Could Jake Be The One?

Jake looks real nice but I wouldn't swop my pooch Hades for any other. He's such a cutie.

Oh Terra, he is just so cute and makes you want to just pick him up and give him a hug. He looks young, how old is he?

How soon will you know?

I really wish we could have more than one at a time, but I doubt our pup would be happy about it.

That is exactly how I met Maddy back in 1998, my aussie/lab mix. Except it was in person, not online. I must have looked at a dozen dogs at the shelter that day, but she was the one I connected with.

She stuck around for a great 9 years after that - and there was never any regret.

When I was a courier, I was also dispatcher at night.
We had been making deliveries to the Mountain home
of a company executive.

He called to ask me if the courier might have taken his Jack Russell.
Sadly, the answer was no and they are really not the kind of dog
you leave off leash, outside, in the evening, in the mountains.
No dog is safe like that, but Jack Russels really will take on
an animal like a bob cat, cougar or bear.

Tempting as it was, I did not tell him to his face that he was stupid.
(For leaving his dog out and accusing my courier.)

His ears resemble a Chihuahua's, but seem to be more on top of is head, while Chihuahua's ears are more on the side. There really aren't many breeds with ears that stand up naturally that I can think of...Yorkie is one of them too.


Maybe he just got into a bucket of starch?


Odds are, Jake probably isn't a mix of just two purebreds.

Terra, I got my fingers and toes crossed for you. What a cute fella Jake is - His eyes just make you melt, eh?

I decided to take Suzanne's advice and had my son take me to the pound when he got home from work and OMGosh!

We walked in and the people at the desk explained how it all worked, about the 3 different cards on their cages. One type of card was for those who were ready to be adopted out today. Another for strays that had been picked up or turned in who were healthy had to wait 7 days to see if their owner claimed them before they could be adopted and the third card was for the ones who were being treated by vets until they were healthy enough to adopt out.

We opened the door and walked through. My heart was pounding. Lining the hallway were different doors with letters on them representing size. The large dogs were first. We went through that door and there were cages upon cages with all pitbulls and pitbull mixes with a couple of other big dogs I couldn't identify. Some were lying down looking so sad with bloodshot eyes and didn't even move when we entered or walked by. Others were crying. Just a couple barked.

I started to talk to them and then I lost it. I burst out in tears and couldn't stop them from forming or falling. When I started to cry, one of the dogs who hadn't been crying stated whining, crying with me. Then came the big sobs! I had mascara running down my face and looked a fright!

My son had to escort me back to his car so I could pull it together. Everyone was looking at me and I was so embarrassed! Once in his car, I got a grip on myself and regained control, so we went back in and went through some more doors. These were bigger dogs too, different sorts of hound dog mixes. I managed to just have tears rolling down my cheeks slowly.

When we entered the last door, the first cage held a 3 year old Pomeranian girl. She was so sweet. She was excited and started turning circles in her cage on the upper level. When I stepped closer, she stuck her little head out of the slot where they slip in food and water, I think. Anyway, she licked the tears on my cheek.

I took her card and she was on her 7th day meaning she could be adopted tomorrow/today now. I took the card to the front desk and found out there were 5 "interested parties" but filled out my adoption form anyhow. They told me they work on a first come first served basis. I know I probably won't get her, but it was a start anyway.

Then a gentleman gave me a card with a website on it. He told me they get anywhere between 4 to 12 dogs in per day and I could view them from that website. He said if there was one I liked, to come back down, see it, get the card and hopefully be the first "interested person".

I still want Jake but, as each day passes, I lose just a little hope. I'm trying to prepare myself for the worst, but hope for the best. If Jake falls through, I do have other options.

I swear, I never knew adopting a pet would be so difficult! Hubby is like, "Screw 'em! We'll go to the fair and buy you a puppy there. No wonder people get puppies from puppy mills. They've gone overboard and have taken it too far and made it too difficult to rescue a poor puppy!"

Don't worry! I will never ever do business with a puppy mill!!

As many here know, Huskies are my favorite breed. My second one looked very, very much like Mishka. My first one did this low in pitch and volume "howl-growl" thing in the mornings after I
woke up. I think she was saying, "Dad, lets get going and I have to pee".

The way they talk is one of the reasons I like them. Also, one of the reasons they need
owners who have done their research on the breed. Some howl a lot when left alone and
often the neighbors don't care for that.
