If so then can you give me some advice or tell me what they asked you in a interview? Because I have a job interview tomorrow for overnight stock at Wal-Mart. It's my first ever interview and I don't want to choke and fail! What Interview questions will be asked?

Here's a tip. Have a couple beers before you go- not so much that you give out the smell, just enough to calm ya nerves.

I haven't had an interview at wal mart, but......

    1. GO IN CLEAN AND SOBER! DON'T do what WC suggested!
    2. Have decent credit, none is probably OK, and a decent past. They MAY check, and it is getting VERY common!
    3. If you don't know the area, business, industry, learn a bit.
4.If you are male, it would be nice to go with a suit, though it is likely OK here to go with just casual clothes, but no jeans, shorts, or bright colors.

As for questions? They could be ANYTHING! Some, companies, even give you tests. The tests might be on basic things like math, your personality and ethics, and they may schedule some fluid test to determine how clean and sober you are. ALSO, many questions may be OPEN ENDED! They have no set answer. Just be calm, articulate, and try to answer honestly.

Since this IS a NIGHT STOCKING job, and your first interview, you may not have a hard time with this at all. If you don't have much competition, you might walk out with a job. ANOTHER thing! Realize that the WHOLE thing might be an interview! From the moment you stop the car, to the moment you hit the street again, treat it ALL like an interview. It could be some time before they let you know you have the job. I was on a job one time where the head of that ENTIRE branch once fired a woman SIGHT UNSEEN!!!!!!! He didn't even know who she was! WHY was she fired? Because she parked in a handicapped parking space! I never thought to ask, but it could have been HER first day!

    Anyway, GOOD LUCK!

      1) WC didn't say get battered but some people get nervous and a shot of whiskey or something helps some people get over them nerves.

      2) Not sure why bad credit effects getting a job but I suppose it is the USA. I always thought the point of getting a job was to get out of or remain out of bad credit .

      3) Solid, sound advice and probably the most important thing you can do.

      4) Go in a suit, or smart office attire, make the effort, stand out from the average bum which goes there. (Females also have suits, just saying )

Well, MANY places, in the US, now check credit and background.

        3) Solid, sound advice and probably the most important thing you can do.
YEP! Sometimes it makes a BIG difference.

Women ARE given more options, regardless of what they think.

      5. And for God's sake clean up that FB page or tell them you do not have one or better yet just completely delete your Personal Timeline there if you have one

GOOD POINT, but why direct it at me, etc? I don't really have a facebook page. I have one ONLY to get a premium from a merchant, but it is just a ghost.

Directed at you ? No, it was a generic comment.I was saying in general anyone that has a FB page needs to go clean it up as employers can look at it

Congratulations! I don't care what anyone here says - getting a job is a big deal. Regular income is good. IN the future you may be an internet gazillionnaire like some people 'upstairs' dream about - in the meantime you can afford food and you are being responsible for yourself. Kudos.

Wal-Mart has also raised there minimum wage to 9.00 but where I'm night stock I saw that I can earn 10.34 says there is a premium so I'm not sure.
Many businesses pay a premium for "graveyard" work hours. 10% is pretty standard so that might be the salary difference if WM pays a differential.

I strongly disagree with drinking before an interview, as American employers do screen for alcohol and marijuana usage, and it's one of the few things that are taken seriously. Many figure if you can't show up clean and sober for an interview, how are you going to be when it comes time to show up for your actual job?

But as for getting nervous, just remember one thing: They need you far more than you need them. If you come in with a great attitude, and realize that you do have something to offer them, then everything else will fall into place naturally.

I've never interviewed for work at WalMart so the only advice I can give you is:

Do Not dress like the people who shop there!

I used to see people standing in line for job interviews at the casino where I worked.

There were a lot of jobs - sort of like Walmart. We had 4 restaurants, a huge theater, food services, 600 hotel rooms, and on and on.

I admit to being shocked at what some people wore to a "job interview".I don't agree you need a suit and tie for a stock person interview - but slacks and a sports shirt would do.

We had people who showed up with hair looking like they just came off a bender, with the tightest and most revealing clothes, with torn tshirts and grungy jeans cutoffs.

You could look at that line of people and predict who would be hired from how they looked, the wad of gum in their mouth, etc. Don't be one of those.

Answer questions in full sentences rather than "yeah" and "nope" and LOOK interested in getting a job. Don't volunteer useless information or talk too much. Do not drink or use drugs before the interview - it's the first thing they notice.

If you get the job, do the job well. In spite of all the negatives people say about WM - they promote from within . Good luck.

Oddly enough, it's not what you think. The positions are to whip up filling for their daily demand for doughnuts. For the owner.

              >>

I did work at Wal-Mart, and I do shop there, so you can dress like me.

Seriously, I did work there. I interviewed twice - for the first time, and a couple of years later at the same store for a re-hire. Even thought the personnel was different each time, it was a basic interview. No
silly questions such as "How would you move Mt. Fuji?". All directly job related and pretty basic questions. I'm fairly certain there won't be anything really different because I'm sure the hiring people have to follow the company guidelines.

They will probably ask about your health as it relates to the job of stocking - lifting and moving boxes and pushing carts, etc.

They might ask about any past dealings with customers, such as give an example of how you handled a stressful customer situation...

I'm pretty sure they asked for examples of how you would deal with a co-worker that you caught stealing (answer report to management), how you would deal with a co-worker who is always late
(report to management, they will know anyway because of timecard systems), or does not do their share of the work (maybe give co-worker a chance to do better, then report to immediate supervisor if it continues to be something intolerable...) Catch all thing to say is that you will follow their procedures...

I'd dress a little above the occasion. Tie (I don't think I wore one, actually), Business shirt, slacks/Khakis. Dress shoes.

Be polite. Yes instead of yeah...

As with most jobs, stress how you are a team player and show that you have a positive attitude.

They do drug and alcohol testing as part of the hiring process. So you have to go to a clinic they designate that will take a urine and hair sample. Maybe blood sample, but I don't really recall that happening. I'd not drink before any interview.

Worked there around 6 years go. In all honesty, there is nothing that you really need to prepare for. They actually had myself and about 4-5 other people who were being hired all play some walmart board game together at a table. It wasn't anything to be worried about at all. It's a typical interview and very low pressure. They will take you into the managment office area or HR, not sure which it was really since I never went in there again. It's basically just sitting at a table and answering some very simple questions. I did get sent for a drug/alcahol test afterward (Dont hold me to that because it may have been the next day or the day they called and hired me).

Their process can take time. You do get hired - pending background check and the drug test results.
About a month when I almost went back as a re-hire. They rechecked everything. I found another job in the meanwhile.

    >>>>>>>

Yes, a lot of USA companies do a credit check as part of the hiring process. If you're going to be handling a lot of cash, I guess they think you might steal to pay of debts. I suppose they might also
use it to see a pattern of behavior that might impact them negatively.

          Good attitude, and congratulations.

Even though it's a simple job, do it well because it's actually more than your first job. It's a stepping stone to your next job. If you can't be trusted to do a simple job well, you'll have a hard time convincing someone to trust you with a more important job later on.

A lot of Wal-Mart store managers and assistant store managers started at the entry level.
One General Manager (GM) I had started pushing shopping carts in the parking lot while in
high school, and made GM in his early thirties. Around 2008, I think GMs were making around
$100,000 per year and Assistant Store managers were making around $65,000 per year.

Mine was $3.05 - the minimum wage then. I think that was around 1980 or 81. That was in a pizzeria. Free food

I also spent a summer working for my dad - as a roofer. Residential. And me with a fear of heights...I hated that summer, but he paid me VERY well. I also discovered how much I REALLY didn't want to be a roofer.

Yep, my first job was also a restaurant. I've had my share of free food.

I've also worked as a roofer in the 1980s for a total of 1 week in the winter shoveling snow off the roof so we could install new shingles. The boss kept telling us to not drop any old roofing nails in the yard (lol, good luck with that (snow + small nails)).

My first job was as a box boy. In a way, I was the DAY stocker. I was the one that rotated, cleaned, and presented the stock and helped customers with manual labor, if needed. I was always OK with the cold, so I didn't mind the freezer much.

            YEAH, THANK YOU(sarc) INFLATION!

Still, $10/hour NOW is probably more workable as a "living wage" than $3 was back then. $10/hour is over $20,000 a year.

BTW I know I was just making minimum wage in 1980.
