Ok so a year ago i got into lifting heavy weights. I was always a fitness nut but i went from "working out" to lifting heavy stuff. I just love the feats of those old time strong men.

So my weight is 75kg +/- 1 kg.

In 12 months this is what i have got to Max 1 rep.

deadlifts; 170kg goal is 200kg
Squat: 130kg goal 140kg
military press: 62.5kg goal 75kg+
weighted pull ups: 30kg goal 40kg+
bent press: 30kg ?? (just learning this one)

I don't bother with bench presses.

Ok i have a feeling this is going to be your typical "I can lift 500kg+" with my eyes closed but here goes.

Anyone else into lifting heavy?

I enjoy the old time strength athletes too.

For your weight, you're certainly strong...stronger than I ever was.

When I as about 25 years old, and training very hard in Kung Fu, we did a demonstration at a gym. After the demonstration, the manager took a few of us over to a barball with 300 pounds on it (maybe 305). I got it to my knees, barely. One of my fellow demonstrators, got it to his upper thigh.. No, we didn't lift weights as part of our training, and had no technique at all.

The gym manager, did 3 or 4 strict behind the neck presses with it. and slowly set it down.
If I didn't see it, I wouldn't have believed it.

He came to our studio to join us in our class (admittedly, an instructor's class). Half an hour into it, his legs gave out.

Our instructor used it as a way to show our superior training. But he was wrong. If you train with very heavy weights, close to your limit, you get immensely strong. If you stand in low stances for extended periods, your legs get powerful, and fast. Different training, different results.

    Your lifts are certainly impressive.

    Those are pretty good lifts.
Keep eating more and more, since you just wanna lift, doesn't matter what crap you eat.

I once trained in a boxing gym on the west coast. The owner of the gym owned a vinyard in Napa and used much of his fortune to travel the globe to find the next HW world champion. He had a very different way of training that didn't pan and and damaged the career of some prospects. It was mostly heavy weight lifting, along with boxing training and short interval sprints. Lots of dietary restrictions and supplements.

I'm 6'5" and at the time I weighed about 250 pounds, which is quite slender for me. Now I feel my best around 275. At any rate, after a stint there I could squat over 600 pounds going all the way to the floor, deadlift around 525 and bench in the mid 300s. Not huge numbers for a big person, but I was proud because I had never been one to lift. I was more of a runner which destroys your strength. In the past, I was always the big guy that could leave every other fighter in the gym while doing daily 5k runs. My PR was 16:48 which I'm more proud of that the weight lifting figures. I learned quickly that powerlifting and fighting do not mix. Others can disagree, but it was terrible for me personally.

I would love to try strongman, but my recovery has become so bad that I just can't recover.

I never had much upper body strength - but now that I'm 60, I find I can handle rocks in the field that are 4 times the weight I could ever get into the rig before. I just act as a guide for strong younger guys and when I find a boulder that's too big, I just point and say "I want that one".

Okay I guess the Men are letting loose with their egos now, huh

      Okay I'll bite LOL

When I was Powerlifting in the 90s at around 6 ft. 210 lbs...
      DeadLift- 2 reps 425lbs
      Squat- 1 rep 365lbs
Bench was really sad- 2 reps for 225lbs

I always loved the dead lift. One of the best strength movements of all time.

Also, did Clean and Jerks 230lbs 2 reps

The king of all lifts to gauge total strength is the Backlift, hands down

I also was runner my whole life until recently ( arthritis).

      3 miles - 15:51
      1 mile- 4:33
      2 mile:10:12
      800 meter: 2:03
      10K 36:03
All in HS. at about 165 lbs

HA! I lifted for a couple of years, maybe 30 years ago. Like you, 6 foot, about 220 lbs. (Way back then)

My maximum lift was a benchpress of 225, for 2 reps. So, you calling that really bad, I find personally insulting.

Can you lift a gallon of milk over your head, without cheating? Neither can I.

By the way, all your other lifts are about double mine. Jerk.

Yeah I guess the 225 is better than the regular Joe ( no pun intended ) on the street.

But I remember though back in Summer of 87', 88', and 89' my brother and I belonged to one of those real 'sweat hog' gyms. Think dark dungeon where you had these "muscle heads" benching 450+

Those guys lived in the gym. Not really high IQs though

But they embarrassed my brother and I

I would like to say that even though I may not be able to spell Neanderthal, I am most certainly not one.

So, I would ask that we dispel the notion that individuals of intelligence can't possibly be strong and that the strong are a couple of cookies short of a dozen.

          Hi,

Great lifts for your size, congrats!

I'm 51 years old now so I don't lift like I used to, that's for sure.

I'm 5 foot 6 1/2 and weigh 225 with a body fat of about 12% so I'm not as lean or heavy as I once was either.
My heaviest was 255pds and right at about 8% body fat.

I'm a life long martial artist who eventually founded his own art.

I won't go into the big 3 because without proof you wouldn't believe it. I have a video card with some video footage around here somewhere that my PA (at the time) took.

But here are a couple of wacky lifts just for fun.
One legged Standing calf 1,150 pounds for 8 reps with each leg.
Barbell shrug 675 for 8 reps.
Leg press 1,505 for 8 reps.
Oblique side bends with a 180 pound dumbbell in one hand 8 reps
Single arm wrist curl off a preacher bench with 150 pound dumbbell 8 reps each hand.

My big 3 were all pretty good except my bench. I never could seem to keep my shoulder healthy.

My lifting actually started in an odd way. I grew up on a ranch in Lovell Wyoming. I had no choice but to lift what needed lifting. I was hardcore into Muay Thai kickboxing and Greco Roman wrestling.
Then I discovered the weight room and was in heaven.
          Been lifting ever since.

Competed in a bodybuilding show once, took 3rd. Competed in a power lifting meet once and was leading by a good margin and got disqualified because I was lifting in my red wing boots. No one cared until one judge threw a fit. I didn't have appropriate footwear so I was out.
I don't suppose it had anything to do with the fact that his nephew was competing? Oh well.

        Very impressive, Patrick!

I have just about always lifted but have only really pushed it in the last decade or so, although I'm still not as consistent as I feel I should be. Nevertheless, I know I am stronger now than at anytime in my life. About two months ago I was chest pressing 370.

Thanks, 370 is a good bench, unless you weigh 370 plus that is (joke).
Keep it up, its what you do for life.

It doesn't matter what you lift so long as it's heavy for you.

I appreciate the emotions you put into your reply.
        1. So you agree that it's pointless.
        2. So you do not have an answer.?

You probably didn't realize it, but this was a honest question.
Do you believe in evolution theory? For millions of years we've evolved to walk long distances, run fast from the danger, use our brain to think to survive or simplify our lives. Ancient people have exploited animals to do the hard work, we use technology. Where did the silly idea of lifting heavy weights come from? Sure, if you believe aliens manipulated primitive apes to create humans that can lift heavy stones and build pyramids, it would make sense. Otherwise? The question still stands, why do some people do these bizarre things to their body? We've evolved to use the brain, so it makes sense to exercise that, and I do understand mastering the art of fighting, which involves creativity, but the brainless activity to build a grotesque body? What's the point?

P.S. But then again, we didn't evolve to smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol either, so I guess a lot of people will do unnatural and abnormal things. Most won't even understand why someone is questioning these activities.

Personally, I prefer not to lift anything heavier than a double bacon cheeseburger and while I will never understand 'body building' especially at a competitive level, I probably would be much better off health wise and would probably have increased my chances of living a wee bit longer had I engaged in weight-lifting and other body-strengthening pursuits throughout my life.

What someone else decides to do to their body is up to them, both the good and the bad. I'm back to only actually caring about that double bacon cheeseburger. When's lunch?

You don't really have to chose between eating hamburgers and lifting weights. I do neither.
If you care about science, then this guy explains that physical exercises combined with SAD have very little effect compared to healthy diet with little or no exercise at all. There goes the health myth.

So no, weight lifting has nothing to do with improving your health, the opposite being true would make much more sense.

Again, to each his own. If you were to be throwing back DBCB, lifting the occasional weight won't hur and will help.

I do care about science, That's precisely why I would never rely on what any one person has to say about anything. It is easy to find info to support your personal point of view. That's virtually meaningless.

No you shouldn't. Of course not. I only mentioned it because I think it's incredibly stupid to use a motto from Nazi concentration camp. I know they didn't came up with the saying, but they did abuse it. It annoys me when someone uses it, esp. 3 times in the same conversation. That's all.
