Unlike most people, I need to gain weight.

What shall I eat that will make me put on some weight?

I will definitely keep away from McDonalds, TV dinners and other junk food. Also I do not eat meat.

Anything you recommend? There is ice cream and pastries of course but not only that.

I am talking more about healthy foods.

Thanks a lot in advance for your answers.

    Healthy fats.

Natural peanut butter. Flaxseed, sesame seed, and olive oils. Avocados.

I'm sure others will have more ideas.

    All the best,
    Michael

Nuts, yes - but if you are eating peanut butter (soy, too) make sure to supplement your iodine as peanuts and soy will block it and your thyroid needs it. Don't count on salt for it- it's not a reliable source.

What keeps vegetarians thin is the lack of many amino acids that animal food sources provide. You need proteins so need to supplement with as many diverse foods that will replace as many of the amino acids your diet won't provide. Plus some carby stuff, too.

Baked potatoes with sour cream and cheese are awesome. Mexican food, too - the beans will supplement your protein needs that you are cutting short not eating meat.
Buckwheat anything - lot of protein supplement and carbs.
Yams, too - real good with a bit of real maple syrup on them.
    Bananas.
Eggs - egg yolk is about the best source of amino acids going.
Cheese is good but hard to digest so you will need to supplement with beans which are the most easily digestible proteins.
    Multi-grain breads, etc.

Eggplant - eggplant parmesan is incredible.
Lettuce isn't high calorie but it will replace a few amino acids that turkey provides (turkey, if you eat poultry and fish, has the most amino acids of any animal product outside of eggs).
Oatmeal - also extreme in nutrition.
Seeds and nuts of any type (also for protein replacement).

Have a glass of wine, beer, or Mikes hard lemonade, etc. once in awhile - it will prohibit fat
    burning a bit for ya.

Have you tried protein supplements? I'd suggest either whey or casein protein - if you are a guy stay away from soy based protein powders.

Soy isn't all that great for women either outside of deterring some rabidity from menopause. It's in a LOT of processed foods and doesn't always go under the name "soy". Hydrogenated anything on a food label usually has soy in it - even tuna fish. There are hydrogenated oils that don't contain soy - but they aren't anything you want to munch on either usually.

Thank you all for your answers. A fattening diet! This is really nice!

I am going to have to start with some of that stuff.

        Avocados! Yummy!!
Potatos with sour cream and cheese! Yummy!!

I was thinking one thing. What if I eat spaghetti with good tomato sauce and butter and grated Swiss cheese?
        Yummy!!

I am thinking of real food. No supplements, tablets or powders of sorts.

As Teddy recommended you can always use protein supplements, they seem to work nicely. When I was much younger and had weight issues my doctor had me to start eating two avocados per day. I liked them many ways however my favorite was to add just a bit of taco sauce and blend well then spread the mixture onto flour tortillas. I also liked to have them with a bit of mayonnaise, salt, pepper and lemon juice then mix them into lettuce, onion and tomatoes which made a nice healthy salad.

Wow - spaghetti, HO YEAH. And veggitarian Lasagnia, and Vegetarian Mousaka.
Yep, those won't hurt your attempts either. Now you made me hungry.
Time for a spinach pita bread veggie sandwich with ranch dressing and feta cheese.
Holy crap - just keep this thread going and I think we'll ALL gain a few pounds!

Wow thank you for that advice, I was not aware of the link between hydrogenated and soy.

Cripes Teddy, ya just made me feel guilty for not going into more detail.

Wanna stay away from soy? LOL

    Look for labels that say:
Soybean oil, soy protein, soy protein isolate, soy flour, Miso, Carob, Tofu, Vegetable broth, vegetable gum, Bulking agent, Lecithin, Emulsifier, Guar gum,Gum, Arabic, Hydrolyzed vegetable protein/plant protein,Monosodium glutamate (MSG), Seasoned salt, Shortening, Vegetable gum/starch/oil/protein, Thickener, Stabilizer, Protein extender

    and it's in:
Ethnic foods: Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, Indian, Baby food and cereals, Canned fish, such as tuna
Protein bars, energy bars, Salad dressings, Soup mixes, Baked goods, Multi-grain breakfast cereals,
Sauces: Asian, gravy, soy, Worcestershire, barbecue. Cooking oils
Margarine, Mayonnaise, Frozen dinners, Vegetable broth
    Etc.
