MacBook Pro or G4 notebook

Just a question, I'm kind of new to the Mac. I bought a G5 a few months ago the Iowa State University Surplus and have loved it. Pretty much in the process of getting off PC and going to mac. Anyway, for my laptop though I'm still using my Gateway, but I'd like to switch everything over to the Mac.

Here is my question: At the ISU Surplus I can pick up a 17 inch G4 notebook, 1.5GHZ processor, 80GB HD with 1.5GB of ram for about $400 to $500. I see online that the same thing would probably cost me about $800 to $1000 normally. I wonder if I go ahead and by this, or just go ahead and spend the $2500 to get the new MacBook Pro? Or will the G4 be good enough for my needs?

As a side note, if anyone would be interested in getting G4 Desktops and Notebooks, or G5 Desktops for around $400 to $600, let me know and I can get you one every other Weds since my sister works for the University she has access to the deeply discounted prices.

I don't know what your needs are Brandon, but my first Mac was an eMac with a 1GHz G4 CPU and 640MB of memory, and that pretty much handled any "everyday" task that I threw at it. It struggled a little when running more demanding apps like GarageBand or iMovie, but for everything else it was just fine.

Now your prospective G4 notebook has another 50% of processing power and almost 3 times the memory of my old eMac, so unless you're planning to edit some lengthy, hi-res video or lay down a 16-track music score, I think that the G4 notebook may just be perfect for you.

If you want to know as much as possible about the notebook before you buy it, be sure to go to Low End Mac: The Mac Experience and click on the "Profiles" link at the top of the home page. Then you can find everything you might want to know about the particular model that you're interested in.

    Hope this helps!
