that it does increase the chances of heart attack, not by much but it does, (a lot of people have this, well not the heart attack).

Meditation or sitting still, can reduce or possibly eliminate this!

I usually hear a loud noise in my head if l am too tired, and my brain is getting nasty about it. If you hear a loud noise, like a door banging it is a good indication that your brain needs rest and it is time for bed.

Phew, tempted to say something whitty, but l won't.

          Shane;
No. It's not a rapid heart beat. It's one single thump in the chest, along with a very loud Bang. I'm instantly awake, and my heart isn't beating fast. It only happens the instant I am falling asleep, never during sleep.

My brain may be causing my heart to beat hard once. But it may also just be the loud noise I think I hear, and I may be associating it with my chest. It also may just be happening in my inner ear. No real idea.
