Why Are People Immume To Their Own Body Odor?

How is it that stinky people don't even realize that they stink horribly? How can they stand to be with that smell for hours or even all day and not be nauseated by their stinky selves?

Olfactory fatigue. The same reason why, when dropping a deuce, it doesn't smell as bad to you as it does your husband when he walks in after you.

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

Well, that must be why I'm not aware of olfactory fatigue. That Never happens at my house. It's the other way around, lol!

So are you saying that their olfactory system gets tired of the nasty odor and just shuts down?
Well, what would happen then if someone stunk to high heaven and then their home got a gas leak?

            The term, 'kaboom' is omnidirectional.

The olfactory system gets fatigued by particular odors. You may have a vase full of roses on your desk. They smell wonderful for the first few minutes, then you realize you no longer notice the aroma. You go off for lunch, come back, huh, there's the smell of roses again.

This isn't to say the olfactory system can't go on full shut down, but that exceeds the question at hand (or at nose?).

Ooooh! That happens with my Christmas tree every year so I buy the evergreen smelly candles.

And why did you take the "k" off my stunk when you quoted me?

As for lies, you're wrong. Mine are every morning when hubby's at work and his are every afternoon when he gets home from work.

Still not buying it. You've been married 40 years. Hubby's walked in and been gobsmacked at least a few times. It happens. Nothing to be ashamed.

              40 years? I didn't get married when I was 13!!!

Well, we can't ask them to smell up the toilets, by washing and then going berserk with the blue brand vinegar?

But going to the toilets and slapping on something would be a better suggestion.

Best solution is having a "you stink, your out" logo on all the doors.

As long as they don't put "no red meat" on the doors, that would get me worried!

Toilets in shopping centres are bad enough with the dead quiet atmosphere and jet engines in reverse hand dryers!

Yes, pre world war 2 clothing, and the strong smell of mothballs isn't a good start.

But thanks to our leaders screwing the pensioners with ever increasing utility bills, this is the least of their worries.

Yes, occasionally l run into a few men, that stink to high heaven and need a metre or two clearance, just so people don't get a whiff!

It happens occasionally at shopping centures usually during hot weather, and l feel for women since there since of smell is better than mens.

Usually these individuals are poor and save money by offending others and not buying underarm deodorant!

And some don't realise that they stink?

In Au the best brand is Gilette, but there brand has closed up shop in AU, apart from aftershave, bodywash, etc.

I have to order half a dozen from Amazon in the US, just so l can continue to use my favourite brand.

But true, these individuals need a good slap and for someone to say you stink!

If they are riding a bike on a hot day, at least they could throw some vinegar under their arms, (cheap alternative).

I've always believed your own BO is not as offensive to you as BO of someone else. Sort of like perfume smells different on you than on others....

And then... some people either have a bad sense of smell - or don't care what they smell like.

Terra - I used to wonder that one, too. After my mother went into a care facility I realized I was totally ignorant on the subject.

Most of the people in the assisted living home have incontinence problems and a nurse there told me most of them did not use any of the products to prevent/manage this problem until they moved into the care facility.

My mother was one of them and we didn't know she had a urinary problem because she bathed so frequently there was no odor. She knew there was a problem BUT didn't know there were products to manage it. The people in that facility are from a time when you didn't discuss "personal" matters like that.

For a few decades, I sold vacuums in people's homes. Old people have an odor. Some homes are very musty. A few smelled like pee. And having 6 dogs and 8 cats doesn't help.

              These people were completely unaware.

In our home, we have an air purifier that kills organic odors. Because we are getting to the age where "old people smell" may exist in our home, and we would never know it.

weird fact: just before I quit smoking (cold turkey 8 years ago) I started to smell myself - It made me feel ill and ashamed all at once. It was like something in me was telling me it's time to quit -
now I am extremely sensitive to the smell of nicotine/cigarette tobacco -
in fact once I quit smoking my sense of smell has become quite intense and that isn't necessarily a good thing - because smelling other people is not always pleasant as we all know.

            First of all, Congratulations!

Secondly, isn't it funny when it's time for a change in our lives, we become aware of things that we seem to have missed before?

I don't think that is weird at all. Life's kind of cool like that.

I'm exactly the same way, Karen. I quit smoking in 2006 and ever since I've been hyper sensitive to certain smells. Body odor, cologne, perfume and cigarette smoke especially.

You get used to any odor if you spend enough time smelling it. For the same reason you don't feel your clothes being on you.
